This episode is of the category "producer's/Writer's disguised fetish". (also blame Rick Berman)

Paul McBryde

we had the privilege in the uk to see jealous neelix on voyager and jealous kryten in red dwarf, and by privilege i mean hell

Captain Chris Dorn

This looked like a similar story to TNG's "Galaxy's Child" episode from season, just with more detail.

BMAG33

I think the writers started with wanting to introduce the concept of children and that families forming on Voyager, then somewhere in the writing process things went a bit off the rails the more they tried to justify Neelix and Kes' relationship. Or maybe one of the writers just didn't like Kes and wanted her to put goop on her hands

Troy Convers

Yeah, I always skip this one. Easily the worst episode of Voyager. Yep, I rate 'that episode' higher than this. 😂

xeve

I like Kes and Tuvak characters the most. The both convey old kind souls, but Kes has a youthful sense of wonder where Tuvac a calm steadiness about him. They both pursue intelectual growth. But, while te pairing her with Neelix was intended to be a point of conflict, it's been too cringy imo. That said, imo Neelix grows on people with time, can't elaborate for spoiler reasons.

Mark Ten

In navies there are usually strict fraternization rules to keep lower ranking enlisted and officers from being taken advantage of by superior officers. There are usually good morale and chain of command reasons. That was the line Troy & Ricker danced around in TNG.

Ben Chan

But of course those crews weren't stranded in the middle of nowhere with no other options for companionship. That wouldn't be good for morale either after awhile.

Ben Chan

All other questionable writing decisions aside, one of the plotlines/tropes I always hate in shows is "forced pregnancy of a female character." Whether sci-fi or supernatural, it happens all the time. (maybe less often now? Not sure, but I hope so) I'm pretty sure I made this comment on the TNG one with Troi. The fact that Kes is literally underage by her own people's standards for childbirth makes it extra icky.

Lizbeth Marcs

Hahahhahahha. It's amazing how you DO NOT have to mention the name of "that episode" for me to burst out laughing. You might be an army of one on this one, but I salute you for it.

Jack Mingle

I don't understand what you mean with "tries to justify neelix and kes' relationship" though

Ryan

Hopefully they have extra *** filters for the holodeck...

Locoturbo

... a fetish for brine shrimp?

Locoturbo

Yeahhhhh welcome to season 2! Also ... if Ocampa can only conceive once, and she's talking about having 1 child .......... oh Voyager writers you goofballs...

Ryan

Unhealthy portrayal of relationships? On TV from the 90s? Never! /s Fortunately relationships on TV in the last decade are completely wholesome and healthy, right? ...right. ...oh. ...well this episode was fucking weird, even graded on the curve of "it was the 90s". But also Tuvok and the Doctor giving progressive (for the time) advice. At least this wasn't a "well, the actress is pregnant, so..." episode. I can only think of a handful of examples where that is handled well, and too many where it is handled badly. But that's a discussion for another time... ---- There's a channel I follow on Nebula called Sci-Fi and Futurism that covers a whole range of topics, and one common one is how humans will colonize the stars *without* FTL (faster than light) travel. The rocket equation being the harsh mistress that it is, interstellar ark ships would best operate with external engines - like solar sails or pushing lasers. Accelerate at 0.1g all the way out of the solar system and you can get to a small percentage of light speed. But even 0.05c means it's almost well over a century to get to the nearest star. That's an entire human lifetime under current biology. But if you have cryogenics or life extension - or both - it's not as big of an issue. But any children born during the long voyage through the void might not feel the same. How do you raise them to accept the destiny they have been born into? Is that even ethical? If you could send them back to Earth, would they even want to? They'd be a stranger in a strange land. Maybe some settle on the next planet, maybe some stay with the ship (or fleet, after a few centuries) and continue to tend the garden, planting the seeds of humanity across the stars. Voyager is looking at a 75 year trip to get back home, and that's with FTL. The Federation does not seem to have some life extension - Dr. McCoy is 137 in the Star Trek: The Next Generation pilot - but it's not Methuselah levels of negligible senescence. So a child born in the first year be late middle age by the time they get back home. What then? Of course if you want to get truly philosophical you have to ask yourself if it is even ethical to have children, period, never mind in situations as extreme as "on a science vessel on the wrong side of the galaxy". But from a story telling perspective and a TV production perspective ... never work with kids or animals. (/end train of thought)

This was garbage. Worst episode of the series so far. And it is one of the reasons Neelix is my least favorite Trek characters. Dump him into space.

Robert Carson

There have been many a great story told of generational ships and what that would be like. Would they lose the purpose? Would it become religious doctrine? Great story telling device.

Troy Convers

"If The Stars Should Appear..."

Troy Convers

You see, THAT episode had a fantastic premise if it had been a B-Plot that had been bought to the boil over several episodes and had lasting consequences. But it didn't. 😑

Travis Boyle

Not the best episode but totally agree there are some great character moments. Really love Janeway and Chakotay's chemistry

Data Cable

TNG"The Loss," but with fertility instead of empathic blindness.

Reece Hart

When people say they dislike Neelix episodes like this are largely the reason for it. I just want to throw him off the ship this episode
