you’re crying already? :O (NO! I am NOT saying that crying is bad) it’s just that I found the beginning of the show kind of slow and didn’t actually feel something until much later in the series 10:50 what does that have to do with anything? I feel to see what the look has anything to do with being gay? Or knowing how the other one is feeling and how one relates to that because they’re not psychic. I failed to see any reason to be emotional

Time Lord

It's gonna get so much worse by the end of the episode lol

Charles Terry

I guess that I am kind of used to it as a gay man. I’m not sure what that says about me. For example, if someone I am dating is not out yet it has never been a point of contention for me. I’m totally chill with secret or discreet relationships. Beyond the taboo of being gay and having to hide it (sometimes) I don’t find it that different?? But I say that but then one realises that regardless if you’re queer or cishet, everyone is unique. Which brings me to what people said about media, i don’t know what you all are watching but there are plenty of early sex scenes in at least modern media (however far back you consider “modern media”)😅 I’m also very VERY introverted about social interactions so the whole meeting the family and/or friends just doesn’t hit the same way. I feel like my natural indifference had kept me from feeling a lot (but not ALL) hurt feelings if and when things go south. Even if I were straight I wouldn’t be very concerned about being seen as in a relationship or not. Whichever way is whatever to me and it’s recently come to my attention that that is NOT the norm. That being said, I sobbed at the end of WALL•E and Monsters Inc. so I’m not a heartless monster after all! also, I didn’t know how to mention this organically but Ilya’s accent is so cringe. If he’s really Russian or has Russian family to imitate…… I am sorry for offending anyone. But my boyfriend is Russo Ukrainian and no one in his extended family in the Ukraine nor Russia speaks like this in English. Even with a strong accent, sounds familiar but it’s not quite like this. This is like well but it’s like if someone had a naturally strong southern eastern USA accent but was then told to turn it up a few notches you know what I mean?

Hugs Kat 💚 thank you for another genuine empathetic reaction. This show can change a persons brain chemistry in the best way. So freaking happy you get it. Hang in there because it just keeps getting better and better. Dont forget the tissues next time (promise it will only hurt in the best ways)

I've watched this episode over 50 times and I still sob uncontrollably every time. Lots of people think this is the weakest episode of the series. I watched a reactor today to ep.3 who is a straight Irish man. He has had wonderful reactions to ep1 and 2 but he totally did not get this episode. I'm an out, queer 71yo man and I think this episode is so very impactful to gay/queer folks but is somewhat lost on straight people. As Queer people we've all seen and felt this story in ourselves and others. Coming out (or not) is such an all-encompassing part of our being LGBTQAI+ folks. Straight folks understand this but maybe do not realize the depth of feelings involved. I think that is why this series, and this episode in particular, means so much to queer people. Thanks for your videos and for being so real. I'm very much looking forward to your discovery of ep.4-6. Buckle up and bring tissues. Happy Pride to everyone, every month!

Tami

Yeah, keep that entire box of tissues nearby for episodes 4, 5, and 6. Whether for happy moments or sad moments, I've watched this series so many times I've lost count and I STILL cry a gallon of tears every time. I love every episode, but the second half of the series is at a whole new level. Looking forward to your reactions!

Charles Terry

LOL, I thought you said euphemistic and I was confused for a second

Charles Terry

ahh you’re really depends on the person. Even though you can find some things that are fundamentally different there’s a lot more overlap than people think. Especially in the 21st century. I myself am queer and half your age and I reacted a lot differently. for example for me I was quite indifferent and it wasn’t an “all encompassing part of my being”. And that often leaves me feeling empty inside and that’s something‘s wrong with me because I feel like I don’t belong anywhere and I can’t feel that empathising spirit in my heart. Like in my head, it’s not lost on me the importance of a lot of things, but, like another random example, if you were to pick some very gory horror movie, I wouldn’t be horrified at the Gore and other disgusting subject matter simple because…. I don’t know! Numb I guess. but like there hasn’t been some trauma or constant exposure to this type of thing to explain this. It’s just who I am. Although through the Internet and dating apps, I have discovered that I’m not alone in that respect but that doesn’t stop me feeling like I’m bad or something

ned flinn

Charles: I don't think there is a thing wrong with you. It is fine that you reacted differently. It's actually valuable and significant that you did. We all have different life experiences and will react to things differently. I don't think you are numb and I certainly don't think you are bad. You are who you are and that is enough and actually that is also excellent. The one thing I have learned over the years is that "the only constant is change." I am wishing you the best.

Chris

Wow. I started over on Youtube but figured I'd come over here to support you after seeing how you were reacting to this. I have a completely new appreciation for this episode. It somehow hits harder now rather than just being a well done little rom-com/drama short movie. I also figured that you must have some first hand experience with what one of the two was going through. I never had to deal with this, but I know I thought about what I would do if I was in this situation. This show seems to have a way to get through to everyone at least once. You just happened to have a whole episode that did it to you. After #2, I thought you might have a hard time in the last 10 minutes of this episode, and then with parts of the last 3. You had me crying along with you a few times. Definitely be prepared for the last 3. That said, I 100% promise you that everything will be totally worth it. I can honestly say that I have never had a piece of media affect me like this series has. I had to be convinced to watch it by my sister. I wasn't going to watch it, mostly because, years ago, I had gotten tired of gay media. She had to assure me that I would be very very satisfied with it when I was done. She was right. As you have noticed, there is nothing this show does that isn't top level. It isn't often when you can find a show that has absolutely nothing wrong with it. I mean, you could nit pick and maybe find a few tiny little things, but it would be hard. This show swept every single category it could be nominated for at the Canadian awards. Jacob and his team made a masterpiece. I don't normally like stuff that's too emotional, so to make me love it this much is saying something. I'm absolutely loving your reactions so far. You have probably already watched the whole thing by now, but if you haven't, just be ready for the rest. There will be tears, but in the best way possible. I'm sure I'll be crying along with you.

Trey Harris

You think his Russian accent is cringe, or your boyfriend thinks it’s cringe? I don’t know what you’re talking about — it’s one of the best accents I’ve ever heard from a non-native speaker. There are two Russian expat linguists who have done rundowns on YouTube of Connor Storrie’s Russian, and they say it’s excellent, especially in later episodes where you hear more extended dialogues and monologues. Also, which did you learn first, Russian or Ukrainian? I started learning Ukrainian in just the past few years, and I’ve found it’s made my accent in Russian worse, it’s so much more melodic (I think of it as sounding like the Italian of Slavic languages where Russian is more like, I dunno, German) and honestly easier to speak. There are a bunch of stories of Russian background actors in the show trying to talk to Connor between scenes and being shocked he couldn’t understand them. So I think you’re really in a minority to even call his accent poor, let alone so poor it’s ‘cringe’.

Trey Harris

Don’t forget the tissues next time! (That’s not a spoiler — I’ve heard some people cry more at the beginning, some cry more in the latter half, but be prepared either way!) This episode is so interesting, it’s a little bit like Ep. 3 of The Last of Us (and not just in being a gay male love story) — it switches to a whole new set of characters for the purpose of telling a story that will help us understand the developing story we’ve already been watching better. It’s so sweet and romantic and even though it’s also burdened with the sports-fame closet, Scott and Kip are so much more open to one another compared to Shane and Ilya, it’s refreshing. A fun little detail — the bartender Kyle that everyone always calls by name is actually the main character of one of the spin-off novels and the only one (I think? I haven’t gotten through all of them) that has the POV of just one character. I’m curious if they cast the actor thinking in the back of their minds, “he may need to carry an entire season as No. 1 on the call sheet a few years from now”? (Usually characters like that get re-cast for their spotlight, but you never know!) Loving watching these, Kat, thanks for doing it for us!

Charles Terry

I mean if you say so but the Russians in my life say the opposite. I learned russian way back and started learning ukrainian a couple of years ago

Charles Terry

what do you mean recast for their Spotlight? I fail to see how it's anything like last of us. Gay male love story????? Huh?! Are we talking about the same shows?🤣🤡

Trey Harris

I meant it lowercase ‘spotlight’, not for something entitled “Spotlight” — just that if there’s a bit part cast in something many years before that bit part becomes a crucial part in a sequel or later season, the typical Hollywood thing to do is to recast (hire a different actor), or at least be open to recasting. It isn’t realistic if you’re not a Disney able to pay people for essentially holding a spot open on their calendars for years to hold someone to a contract for a movie or TV season that may never even be shot. (And in many other countries — not sure about Canada, but definitely the UK — it’s not even legal to nail down an actor like that in a way that may limit their future ability to make a living because they’re waiting for a part to emerge that may never.)

Trey Harris

Well, to calibrate, what native English speaker would you say has done a good Russian accent lately? I can think of a couple women who are in the “can do anything” category, but I can’t think of a single man whose accent wasn’t much worse… I just think “cringe” was a particularly harsh way to describe it. If the argument is “they should have just hired a native Russian speaker like for Svetlana, the brother and the father”, I get it, but if you accept their casting an anglophone, it’s harder to understand.

Trey Harris

In watching other reactors the pattern seemed to be kind of interesting and unintuitive: “if they’re rare criers, they cry only at the end of E3 and later in the back half; if they’re average criers, they cry throughout; if they’re frequent criers, they cry more (for them) in the first half”. I’ve honestly watched an unhealthy number of reactions (it gave me an excuse for lots of rewatches when my husband never rewatches anything).

Charles Terry

well, I said cringe because native Russian or not, the direction REALLY wants us to know that they’re Russian XD I really don’t know how to explain it. It’s just vibes.

Trey Harris

I don’t see how that is different from “they should have hired a Russian actor, not Connor Storrie”, unless you can think of a case where a director did a good job of NOT really wanting us know they’re Russian? I mean, aside from shows like Chernobyl where the Russians speak English. That wouldn’t work here for story reasons.

Charles Terry

I wish I were more eloquent. I wish I could articulate what I’m talking about here.

Michelle West

I think Connor did a wonderful job with both the accent and the Russian language parts, but then again I don't speak Russian. He is from Texas with no Russian relatives and learned everything just for this role. He did have a dialect coach with him on set and during the week or two before filming, other than that he had no experience with the language. I've seen Russian speakers say his Russian sounds like someone who grew up in the US but had Russian parents but haven't heard anyone comment on his accent either good or bad. I guess I'm saying it's impressive what he did with such a small amount of time to prepare but understandable that it's far from perfect. Also in the books (I haven't read them but have seen excerpts) Ilya is very self conscious of his limited English and thinks his accent makes him sound like a cartoon villain so it may have been a deliberate move to have the character's accent played this way. It's always interesting to hear what people think so thank you for sharing.

Michelle West

I'm not sure how the contracts work in Canada but I know the lead actors signed for three seasons even though only one season was approved with no guarantee of anything further. As far as Kyle's role I don't think it will be the center story in a future season. Jacob Tierney read all the books and had a clear idea what he would focus on. The next season will be mostly book 6 (The Long Game) with some of book 5 (Role Model) included. If a third season gets approved it is likely to be about book 7 (Unrivalled) presuming it is released in time, although there was also talk that Book 6 might be stretched out over two seasons. But if they do plan to focus on Kyle in the future, given the show's preference for using mostly unknown actors, I can't see them changing the actor.

Charles Terry

It’s not so much that it sounds fake/inauthentic for example, but it sounds too overly pronounced

Charles Terry

if Netflix continues it’s track record I doubt it

Trey Harris

Netflix? What’s Netflix got to do with it?
