Apparently they cast Brian Markinson as Sulan first, then asked if he would play Durst in the previous episode to mess with our heads. He previously played Vorin in Homeward, the dude who offed himself when he found out Worf's brother had relocated his village to the Holodeck to move them to a new planet. It breaks my heart when B'Elanna feels her forehead at the end after talking to the Doctor & Chakotay. She has such a hard time reconciling her Klingon side, but can't survive without it.

Lintrinsic

Is this where Ayala first gets named?

Travis Boyle

Great episode. Yes the actor that plays Durst is the same actor that plays the Viidian scientist. He appeared last episode in a couple scenes. And I forgot about the Talaxian that helps them. They should have rescued him in the episode. Especially what happens and where they go in the next episode.

Christopher Lamont Harris

I hope you both have a HAPPY NEW YEAR 2026 and excellent episode 🥳🎉🎉🎉🎊🎊🎊🎊

Another solid character episode for B’Elanna in the first season. Between this and ‘Parallax’ it seems like the show writers had a good handle on what to do with her character. Of course they had the advantage of being able to adapt some Worf story ideas for B’Elanna. Just as they used Spock as a template for Tuvok and Data as somewhat of a template for Holodoc. The Voyager characters, at least as initially conceived, were quite strong. This episode itself is almost a remake of the TOS episode ‘The Enemy Within’. In both episodes the science is pretty improbable but at least it is used in service of a good character study. Kirk has almost the same conflict in that episode but cool to see it redone decades later.

I remember reading somewhere that the show wanted to keep B'elanna fully human at first. Not sure when/why they changed their minds, but I can guess.

Troy Convers

Easily my favourite S1 episode, with full on body horror (kudos to Brian Markinson for an outstanding double role) and a chance to explore the inner turmoil that Torres has lived with all her life; struggling to come to terms with the inner warrior that dwells within her. It's written and acted really well, with Dawson getting to play 'Bruce Banner' for once. It reads like the TOS episode 'The Enemy Within', just with a different route taken to how they split. The irony in having one actor in two roles with the same face is then reversed: its actually a different actress playing Klingon Torres (Joy Kilpatrick) who played alongside Patrick Stewart in 'Safe House'. And if you've never seen that film, you should. Just think of his behaviour in it as a Picard that went full wacko after the Borg incident. No-one seems to have reacted to it!

Redjac

Joy Kilpatrick was the klingon and the human torres every time Roxann Dawsons face was in the picture. so we saw only Joys back of her head (or blured face).

Troy Convers

Remarkable likeness though IRL.

Mark Ten

Great performance. I just wonder how the story would have turned out if the human B'Elanna had died and the Klingon version had lived?

Troy Convers

A Chief Engineer that keeps having to repair everything she smashes? 🤣

Jack Mingle

The really crazy thing about this episode is that if you think of it, the B'elanna from before Faces is killed and split into two people, one half died, then the human half is reintegrated into her, meaning that from now on, we will only ever see this sort of "second" B'elanna. She is technically not even the same person as the old B'elanna.

StarkRG

Eh, she's the closest continuer. She's got all the memories of the previous version, so it's barely any different from the transporters. If she believes herself to be the same B'elanna, and there's no discernable difference, then she is.

Ben Chan

"Technically" doesn't everyone die every time they use the transporter? I do think it would've been more interesting had the human B'Elanna sacrificed herself to save the Klingon half, dying a warrior's death and winning Klingon B'Elanna's respect, thus motivating her to want her human DNA reintegrated back into herself. (it'd also be less human-centric as though the human B'Elanna is somehow more real)

Mark J

I just want to say Tuvok is probably the funniest character on the show. The cold open with the soup gets me every time

Nolan

No! The transporter does not kill people. It maintains their consciousness as it scans a blueprint pattern of their physical body atom by atom, converts those molecules to energy, then transfers that energy along with the person's consciousness either to another pad that uses the blueprint to convert the transferred energy back into matter, or uses the pattern to covert the energy back at the destination.

Troy Convers

It can't maintain their consciousness as it doesn't have the memory capacity. Remember 'The Nth Degree'?

Locoturbo

Did they change their minds, or just their foreheads

Locoturbo

A rather impatient friend of mine once wanted to skip ahead in Voyager, and I tried a bunch of times to give him a list, paring down seasons starting with S1. But it felt impossible, especially now when I rewatch episodes like this and remember how good it was. The camerawork, story and acting especially from Dawson. If I ever left this off the list it would have been a big mistake.

Carrie Schwent

B' Elanna takes the whole " arguing with yourself " thing to a whole new level!
