In today's episode of Reluctant Middle-agers Complain About How Easy the Contemporary Youth Has It… 🤭 I know it's probably contrary to the general opinion, but I feel we need *more* of this excellent pre-video banter! And yes, this series in general is a pretty significant shift in tone and dynamics, not just between the people but between the parties and between politics and the public. It's probably also the most cynic season in may ways in how it incorporates and fictionalises real events while sparing absolutely no-one.

Thanks again, for your reactions! I'm old enough, by the way, to remember when tv was only black and white!! But then I was born 33 days before Dr Who! I wish you'd react to Peter Capaldi in "The Devil's Hour"? (He's so good in it) and it's a bit timey wimey! There's also a fantastic 8 part mini series called "Bodies" set over 4 time zones. Some of the stories are heart breaking and beautiful.

If you think she was bad. boris johnson turned up to the Cenataph still pissed, looking like he'd been dragged through a hedge, and placed the wreath upside down. Oh I miss the times when it was considered bad for the opposing party to agree with truly horrific policies, rather than turbocharging them when they next got a chance. Believe it or not, but despite the supposed cynicism of this show, it actually comes across as really very naive today. Oh you sweet summer child Armando 🥲

Welp... Paula's broken.

I love that in every role Nicola's flagship policy idea is to get people to do work for nothing. Whether it's her "fourth sector" launch or telling people to "inspire themselves out of poverty" or "quiet bat-people", every single time it's just expecting people to help themselves or each other and providing them with nothing from the government except warm words.

This show is so accurate because no British politician has ever succeeded and left office popular. Winston Churchill came by far the closest but even he was immediately voted out after WW2 and when he eventually got back in spent the time trying (and failing) to preserve the empire.

Sebastian Bodine

Reflected beautifully by Kenyon and Mannion trying to greenlight an unpaid labor platform showing what little difference there is to the parties for the people.

Nicola constantly creates her own defeats. While she's clearly not the worst, she is deservedly slotted among the worst kind of people like almost everyone else on the show.

In defence of Malcolm, Nicola is genuinely terrible in that her instincts are completely fucking off but she's somehow found herself in a position of power such that the full extent of her incompetence can't be tempered as it had been at DoSAC (where she was pretty much just following orders anyway). It follows organically from her characterisation last season of having this streak of narcissism and vanity, and being power-hungry to some degree (which Malcolm, sage-like, tests here to see if it's the kind of obscene hunger necessary to do whatever it takes, sanction the "dark arts" he's known for, win-at-all-costs. Let him be the work-husband hatchet-man to her Lady Macbeth.). Instead, it feels like she's just enjoying the pomp and circumstance of the legitimately prestigious position of Leader of the Opposition (wreath-laying aside) while getting some degree of power-play revenge over those that bullied or belittled her before. Small-minded, unserious, she's got to go. Incredible acting.

It isn't a question of because it's politics, it's just British TV in general - we don't *do* success, that's not an option.
