I like Bobby Fish… but he’s got this fish gimmick

The specials is where this show truly kicks off for me then we get the incredible Rebecca Front and her chemistry with Capaldi is amazing. The screen crackles with so much energy every time they argue, it’s amazing

And there we have it: omnishambles — the greatest contribution to the English language in this century. 😄

Rime Pendragon

Malcolm totally put Nicola there in front of the poster. You see him staring at the print-out and then says that Nicola looks "a bit edgy", which makes them move Nicola to the middle, right in front of the poster.

streaky

Ah the invention of a new word, I forgot about that. Back then it was a bad thing - now if you're in government and not in a perpetual megaomnishambes you're not doing government right.

Jonathan

Nicola is a great character because you *almost* feel sorry for her, until you remember she's only where she is out of desire for power and status. She could quit any time (or just not have taken the job in the first place) but the prestige of being a cabinet minister was too tempting so she kind of deserves everything she gets. Also, "massive out-of-proportion Israeli-style response". Back when shows could get away with things like that...

Tbh I think Nicola does actually want to use her power for positive change, she’s just incompetent and very bad at communicating/explaining her ideas to her advisors, leading to tense situations where she’ll act out of fear of a bollocking from Malcolm. She’s not a very good person, but I think morally she’s more decent than the vast majority of the characters.

Sebastian Bodine

As much fun as the Hugh Abbott era was getting, it feels like a final piece of the puzzle was set in place with Nicola Murray. It just comes together when they pull back to show the bigger picture in episodes to come.

Kirk Deighton

The 2007ish £ to $ exchange rate was almost $2 to a £1, it was pretty great moving to the US back then. I still wouldn't have spent that much on that chair though.

It was a fancy chair at the time though

It was a fancy chair at the time though. Tbf I bought an argos gaming chair at the end of 22' & it's falling apart.

Laura Murray

The next episode is one of my favourites. I love the feel of this season, because you know that Malcolm has been having to deal with politicians and clearing up their mess for decades. Then Nicola just comes in and does herself no favours. I would feel sorry for her, but she's just so incompetent. Nicola even being surprised that the private school thing would be a problem, shows that lack of awareness.

Tippis

I think that, actually, for the most part *almost all* the main characters are working for positive change — even Malcolm in his rather wretched way. It's just that most of them also get too twisted up in the struggles to make everything happen precisely their way, which invariably corrupts both the process and the intended result. The main exceptions would be the younger aides — Ollie, Emma, Phil, and some of the new characters from the next series — who never manage to express any interest in results other than their own immediate benefit. Conceivably, this is also why they tend to get into such a mess: there's no long-term goal or strategy, just the next rung to climb on to… somewhere. This, and maybe even more so the next series, put it in even sharper terms as they further explore the difference between Mannion and his opponents, and also between Stewart and… well, the world, really. Similarly we get to see more of what it is Malcolm is actually struggling against and how he has learned that a massive Israeli-style response isn't necessarily out of proportion in their chosen business.
