Oh yeah, here we go. These are the emotions hitting HARD.

Oh sweetie, I hate to break it to you, but if you are crying this much in Episode 2 I'm not sure your "queer little heart" as you put it, will survive the rest of the show. This is such fantastic TV but you will definitely be needing tissues for the rest of the episodes. I also highly recommend reading a short story by the author (Rachel Reid) that is on her website. It's called Las Vegas Remix and it gives Ilya's POV for the awards and penthouse scene. It doesn't have any spoilers for any other episodes and I think it really adds to what we see in the show. I can't wait to see the rest of your reactions.

Adavan

You are absolutely not alone in feeling the emotions in this episode. I LOVED that you felt all the emotional truths of those moments. Far too many reactors write off episode 1 and 2 as just smut. But it is SO much more than that, and I'm so grateful that you get it! I'm also so grateful that you aren't hating on Ilya! So many people really don't get what he's going through, and a LOT of reactors think he's just stringing Shane along, but you are 100% right that Ilya has the same connection and feelings for Shane, that Shane has for him. I just love that you get it!! It was wrong of Ilya to ghost Shane like that, for sure, but the thing that makes Shane the most mad is that he truly believes Ilya was doing the right thing by ending it, and it makes him mad that he is hurt by it. Neither of them WANT to want each other the way they do. They both want to end things, but neither of them can manage to. Ilya caves and seeks Shane out in the bathroom, and even though Shane is hurt and angry, he caves as soon as Ilya touches him and offers him something like their previous dynamic. Ilya tries so desperately to prove to himself that it was just a physical thing, nothing more. But that last shot of him in the bed shows that he has not succeeded, the feelings are powerful and, they both believe, impossible. It is utterly heartbreaking! You're definitely not alone in crying and feeling heartbroken by their situation. Because we all know that if the world wasn't what it is, they would choose to be together, and give their love a shot. But as it is, they are both TERRIFIED by the prospect. 😞 I absolutely adored this reaction, and I can not wait for more. ❤️

Glad I am not the only one who cried during the scene where they fuck for the first time. I found it to be so disarmingly honest, intimate, and beautiful.

I see your comments on a lot of reactors of HR that I've watched and I appreciate your nuanced insights into this show. thanks.

I think the key to this episode is the way in the first sex scene Ilya — that big rough Russian who has “never blushed in whole life” — is doing active consent and checkins with Shane in a way that was still pretty unusual for guys that age 12 years ago, even to the point where Shane gets a little irritated the last time Ilya asks. I think that’s so unusual and so arresting in any show, let alone a queer one, that it really hits hard. It’s a kind of caring and honesty you don’t expect to see onscreen. (But, honestly, people, if you ever top someone for the first time it’s so important… First-time bottoms can go from enjoying to not really quickly, and you don’t want to find out after that they weren’t telling you what they needed because they just wanted to get it over with.) There are some really fascinating interviews with the intimacy coordinator of the show about how they choreographed the various scenes, and how they developed a system of out-of-view touch signals so the actors understood what the other was simulating at every moment.

Lee Lou

Thank you for such an honest reaction 💚 loved having a cry along with you. I usually get emotional watching the scenes you cried in. Its all the things you said it is and more.. lighting, music choice, the way they block the shots, the way the scene sits with the actors long enough to let them do such an amazing job telling the characters story (so much subtext!) There are some many great moments in this show, but one of my absolute faves is the vegas bathroom scene. The acting was freaking mesmerising. Fun fact - the vegas hotel room was filmed day 1 of shooting. Blows my mind when I think about it.

Time Lord

I'm absolutely gonna have to check out that short story!! Also... I forgot my tissues for episode three. Big mistake.

Time Lord

Thank you so much for all of your kind words!! I'm really glad to know that my empathy and film/theatre background is coming in clutch for a show so beautiful like this one!!

Time Lord

I absolutely need to watch those interviews with the intimacy coordinator!! I'm so thankful to know they had one on set. It's such an important job that I get so annoyed about when people are pissy about that. Also, checking in about consent throughout interactions like that are SO huge and seeing that sort of representation is so incredible to see.

Time Lord

Vegas hotel room being day one of filming is fucking WILD

Trey Harris

Even wilder: they really filmed the scenes set at Madison Square Garden there. (They only had one day there, so some pickups were done later on an LED stage, but based on a photogrammetry model they measured the day they were there.) It’s actually surprising how much CGI they did, but it was a 100% Canadian production funded by the Canadian government, so Jacob Tierney said all the departments had to stretch (and constraints breed creativity!). The cinematographer said that using CGI let them take a lot more chances when they were shooting on location — I don’t think you’ve seen any of the scenes yet where I can describe how. But I challenge you to notice it even once — and the one time reactors usually say “that’s just *too* pretty, is that CGI?” it is NOT. (I’ll just tell you it’s in the finale. But it was a last-minute decision to film it like they did, enabled by the backstop they had if they needed it.) It’s such a gorgeous show with such great editing and sound and music design, it really sucks that as a Canadian production they aren’t eligible for Emmys. (But the boys got to present at the Globes and S1 will probably be eligible for next years’ Globes!)

Charles Terry

Hold up! Why on earth would someone get pissy about that?😭 It’s more that it just isn’t really a thing? It’s just word salad that doesn’t make any sense like.. what’s its purpose? I felt to see any importance.

Charles Terry

I’m sorry intimacy coordinator? That’s not a thing. A coordinator is a coordinator. like a director. What interview? How interviews work! Are you just making shit up now? out of touch signals of what the other one is feeling? That whole last paragraph I can’t even dice second it properly because it didn’t make any sense. It doesn’t take much choreography to do simple scenes like that.

Charles Terry

Which boys? The globes? Really? Wow!! As a Canadian I didn’t even know it was Canadian 😅 Clown hours for me. yeah, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the 1st. I don’t know how you would even know that anyway.

Charles Terry

Hmm I wonder why they did it like that <3

Lee Lou

In an interview, Jacob Teirney (showrunner) said that they realised they had multiple intimate scenes a week, so it just worked out that way. My own thoughta are I think they shot a lot of the internal scenes early (they used a set), easier for set design maybe? If I was an actor, I wouldnt be opposed to ripping the bandaid off straight away.

Trey Harris

Ripping off what bandaid? If you thought I meant they used CGI to paint away nudity, I wasn’t, they wore modesty garments (“socks” they called them) which are basically G-strings without the around the hip part, instead it’s held in place by a “tail” they… well, if you can’t imagine you can look it up if you care. Most of the CGI was just so they didn’t have to spend a lot of time on location clearing traffic, pedestrians, etc., or waiting for the weather — they just digitally modified as necessary. It also let the cinematographer get exactly the lighting he wanted even if it was the wrong time of day or the wrong angle to the sun or whatever. They did a little bit for hockey scenes (since Hudson and Connor can skate, but aren’t hockey players) but mostly they just presented the hockey through the device of the TV broadcast, which let them use a low-resolution “TV video-fied” version cropped into the middle of the screen that was much less difficult to match and also let them use hockey doubles for the actors without having to do so much face-replacement work. That way, the scenes from the perspective of being on the ice where they needed film-like quality were very limited.

Trey Harris

See my reply to Lee Lou.

Trey Harris

Hudson and Connor presented a Golden Globe together. Because it’s a 100% Canadian production it wasn’t eligible for Emmys, but Connor Storrie did host SNL after Heated Rivalry and got nominated for that.

Lee Lou

Hey Trey. I was replying to Charles comment. Maybe I missunderstood. I was talking about the day 1 intimacy scene I talked about in my original comment

Mattnh4981

Completely agree awesome short story
