Thaaaats not quite what a chav is. Was The Bill cancelled by now? Oh wait, it was notorious for being the show every working actor or hopeful actor, extra etc would be on bc of its voracious need beyond the main cast. Thats why they had her be spotted as on the bill. Clever.

My take on Malcom is he's one of those people who is actually good at his job in a nasty, ruthless way, but everyone around him is so completely incompetent he can't really save them from themselves. You get the feeling he may have had political principles once but they've been so eroded that now he just resents everyone else around him in politics and journalism for being either brainless, spineless or self-interested.

This came out in 2005 and The Bill was running until 2010

IDK if anybody has said, but when you're done with this you have to watch In The Loop - it's basically the same cast plus a bunch of US actors in a similar sort of setting, but much grander scale. Also chavs are what nearly killed Burberry - it's not just any young person, it's a smidge classist but mostly behaviour related.

As a reference check: “The only gay in the village” refers to the character of Daffydd in Little Britain, at the time, one of the greater catchphrase and meme generating series in the UK. Eddie Grundy as an answer instead refers to a character from the *radio* drama The Archers, which alone is a sign of how out-of-date Hugh's cultural awareness is, but the Grundys in particular harken back to the 1970s and '80s (when Hugh was probably in his late 20s/early 30s). “Chav” refers to what is essentially the hood ganster equivalent in the British class system — not in terms of appearance or even behaviour, but in terms of social standing. It's a stereotype of a working-class derived group of outcast violent youth, commonly dressed in sportswear and drunk or drugged out of their tiny minds, obsessed with bling and specific (counterfeit) brands, notably Burberry, and using crime as their primary means of being able to afford those markers. The term is closely related to “ASBO” — anti-social behaviour order — which was a bit of legislation introduced at the tail end of the '90s to give the authorities the means to go after people who were a general nuisance but where each single offence was too minor to really offer any structured legal means of redress. Oh, and Simon Hewitt is a character that is often mentioned but never actually appears — it's basically Malcolm's off-screen nemesis within the journalist corps, characterised as someone who habitually goes after whatever ministers and messages Malcolm tries to spin or manage. It gets a bit muddled sometimes since the series quite often also references real people within media or the government.

Brilliant! Although The Expanse is the show I most would love you to watch as I think it’s made for you both I’d highly recommend No Offence. Jo Scanlan (Terri) is one of the three leads, but plays a very different character - but an utterly brilliant one. It’s a darkly humorous drama about police detectives in Manchester and it’s so good. Also while I think of it I’d add these to the recommended list: Inside No 9, Robin of Sherwood and Spaced

In these early years, it's so nice to see Malcolm being built up like the T-Rex in Jurassic Park, and, just like that series, you eventually go, "Well, he's not even the worst of the monsters, or, in this case, assholes. He's just the biggest one."
