I like how whenever Star Trek faces a decision about executing someone, Half a life (TNG), Death Wish (Voy), Duet (DS9) and probably others, It's always according to the cases' own merits, and never down to some distant idealistic Federation ruling.

Unlimited Realms

I was both excited for and dreading for you guys to reach this episode! It is so much more brutal than I remember. I think I tuned it out!

Ben Chan

Ah, the age-old question: Tuvix, or not Tuvix?

Christopher Lamont Harris

It was a good episode and the reaction from You two was even more heart breaking

Haven't watched this episode in years. Totally forgot the how cold the ending was. It kind of does go against the character of Janeway. For Threshold I just head canon that the episode is real until Paris collapses in the mess hall. Then the rest is a bad dream from his aneurysm. Then the unseen scene is the Doctor waking him up in sick bay and saying Mr. Paris you are lucky to be alive. The B'Ellana comes in and says the technology works but only 10% of the crew would survive using it.

Captain Chris Dorn

Seeing it talked about on Lower Decks vs actually seeing it on Voyager is very interesting. There are many episodes I dread of Star Trek because of the moral implications.

Stephen Wray

Shaxs: Holy *bleep*! Janeway didn't mess around.

Practially Incarnate

I mean what could she or anyone possibly have said to make it alright, to me the Captain is visibly struggling when doing the separation specifically when she is facing away from the camera. Personally, I think she made the right call.

The fate of Tuvix is perhaps the most controversial argument in all of Star Trek. My feeling always has been that someone on the bridge should have spoken up in his defense, even if they were immediately shut down by Janeway. Speaking of the Captain, I believe once she made her decision, she wanted no one else involved. Note she took no counsel here. It was her responsibility and her hand and no one else's on the killing switch. Janeway's lack of emotion was caused by her hating what she was doing and allowed her to keep her composure to do what she had decided to do. Tuvix might have said something to ease her guilt at the end, but he didn't. He wanted to make sure she never forgot he wanted to live. It's likely she had a very emotional breakdown soon after leaving sickbay. That said, this could have been even more devastating, if that's possible, if Tuvix had been around several episodes, building relationships, confidence and friendships among the crew.

Charles Terry

The writers abandoned the original self-sacrifice ending because it answered the moral question too neatly. Michael Piller’s suggestion, that Tuvix fight to live, turned the story into an ethical dilemma instead of a conventional science-fiction plot. Most of the creative team considered that the stronger dramatic choice, Tom Wright felt it was necessary for the story despite portraying Tuvix’s terror, and audiences responded exactly as Ken Biller had hoped! with decades of passionate debate over whether Janeway’s decision was justified. So like the production team WANTED the ending to be deeply uncomfortable, not triumphant or reassuring. 🤷‍♂️

Regarding behind the scenes perspective the actors who played Tom and Harry did a rewatch of all of Voyager. They review each episode on their podcast Delta Flyers. Small chance you could hear a spoiler The audio was streamable for free off their website last I checked, video via patreon. Incidentally, they're on season 6 of DS9 with actors who portray Qark and Dax.

Imo Janeway has been capable of being cold and cruel as a minor example early on she basically told Tom yes you're being a dumbass at a meeting in the wardroom. Imo it takes the writers and Kate awhile to round Janeway out. Also, imo her shutting down emotionally to Tuvix at the end isn't that out of character. She can't let herself go to a place where she may break or by example allow others to put themselves in a position to break.

xeve

Once she made her choice she shouldn't have asked Tuvix unless she was actually open to his thoughts. It made it worse.

JD Robertson

Listening to this while doing food prep. Didn’t see the thumbnail. Got to a point just before when the reaction realized what was going to happen, read the title and cursed. The show never lived this one down. An issue this show struggled with sometimes was writing the characters to fit the story of the week rather than fitting the story to the characters. Janeways we’ve seen in the past would never do what we see here and we never get to unpack why and that’s frustrating.

Makhiel

Regarding the Andorian amoeba (implying Andoria somehow only has one species) I don't think they were suggesting that it only reproduces by merging, otherwise they would've indeed ran out. That said symbiogenesis is real, at least we think so. The theory is that some 2 billion years ago certain single-celled organisms merged with a type of bacteria giving rise to Eukaryotes - among which was the ancestor of every plant, animal and fungus on Earth. And what once were bacteria we now call mitochondria (that's why they have their own DNA).

Ugly Sonic

Imagine if this is how the actors for Tuvox and Neelix left the show and Tuvix was a new main character from now on. This makes me want to play that Voyager game and let him live and also have two B'elannas.

Ben Chan

I agree with Janeway's decision for 3 reasons: -- As she said, she had to advocate for her two crew members - she had a clear way to save them, so she had to take it. -- For all Tuvix's argument that he's an individual, where does his knowledge of tactical or his love for Kes come from? He *took* them from Tuvok and Neelix and has literally stepped into their lives. He didn't go to Starfleet Academy to earn his rank or learn to cook to earn his position in the kitchen. -- As much as Tuvix says Tuvok and Neelix "live on in him," well Tuvix will continue to "live on" in them when they separate, so he won't really be dead ... right?

Jonathan Bruser

I think it's very telling that Tuvix's emotional appeal went completely unheeded by everyone except the Doctor. Janeway may have done the deed, but the entire crew is complicit. They knew she was going to murder Tuvix, they got to know him as a person, and they refused to even say a single syllable when he begged for his life. I firmly believe that if anyone were to ask the crew why they didn't intervene, the only 'excuse' they could give was that they were Just Following Orders.

Locoturbo

Another episode that I'd like more if I had more faith in the writers. But after some episodes in S2 I just can't. I do think Janeway and some others should have said more. They could have still achieved their intent without betraying the characters.

Hell3Quin

He pulled out that plant and root perfectly Paula, none of us understand why you would say that. Although Kes's question about Tuvok's family is relevant 🤔 especially as Vulkans have a longer lifespan. However, there is a also a question that should be made about his judgement now that Neelix is a part of him. Nm the 'instinct' calls Tuvix makes Neelix has been shown to be too trusting etc. Tuvix would need to be completely reevaluated before he could return to the bridge.

Locoturbo

I've always done the math and concluded Tuvix must be sacrificed. But hearing Kes say "I want Neelix back" makes me question that XD

Hell3Quin

32:40 Kes isn't attracted to Tuvix's body or his mind and personality. Ideally we wanted all 3. Honestly Tuvix died bc noone wanted to use the budget to put him on the cast. Also it would be narratively desolute.

Hell3Quin

Damn how the actor later said he was unhappy about the result bc he got no direction.

Robert Gendron

This one really should've been a two-parter. They had to rush the setup, establish Tuvix as a character, and then rush through the decision to separate him. If they did one episode of just setup and an episode of Tuvix settling in. The doctor finding the way to separate them should've been a cliffhanger so they could have an episode about what to do.

Siva

Probably one of the most memorable episodes of the entire Voyager run. Excellent use of a sci-fi idea to create a philosophical or moral dilemma. This is Trek at its finest.

Nolan

So, like, what happened to the Orchid that cause all this? It never came up in the solution to the problem. Are Neelix and Tuvok part plant now?

Dan Williams

Similar to what happened to Kirk....in the opposite of this. Kirk got split and had to be recombined, but the second Kirk has a "I WANT TO LIVE!" line that makes it almost as questionable as this.

WastedPo

I've only seen about a third of the episodes of Voyager. However, I do know that there is at least one more episode that will cause you to go "WTF?! How did everyone agree to make this episode as written?"

Jack Mingle

In the Voyager game, you get to make this decision for yourself, keep Tuvix or return Tuvok and Neelix.

Jack Mingle

Apparently it was integrated into their DNA and since it didn't cause any issues it was ok.

WastedPo

I think it wasn't so much that her ultimate decision was to sacrifice Tuvix. It was her cruelty and seeming lack of any hesitancy. Likewise, no one on the crew (except Kes) showed the least bit of uncertainty when Tuvix was literally begging for his life to be spared. They all acted like he was a criminal who deserved to die. I believe that's mainly what Paula and Kat were objecting to.

Ben Chan

Yes, I'm aware of their objection. I wasn't talking about their reaction, just giving my take on the situation in general.

streaky

The problem is the captain's issue is that somebody has to do it. Also if you really think about it it's not really murder any more than any time anybody uses a transporter. You're turned off, taken apart, reassembled and rebooted. It's a horrific piece of technology that brings up all sorts of really awful moral and biological questions that the show choses to ignore - Janeway is being the show at that moment vis-à-vis the normal operation of that tech, and that's why I think it's actually a clever episode. FWIW I think it would have been interesting to keep him around much much longer, maybe over a season or two.
