My understanding is the show hired someone who ended up being a fraud as a indigenous consultant. Also, while I enjoy the Stargate movie, by in large I've grown contemptuos of those who(m) debase human accomplishments and achievements by assigning them to some imagined E.T., whether they be modern or ancient. So, I disliked this episode on many levels.

Richard Chaves is a very charismatic performer. If memory serves, it came down to him and Robert Beltran for the role of Chakotay.

In the process of getting a full body Trill Spots tattoo. Plus need to finish a Klingon tattoo, and a Vulcan one

I agree, however, many believe it's true hence ancient aliens et al on the "History" channel and congress wasting too much time on whatever they're calling ufos these days

Knowing what we know now, I wonder how authentic Chakotay's heritage is and it really pulls the rug out from his ethnic origins, not helped by the age old problem of Native Americans nearly always having to be portrayed by Hispanic actors or worse, white actors with a tan. Still, a decent episode and always nice to see Henry Darrow (of The High Chaparral fame) who played the Vulcan admiral in the TNG episode 'Conspiracy'. Yeah, THAT episode.

I now have more face tattoos than Chakotay, but it all started with a pretty standard one on the inside of my wrist. Honestly, the tattoo and piercing discussion was more interesting than anything about the episode, which is bottom 5 for the season for me along with Elogium, Twisted, and two others yet to come. Didn't find the plot engaging to begin with, and then extra demerits for all the problematic cultural content. Definitely in the midst of a pretty low stretch for the show.

Nolan

No Paula, that read on the episode has been out there for 30 years. Reviewer/Critic SFDebris points out the EXACT same thing.

Hmm. Okay well I liked the B story, it was a bit of fun. I liked getting some backstory on Chakotay, even if it is a made up tribe and culture. The idea of coming to terms with your past and your cultural heritage is solid. And it is pretty rare to get episodes about him, especially after the second season. I think the part that bothers me is how they coincidentally keep running into items, races, and people who visited the Alpha Quadrant or who are from there. It just starts to undermine the premise. First its Amelia Earhart, then it is the actual alien species which is connected to his tribe. Space is supposed to be vast but they coincidentally keep finding things from home. This could have been a TOS episode. It hearkens back to the episode where Kirk meets another Native American tribe that was also connnected to some mysterious alien race. If I could re-write the story I would keep the core of Chakotay’s dilemma and his flashbacks but then have him meet some Delta Quadrant tribal people that just remind him of his tribe and show how is able to connect with them because of things he learned from his father. Like they are non-violent and worship nature. They didn’t need to explicitly connect his tribe to this alien tribe. It strains credibility. But I guess it’s definitely in the TOS style. Hey, here is a planet with Romans! Here is a planet with Chicago Gangsters! A planet of Nazis! And a planet with the Communists and Yankees and the exact same American Pledge of Allegiance! But the character stuff here is nice. I give it a C.

Trying not to think about the fake-Native American advisor for the show (who they should have known was fake since he was exposed in the 80s, what the heck)... For Voyager season 2 this episode is still S-tier (or close) lol.

Locoturbo

I do understand the point being made... but I almost feel by making that particular point you're almost causing the problem you want to prevent... They were aliens... and they didn't BREED somehow to make the precursor to / ancestors of Native North and South Americans, they just influenced them somehow. They encountered them and were impressed by them. Nowhere in this episode did anyone have racial prejudice towards anyone else. (there were HUGE prejudices, largely by the aliens but they were societal prejudices / wounds of the past, not racial.) And never did I think about it. Ultimately the only way to not have racial prejudice is to stop dwelling on it. If we sit around with a measuring stick / color gradient wheel enforcing quotas then we'll be forever mired in it...

JD Robertson

Unfortunately, Voyager’s handling with Native American culture is notoriously poor, even by 90’s standards.

Lintrinsic

You obviously didn't notice the ridged foreheads on the tribespeople Chakotay and his father found if you're arguing there was no interbreeding going on. You don't solve the issue of prejudice by pretending it doesn't exist.

TuneIntoSanityFM

I'm so disarmed with nostalgia from the Rimmer salute, I'm not even going to joke about Paula being paleist 🫠

Data Cable

The oft-heard majestic bird cry is that of a red-tailed hawk, though it is frequently used in fiction for the bald eagle, whose actual vocalizations are significantly less majestic (and therefore very Un-'Murrican!)

Phenomenon (Doo - Dooo - Dah - Doo - Doo)

"Imagine the odds...." Especially after they had *JUST* encountered Amelia Earhart alive and well on a world they happened to pass by. These "one in a trillion odds" scenarios of Delta Quadrant aliens impacting Earth culture *SPECIFICALLY* seem to happen just a bit too often

Eric Aitala

And I _think_ the hawk in the episode is a red tailed hawk...

I have 15 tattoos. The majority I've got in the last 3 years after 2 former co-workers went on to start a local shop. My next will be on 4-20.
