The premise for this episode does read a lot like a Red Dwarf episode; you can imagine Arnie J clumsily picking up a sword to be the reluctant hero (hey, we've seen it) to save the crew. But the Doctor isn't a snivelling coward by nature and his journey is just beginning. Robert Picardo absolutely owns the role, just another example of the unsung heroes of Berman Trek's casting department nailing their job.

Freyr starts telling the Doctor about her deeds and he just says, "skep" IYKYK

Robert Picarfo is the GOAT

Hwæt þā forloren seolforas on þǣm steorra sæ Fyndon unhālig Heorot besēged mid Grendel. Sorry, couldn't resist giving this reaction the full Old English treatment! As anyone who's ever grappled with Beowulf knows, the "please let this be useful to me at some point somehow" impulse never dies. Fair play to the writer for milking an entire Trek episode out of it!

Kinda surprised the Pals didn't pick up on the "D&D" allusion in the title when they were guessing which genre of holodeck adventure we'd be getting. (seems pretty clear Chakotay thinks D&D is for nerds) And years before "touching grass" was a thing, we have the Doctor "touching tree."

I wonder if it was written to be, then health & safety were like "yeah no, we can't have highly poisonous mushrooms on set"

Locoturbo

Still not a big fan of this one, since I'm not big on holodeck-heavy plots, and the other plot isn't very interesting either. But I do like the doctor and also Freya's actor did a great job.

Star Trek trope - "They studio let them raid the costume shop." Check! Star Trek trope - "The holodeck malfunctioned." Check! I love that the holodeck means that LARPing is a customary form of recreation in the Federation.

I thiiiiink I remember Marjorie from an episode of Quantum Leap where she played a fashion model?

DavrosXV

I couldn't catch what Kat said just after 49:50 - which episode were you talking about that was dumb?

With regards to DS9 and VOY, I have come to understand that these are very different but complementary shows. They are both TNG spinoffs. If TNG was a parent, DS9 and VOY are like brother and sister. If you liked the darker themes, the political intrigue, and the story arcs of TNG and want to get deeper into that, you can watch DS9. If you liked the more adventurous, exploratory, and strange new worlds type episodes you can watch VOY. You loved TNG but want to see something new that challenges your expectations and flips the formula watch DS9. If you loved TNG and want more of the same then watch VOY. Of course DS9 also has some episodic standalone adventures and VOY has some minor story and character arcs. But you can also just jump in casually and watch any episode. It is harder to do that with DS9. You really have to pay attention. Sorry for the long post, just something I’ve wanted to say! I know in the past there was a split between these fanbases because they were running in tandem but they are really like siblings.

I know her from Babylon 5! Leader of the Mars Resistance.

Not going to lie. This made me laugh outloud.

Lizbeth Marcs

He really is. They hit the jackpot when they added him to the cast. I've seen him in other things and he always adds that something. His guest role on "Justified" is *chef's kiss*.

Hell3Quin

Voyager also benefited of starting at 3rd season DS9 so the show runners have a better idea on what worked.

Hell3Quin

I remember that Justified episode, when Raylan finally takes him up on seeing his art collection 🤌

WastedPo

Yeah, I think they never completed the thought: "I just didn't like the last..." And then they both talked about the episode without naming it.

tal goren

probably was the episode with the B-plot of Tom making a holo-pub for the crew.
