I completely forgot Ade Edmondson was in this episode! RIP Rik Mayall. A comedy force of nature.

Matthew Hanlon

The baron is played by Ade Edmondson who was Rik Mayall’s (Flasheart) comedy partner since the ‘70s (the dangerous brothers, the young ones, botttom).

Paul Flux

"Back home for tea and medals!" is a favourite saying of my mountain biking club.

I wondered how you’d feel about this one…it’s certainly the most 1980s toilet humoured of them all….theres a lot of teenage boy energy about it all. Rik Mayall is certainly a force of nature and is pretty full on in this episode. Good to see his long term comedy partner Ade Edmonson make an appearance as well. They’re a legendary comedy duo, from The Young Ones through to Bottom, always good fun,

Lovely reaction. Mayall's Flashheart is always pitched twelve octaves above the rest of the cast, but somehow it always works. Just in case you're a First World War Aviation geek like me . . . the aerial footage in this episode is cutting room floor stuff from the 1970s Malcolm McDowall war movie "Aces High". It's a very overlooked movie and worth a watch. Pilot's life expectancy was never as poor as 20 minutes, but at various phases of the war it was pretty short. During April 1917 (often known as "Bloody April") when the Germans established a period of technological supremacy over the British and French air forces it was down to literally a few days (and only a few hours operational flying). The pendulum swung back and forth as both sides tried to out-design, perform, arm and produce each other in terms of aircraft throughout the war. It's crazy to think that when the First World War started the aircraft was just over 10 years old and the technology was in its utter infancy. By 1918 both sides were fielding dedicated scouting, recon, fighter and bomber aircraft armed with multiple machine guns and capable of (for the time) fantastic speeds. Just 5 years from machines that could barely sustain themselves in the air, to aircraft literally capable of flying across countries to bomb enemy cities. Manfred Von Richthofen (gloriously played by Ade Edmondson in this episode) was the War's leading ace, with 80 confirmed aerial victories before his death (not at the hands of Lord Flashheart, he was hit and mortally wounded by ground fire, who actually hit him is still much disputed). He wasn't actually that impressive a pilot, fundamentally capable but not spectacular (unlike men like Voss, Ball, Luke and Guynemer). He was however an excellent tactician and a superb shot. He made a science of this new type of warfare and many of the maxims he perfected are still taught to combat pilots to this day, they are fundamentally sound tactically.

I don't think we've actually heard Paula go, "oh fucking hell", quite like like this before 🫢 and of course it was Rik Mayall who did it. Nice to Ade here too, forgot he was in this, btw his & Riks long running tv & stage show Bottom is way, waaay worse then this. I also like how they do shine a light on just how narcissistic Flashheart is when Edmond gets to him by telling him all the men hate him, his face for just a moment is kind of distraught before punching him.

Hell3Quin

Wasn't the first instance of actual air to air fighting just one pilot throwing a brick at another?

Dryfesands

Sadly there's no evidence of brick chucking, but there certainly is of aircrew taking revolvers, shotguns, rifles and other small arms up with them before aircraft were powerful enough to accommodate the weight of a machine gun safely. Grenades were used too, and one French pilot actually tried a grappling hook and cable. Which is mental. There were certainly aerial casualties due to these early duels. The first air to air victory was in October 1914 when a French aircrew managed to kill a German pilot with rifle fire (more by luck than judgement it is to be assumed, hitting a moving target from a moving vehicle is incredibly difficult with a single shot weapon, despite what the movies would have us believe). The big breakthroughs came in 1915 when people began to work out ways to get a machine gun to fire through a propellor safely without destroying it (first with deflector plates and then later with synchronization gear). At that point the dedicated fighter was really born as pilots could now aim their weaponry directly by simply pointing the aircraft.

Don't forget The Dangerous Brothers.

To put this into context: Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson (Lord Flashheart and the Baron) were figureheads of the alternate comedy scene of this era. While Blackadder is very much the product of comedians from (mostly) establishment prestigious elite university almuni, and their comedy was about wit and characters and savage dialogue, the other scene was something else entirely. Rik and Ade and their colleagues - from much more working class backgrounds - led chaotic and experimental comedies, marrying surreal violence, massively over-the-top characterisation and bizzare scenarios. Their shows - The Young Ones, Bottom and others - were the polar opposite of the cerebral snark of Blackadder. The audience knew this, and knew exactly who Rik Mayall was the moment he appeared on screen. The comedy on a meta level, is the crazed alternative comedian unleashing hell on the establishment comedy. As a fun counter to this, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Tony Robinson and Emma Thompson guest starred in an episode of the Young Ones, playing massively exaggerated versions of their posh personas, surrounded by the violence and working class grime of the rest of the show. These crossovers worked with UK audences on a meta level. A sort of "they don't belong in this show" but the fun is watching it play out. This might be the most cartoon episode of Blackadder, and it wouldn't work every week, but I think it did work in this example.

Winterkin

The late great Rik Mayall made his career in the 80s with these ultra-high energy characters. I always loved the episode, though I was never a huge fan of that final line "what a poof" to an actually-gay Red Baron. I wouldn't have minded if it was just to show Flashheart as a bit of prick, but it was just at the moment he was coming off as the hero of the episode - rescuing them all and then headbutting Cpt Darling. Rik Mayall's relentless energy, especially in the classroom scene, makes it all worth it though. And you can even see Hugh Laurie trying hard not to crack up on camera.

SnabbKassa

I'm not giving anything away to say that next week's episode has a spy mystery. Kat and Paula, whodunnit?

SnabbKassa

"Not when they ought to be on my face" is used a lot more in my group of friends.

Sebastian Bodine

So much happens when Lord Flashheart shows up that a nearly 30 minute episode flies past in what feels like 10 minutes.

Jonathan

His reaction going from upset, to laughing like he's in on the joke, to reconsidering and punching Blackadder within the space of a few seconds is glorious.

Ashtara Levin

For me, this is my least favorite episode of this season, because Flasheart's type of humor is not really my thing, even though the actor is doing great job, I get more cringe than laughter from his jokes

Ashtara Levin

thank you Dryfesands, that was fascinating!

Dryfesands

I'm glad someone is as geeky as me :-D

If you aren't familiar with Rik Mayall's work. This might give the impression that his type of role is always the macho successful sex fiend winner. In truth his most mainstream roles were amoral creepy politician (The New Stateman), useless unpopular idiot student supposed anarchist (The Young Ones) and most famously, the ultimate loser in all of British TV, even more pathetic than Rimmer at his lowest points (Bottom). He is hilarious in all. But thus characterisation in Blackadder is oddly, an outlier.
