I've watched this episode a few times over the years and my opinion on it has been unwavering. It's pants. Absolute pants.

Troy Convers

I absolutely love this episode! Yes it's reminiscent of 'The Nth Degree', but having a 'problem of the week' that couldn't be solved and hoping for the best is something we don't see a lot of in Trek. And as for the bickering and tetchyness, well they're stuck far from home on limited resources, having them all get along all the time is a bit boring and not good for long term storytelling. Or did we all forget that this show is one of the inspirations for BSG04?

Travis Boyle

I think the interaction with the characters is different because this was supposed to be a season one episode. It came in short so they kept adding scenes to it. It was Robert Picardo's least favourite episode. Yeah the jealous Neelix stuff gets old. At least they make him acknowledge he is being an a- hole and wants to change.

Data Cable

This was the last originally-produced-for-season-1 episode to air, preceded by "The 37s," "Projections" and "Elogium."

Mark Chrisco

Janeway has always had a motherly feeling toward Harry. To her, he is a young officer with great potential she is trying to mentor him to be. He might even remind Janeway of herself at his age. She was just telling him how proud she was of his performance so far in the tube.

Ben Chan

When I saw the title, I just assumed it was an hour long product placement for "Twisted Iced Tea" as shows started doing that back around this time I think.

Stephen Wray

If he's been so great and exceptionable give him an extra pip already ;)

Makhiel

The "rooms and corridors switching places" is a great concept but the episode leaves a lot to be desired. And all the stuff that got uploaded into the computer? Never comes up.

Siva

Not a fan of this one. Neelix is insufferable again. Airlock him. Multiple, repetitive scenes of people walking around getting lost. I think half the episode is just people saying “this isn’t where I wanted to go.” Elogium and another upcoming episode are still the worst of the season but this comes close. And its wild because this aired on the same day as DS9’s 4th season premiere.

Troy Convers

Newsflash: people sometimes get jealous in relationships. It's only old if it's not written well.

Troy Convers

Her comments build on what she's said about him before. Yeah it's clunky writing but its not inconsistent.

xeve

Isn't it one of those things where they should've shown it, then have her comment? I agree with them, it came out of left field.

Jack Mingle

Jealous Neelix always made sense from a damaged psychological aspect, he lost everyone he loved so he now jealously guards everything and everyone that he has.

Time Lord

It just felt like it hit SO out of the blue. This supposedly being a season 1 episode definitely explains some of this writing though!

xeve

but, why did Kes ever like him that way? they don't establish any kind of foundation for their relationship, they just show the discord. Couple that with the age difference and it's hard not to be put off.

Eric Aitala

I kinda figured as much...

Troy Convers

Like back in S1 E1 and the comments about his clarinet? 🙄

Locoturbo

There's definitely S2 episodes I look forward to. This is NOT one of them XD. "Is it a space twister back to the Alpha Quadrant" / "Are they going to play space twister" / "Is it a groundhog day episode" any of those would have been far better LOL

JD Robertson

Avoiding spoilers, but they do eventually dial back on the Neil’s/Kes romance. Your suffering won’t last forever.

WastedPo

I liked the ending to this episode. It was almost Toy Story 3 like, with the way they all wanted to comfort each other. And I think there were some nice moments throughout. But I have no clue what the writers were thinking with making Neelix this way. Don't get me wrong. In real life, people often act like Neelix does within relationships. And it wouldn't have necessarily been a bad idea if there was ONE episode when he was acting jealous. But at this point, acting super controlling and insecure are his defining traits, and it's making it downright unpleasant to spend time with a character that is surprisingly toxic for someone who isn't supposed to be a villain. Realistic, maybe. But it's also throwing a wrench into what should be fun escapist TV.

Ryan

I guess they don't play D&D at Star Fleet Academy, or else they'd know to "never split the party."

Troy Convers

Yep, that database could have been a recurring B-Plot, but what I call 'Episodic Amnesia' killed that idea stone dead.

Troy Convers

Dude, EVERYONE is going to have an age difference with Kes....

Troy Convers

One wonders if you would be so quick to write off Kes had she been getting the green eyed gazungas if a crew woman been constantly flirting with Neelix.

Ben Chan

One wonders if you'd feel a need to question their integrity by positing a gender flip if two male reactors were annoyed by this one-note "Neelix is jealous all the time" storyline.

WastedPo

They probably would write off Kes if being controlling and jealous were her strongest and most consistent traits.

WastedPo

I liked her saying it. It just would've been better if there had been slightly different pacing to the scene, to make it feel more organic.

Troy Convers

Yet they completely glossed over the letch Tom Paris. Let's see, a Delaney sister, a holographic sex toy masquerading as a barmaid and inappropriate presents for a co-worker's SO. If I was Neelix I'd be giving that fucker the side eye too; it's not like he's Harry Kim. Oh, and for the record I call out male reactors on their sexist BS too. Sorry to pop your illusion.

WastedPo

But it wasn't just Tom Paris. Neelix was freaking out because Kes knew what deck other crew members' rooms were located on. These were crew members we've never even seen before, so they're likely just regular people who aren't Tom Paris-like. That's taking Neelix's insecurities to insane levels. (The writers are actually doing him a disservice, if they want the audience to like him.) Like, did he think that Kes was sleeping around and so knew where 5 different crew members' rooms were because she was having multiple affairs? That was the implication about his thought process. At that point, it isn't just that Tom Paris is a dog (which he kind of is, to be fair to your point). Neelix clearly doesn't trust Kes, and feels threatened by her interacting with anyone who isn't Neelix.

Locoturbo

I think this is a very important factoid

Locoturbo

Please go on record to state that this episode is written well XD

You did pick up that this was actually a late Season 1 episode, so it explains the weirdness of the interactions as well as the wonky characterization. Although, to be honest, I'm not sure the characterization really fits with late S1 either. This feels like one of those back pocket scripts, the one you keep on hand to throw into the mix when you find yourself running short of time because of production issues (Community and Dan Harmon were infamous for this), except they didn't do a re-write pass before shooting it. The good news is the relationships do become a bit less histrionic, and the rougher edges on some of the characters mellow out (at least if memory serves) by mid-season or so. Honestly, once you get past THAT episode later this season (no spoilers!) Voyager settles into a groove. You also pinpointed one of Voyager's weaknesses as a series: it was trying to thread the needle between TNG's more episodic nature and DS9's more serialized nature, which is what makes it a bit wobbly at times in its run. So, yeah. Even though Voyager is A LOT better than I remember, watching these episodes does remind me why I'd sometimes head-desk after watching some episodes.

Neil

The one thing I would mention, although I do think some of the dialogue was clumsy in this episode, that tensions between crew members would be normal. These are all work colleagues after all who haven't chosen to be together yet they now face every day, possibly for the rest of their lives, together. Tensions are to be expected, also a Captain giving a young inexperienced ensign some positive feedback would be normal, but possibly it was clumsily written here.

Phenomenon (Doo - Dooo - Dah - Doo - Doo)

Paula - Sounds like "Mahna Mahna" THANK YOU!! When I was a kid, my dad , sister and I would watch Star Trek (TOS) together. One time, when Spock said "phenomenon", I followed it with "Doo doooo, dah doo doo!". My sister smacked me in the head while my dad busted out laughing. Since then -- nearly 50 years later -- I still habitually say "Doo doooo, dah doo doo" whenever anyone says that word .... and it is also the reason I chose my username for Star Trek reacttion channels. Even my avatar is those muppets in TOS uniforms

tal goren

this is exactly what I was thinking watching this.
