The part that I had trouble justifying is the happy ending where Barclay & Salt get to go off together. This story was already tragedy and to me Salt's recognition was that whether Barclay knew it or not, he was the source of the infection, and I expected her to reject him in the end and swim off alone. She accepts her punishment for bringing destruction on her people was to swim alone. I was also expecting Barclay to be assassinated as part of the cover up (I thought that scene where UNIT turns around and lets Barclay face the mob was a set up to kill him). The ending I saw was Kate alone on the beach. The camera pans to the water and then you hear a gunshot. For a moment you assume the Kate has killed herself. The camera pans back, there is a water bottle on the edge of the shore, then you see her standing over the dead body of the jogger, crying & yelling at him to pick up the bottle. Just yelling at the body. Kate is broken. Her losses, lack of sleep and drugs. Great watch along, Pals. Thanks!

While this was very well acted and directed, and mostly well written, I just haven't been able to fully suspend my disbelief. It's a serious political drama based around a silly pulp sci-fi premise. The homo aqua / sea devils were a throw away villain of the week in a 3rd Doctor story that was mostly an excuse for John Pertwee to face off against Roger Delgado. I just can't take the "threat" from such a nonsensical enemy seriously enough for such drama.

I also found the romantic "happy ever after" ending somewhat jarring against the main gloomy feel of the rest of the show. But I agree with Kat in that it's definitely memorable. Which is a plus point compared with other shows.

As a political drama with an environmental theme, it reminds me a little of the 1985 mini series Edge of Darkness. But Edge of Darkness is definitely the better show. Perhaps another one for the Pals to add to their "miscellaneous British" genre watch list!

I'm surprised you liked it as much, the finale absolutely did not work for me. Of course they are not gonna clear the rivers and oceans, they don't have to, they genocided the one thing that was holding them accountable. The last scene with Kate felt like an over the top "don't pollute our beaches" PSA. It's the corporation and politicians that are responsible for this mess, not a random dude on a beach, and the season started with pointing that out … and nothing happened. And we know nothing fundamentally different can happen because if the Doctor has to keep visiting modern day Earth then the Earth can't be very different from our own. I would love to see humanity dealing with the fact that another sentient species was nearly wiped out but is that gonna happen? And can we talk about the gills? It's a very fairytale ending and I'm sure Barclay likes them but the implication is that the Sea Devils could've caused everyone to grow gills and that's some serious body horror territory.

Once again The Pals help me like a show better than I did the first time I watched it.

I find it ridiculous that they have the technology to give him gills, yet couldn't find a cure for the virus.

My reaction was pretty similar to Paula's: the show kept presenting genocide as some kind of human-specific crime, when homo aqua was planning the same thing. Also, unlike Kat, I don't think homo aqua have a right to be angry about humanity, considering that "legend of the sea devils" showed they were already trying to flood the world centuries before the industrial revolution. They were just as morally bankrupt as humanity.
