To add a bit of context it follows real life events at the time. So in 2010 labour(malcom’s lot in the show) lost the election but tories(peters lot) didn’t have enough votes/seats to win so they joined a smaller party called Lib Dems(fergus etc) to create a coalition government but essentially a Tory government. The Lib Dem were popular at the time but seen to sell out their values to join the tories. Glen Joined the Lib Dem’s probably before the election which is why he’s there.

For context, at this time in british politics the Conservatives were in power but without a majority they only had enough seats to rule if they formed a coalition with the snaller centrist third party The Liberal Democrats (the party Glenn has joined). The Lib Dems often position themselves as a more progressive alternative to the tories so a lot of people still feel betrayed by them helping them into power to this day. Especially since the resulting coalition presided over the infamous austerity policies that decimated public services, and broke a lot of Lib Dem election promises. However there are those who make the argument that the Lib Dems were the minor party in government and so had less responsibility for the policies. Who can say 🤷‍♀️ ironically it was the lib dems who suffered in the end because at the next election, thanks to the lib dems no longer being seen as a trustworthy alternative option for the center right, the tories increased their vote share and no longer needed them.

Paula is right, this is a couple of years on, the election is old news and they are writing to the events of that time. The Conservatives are back in power, but only with the help of the third party, the Liberal Democrats. Fergus is a liberal democrat minister, ostensibly in the same government as Mannion, but from a different party, which will be why they hate each other so much.

I think you got it but just to make clear. Fergus and Adam are from a 3rd party (broadly centre) in a coalition with Manion's party (the right wing party), this mirrored the then UK government where broadly Manion's party has the power but in order to form a government they needed the smaller 3rd party to join them due to not winning the election enough. This in part explains the fighting between Manion and Fergus as they belong to different parties but have to work together to try and get their respective policies through.

Nice to learn that detail about the British election. I figured that it was a case of separate wings of the same party type of conflict with Fergus and Mannion. Although jarring, seeing both sides of the political conflicts ahead is one of the things that makes series 4 my favorite.
