I will say regarding the representation here is that it also doesn't call attention to itself. The scene isn't textually about "We're two capable women having a scene together, aren't we a great show?" It just IS. And it also isn't putting down other demographics to elevate itself like there's some kind of competition going on. Nor, I think was it advertized as such a profound thing. It was just allowed to be. From my perspective, I think that's excellent.

Troy Convers

Did it? The episode spends a great deal of time making reference to the love lives of Janeway, Kes and Torres, as if that's a big source of inner doubt. Kes I can understand and it ties into the last episode, but Mark had never really been played up as a plot point and Torres's hallucination just feels out of character. I never thought of the latter two as being defined by their romantic relationships at this point in the show.

Troy Convers

The episode is OK, but feels like a collection of moments, not helped by feeling like a retread of the DS9 episode 'If Wishes Were Horses', albeit with a far more interesting origin for the hallucinations. Some great gothic horror and the Botha are a great idea for a race that deserves a revisit. But the episode is played just a bit too safe and feels like a lost opportunity to really make the viewer feel that the Voyager crew are REALLY in over their head and far from home, Enterprise at system J25 style. On the bright side, esoteric guest stars ahoy in this episode - Thomas Dekker (before he starred as John Connor in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), True Blood's Lindsey Haun, TNG guest veteran Carolyn Seymour who's been in ooh, everything, similarly Warren Munson as Daddy Paris and for the Soul music fans in here (just me then 🙁) Marva Hicks of The 80's Ladies as T'Pel!

I have no memory of this episode.

Bechdel test = Smashed

Siva

Solid episode and one I still remember even though I have not seen this since it originally aired. However I am not sure if Janeway and Torres passed the Bechdel test here? Torres and Janeway were both talking about relationships with men in their lives. Still doesn’t take away from the episode. Their conversations in Parallax did pass the test. And they have plenty of other similar conversations throughout the show. But in this instance they were talking about men.

Troy Convers

Negative or positive smashed?

Hell3Quin

Positive, very very positively, positive. Smashed.

Hell3Quin

It was very oblique, neither knew what the other had experienced. They weren't talking about "a man", they were talking about their experience. I think it passes. Though Im not sure about having Torres' experience being about Chakotey now I think about it. That's the only downside I think. Reckon the writers realised they didn't have any attachments to hit Belana with and reverted to this reverse purile fantasy on the fly.

Makhiel

Decent episode, really love the ending - "I would love to help, Captain, but you see I'm not really here."

Ben Chan

Aside from the other conversations between Janeway with Kes talking about her psychic abilities and with Belanna talking engineering stuff, the end scene between Janeway and Torres was about them. They weren't discussing men as a function of how their existence as characters center on a male character or to further the mens' stories, it was to further their own stories, so I think that's why it would pass the test.

Tijuana St. John

I think I enjoyed your reaction more than the episode! :-D

I'm probably going to step in it some, but imo that test is overvalued. Yes characters should be written beyond 2 dimensions and not feed into strereotypes nor pigeonhole characters interactions, but to preclude topics of discussion between because of a potential of stereotyping/pigeonholing a character is weak writing and tbh viewing. While, a show like Star Trek certainly doesn't spend a lot of time discussing romantic relationships to ignore the subject would be odd. It would be odd for characters to not discuss relationships given Voyager's circumstances from time to time regardless of their relative genders and a diservice to the characters not to.

xeve

I like episodes which reveal something about Kes and/or her people. It's not the first nor the last time in Star Trek gets their minds messed with, not the worst nor the best in that regard. But middle of the road and enjoyable to rewatch once in a blue moon.

Siva

Agree. I only mentioned the test because Kat mentioned it and because other commments had also brought it up. I personally don’t care about it and it doesn’t affect my enjoyment of the episode. Of any Trek show this one does the best job portraying female to female interactions and relationships. I love DS9 but did not like the fact the there were only 2 main female characters at a time and they were both desired by multiple men and constantly being involved with relationships with different men. I feel like they focused way too much on that and not enough on them as their own characters.

Phenomenon (Doo - Dooo - Dah - Doo - Doo)

"Lower Decks" was almost pure fan service to Star Trek fans, but in a good way. The more Star Trek you know prior to the release of each episode, the more jokes and offhand references you'll get (and laugh hysterically at). My advice to Kat is to keep watching more and more DS9 (good advice in any situation) and for both of you to finish Voyager before returning to Lower Decks and basking in the goodness the Great Koala will provide 🐨
