the shift is that hugh was from the right wing side of the party. nicola is from the left wing side of the party ( one of the nutters ). that's why she says there are things she actually wants to do. she does actually want to improve things.

Patrick

Gaaaah, another 4hrs till I finish work and can watch.

Laura Murray

This is one of my favourite episodes. Just an absolute car crash from start to finish. My brain reminds me of Malcolm and his threatening "Little pigs" when I'm trying to sleep sometimes

Sebastian Bodine

As crazy as this episode is, it still feels relatively calm before things go truly unhinged

Jonathan

There is a definite tone shift. Hugh was only likely to rant about how awful his life was, and how he hates being in the job and nobody likes him. Nicola actually has some drive, she WANTS the job and while she's still terrified of Malcolm she wants to use his talents to help her and crush her enemies. It does make the whole thing a bit lighter and easier to laugh at.

Lintrinsic

Not sure I'd describe it as a tone shift but there's a definite change in dynamic. While Nicola Murray screws up and has baggage, you have more sympathy because she obviously has good intentions, however clueless and inarticulate they can seem. You can even find sympathy for Peter Mannion, having to deal with Stuart's management seminar style bollocks, Phil and Emma. Eternally remembered only for an affair over a decade ago. Hugh Abbott is a nasty piece of shit, any good intentions he may have had evaporated decades ago and he only cares about his own aggrandisement and moaning about his sense of entitlement to a flat (probably claimed on expenses) while living within commuter distance. Probably so he can avoid his family.

Ross Nolan

It definitely feels like some of the DNA of 'Yes Minister' crept back in - Nicola (and Peter Manion) is a lot closer to Jim Hacker than the utterly detestable Hugh Abbot.

Lintrinsic

Not sure I agree with that, but I see where you're coming from.

Hell3Quin

Its much more depressing to see the toxic patriarchy in action when you're supposed to laugh at it. Even the occasional push back at Malcolm is welcome.

For fun I tried counting the number of uses of the F-word in an episode once. It was actually the next one up I think (the party conference one) and I lost count after 30, plus at least one c**t.
