I could be wrong, but I believe that one of the reasons for the change from Silver to Ruby for the original film was the use of Technicolor and the whole transition from black&white to color they were doing in it, so the red sparkly shoes would "pop" more off the screen than silver.

"Return to Oz" did make reference to the Ruby Slippers. Given how different the story felt to the original film, I wouldn't be surprised if there were things that were held back for copyright, but the Ruby Slippers wasn't one of them. This episode is SO difficult to watch, even in comparison to the previous episodes. I don't know if it's the hamfisted way it tried to address prejudice or what, but it's definitely my least liked episode of the series. Really looking forward to the final episode of the series, though. CANNOT. WAIT.

Also, as I don't think either of the Pal's may have made the connection, and there was a comment by Kat about the one-finger typing. I'm pretty sure that intro opening section is a riff off the company outro that was done for tv shows that were created by Steven J Cannell who was also an author. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qweoMJS1DQ8 who was responsible for shows such as The Rockford Files, The A-Team, The Greatest American Hero, and 21 Jump Street among many others. He made an appearance as himself at the start of the series Castle, in the authors poker game, discussing murder mysteries.

Somehow this episode is still less racist against Celtic people than that episode of TNG. If you enjoy being greeted as traveler, the children's show Knightmare has you covered, unless my mind has been confused by the scotchman Limmy, and his Falconhoof Adventure Call sketch.
