As a heads up, we had some slight mic/audio issues this episode and there are small moments where our audio cuts out during some conversation spots. Unfortunately not much we could do to fix it after, so thank you for your understanding!

Compared to Vox Machina you can tell the cast put more work into their backstories. :) Never seen Capmaign 2 but this was a great start, the longer runtime helps a lot. They actually dropped the first three "intro" episodes on the same day (with EP 1 being briefly free on YouTube before the premiere), that also helped getting people hooked.

Vox Machina has tragic backstories and lots of dick jokes. Mighty Nein has traumatic backstories and no dick jokes (so far).

Kat, if there's one thing this series doesn't have so far, it's chill. Even this very first episode taps the feels accelerator and so far not a single episode hasn't found a way to do that (at least for me). As much fun as Vox Machina was/is, this is somehow way more engaging, which I feel is part and parcel to meeting the group before they're actually assembled together. This is why I enjoy both Campaign 2 and 3 more than 1 (or indeed 4 so far) - The Mighty Nein allows you to become invested in the characters before they become a "team" and I think that makes a big difference. A good non-D&D example of this I think is Farscape, where we get an audience surrogate at the beginning and the group is sort of built from disparate characters as the series progresses. This feels very much the same and although I know the broad strokes of the story beats, I still find myself surprised and excited by how the show plays them out. Can't wait for y'all's reaction to the next episode.

I'm not sure, but it SEEMS like the animation is in the same style as Vox Machina, but more...detailed? Maybe some higher frames per second for the action? Not sure, but I agree that I liked this immediately more than Vox Machina and I do like Vox Machina, but I think I liked the darker tone and the complexity of characters. As a reference, I have not watched any of the campaigns and just am going on the animations.

Campaign 2 is my least favorite, but Mighty Nein is so far fixing every problem I had with the campaign. In the campaign, for a long time, I didn't like most of the characters. They were way too abrasive, and there was no party cohesion. They've done a good job of making them individually likable while keeping the rough edges and the inter-party conflict. And the "story" in the campaign is a meandering mess for most of it. They just bounce around from random stuff to random stuff with no real stakes for the world at large. Here, they've tightened up the story, and really shown us what they're up against and the cost of losing. In fact Mighty Nein is shaping up to be my favorite of the animated series. (At least until they get to campaign 3 - that's my favorite campaign by far.)
