Hot take: Weird name for an episode name I can see it tangentially but again, I could think of a lot more fitting names. But that’s just me going into job mode😅

Hey - FYI - the link is not working properly.

Rose is going to be a catalyst for so much that happens in episode 5. SO MUCH happens in episode 5. You will need the tissues.

Weird cause it's working on my end from two different browsers! I'm not sure what's going on

Your analysis was right on target. This episode isn't necessarily a crying one. It's, like you said, the quiet before the storm, but also very intense at times. That last scene is insane. This whole episode is about Shane and his sexuality and him freaking out about it. I honestly missed that aspect of his running away. I understood the other reasons for him freaking out, but I totally missed the idea that he didn't want to admit that he was gay or truly in love with Ilya. I'm gay too, so I felt irritated after my sister told me. People are divided over #3 for various reasons. I know lots of people don't like it because Shane and Ilya aren't in it and people missed them. Also, the tone, at least for the first half, is different since it's basically a silly rom-com with all the fun dialogue and meet-cute and funny side characters. It's not the same as the first 2 episodes. That said, I personally think it's great. I think the whole series gets better with each episode, although the last 2 are basically tied in my book. They are different but equally as good. So, get ready for the last 2. There are definitely some scenes that will get to you so be prepared again. This episode does give you a break from those for the most part. As you will see, the pacing of this show is perfect. Even #3 fits in perfectly with the overall pacing, at least for me. Love your reactions so much and can't wait for the last 2.

BTW, here is what the author Rachel Reid said in back in September (she was talking about the book at the time, but the same applies to the TV series): "I get asked a lot about Ilya’s thoughts and feelings during (and leading up to) the “Tuna melt scene.” Here are some answers… Ok, so at this point in our story, Ilya is super in love with Shane but won’t admit it to himself. He’s still trying to play it cool, but he has also made this whole plan about getting Shane to spend the night. He knows neither of them have to be up early the next morning; conditions are perfect. He goes grocery shopping, he imagines what he will say when the time comes, he decides he will turn on a hockey game because that might get Shane to relax. All of this is preplanned. Ilya has been thinking about it for days. He doesn’t invite Shane to stay until after they’ve had sex. He waits for Shane to be relaxed and happy, then he asks. He makes sure he sounds perfectly calm when he asks—almost indifferent—but he REALLY wants Shane to stay. When Shane says yes, Ilya is celebrating inside. The “Shane” just slips out, and Ilya is mortified. In his mind he feels he’d just admitted all his feelings with a single word. When Shane says “Ilya” back, he’s flooded with relief and happiness. It’s a mirror of the _____ scene later. [I removed the text there because it's a spoiler for a later episode.] When Shane panics and leaves later, Ilya is DEVASTATED, but refuses to show it. After Shane leaves he’s miserable and embarrassed. And then Rose Landry happens."

Seems to work properly now. Maybe it was still uploading/updating or something.

Lovely reaction, thank you :) This episode has a special place in my heart, so here comes the long post about my feelings :) My first watch of this episode had me so locked in because I didn't quite know what was going on for good chunks of it (literal thinker, so I have to work harder to get context). What it did do was make me want to deep dive into all things HR, because I was hooked. Everyone talks about ep3 being their ah-ha moment, but for me ep 4 was it. Once I'd watched the whole series and then read the book, it took on way more meaning. I think its because of how much book lore and subtext it contains. This is definitely a show that, while brilliant in its own right, is made even better when you've read the source material. It's not an episode to cry over but, when you view the series wholistically and have the characters inner monologue in your mind, there are some gut punch moments, particularly for Ilya. Re the couch scene (my fave cause its full of so much subtext): I know you caught Shane saying Ilya's name for the first time, and maybe you picked up on it during editing; but it was Ilya who said Shane's name first. The look on Ilya's face kills me every single time. He's so lost in his feelings over it, before being a little blindsided that Shane's freaking out over something that made him feel so good. Then he tries to back track by saying his last name. So well written and acted by both the guys. Shane's reactions during the entire visit to Ilya's house is delivered so well, you can see it all on his face, without exposition. Very true to the character and very relatable to me as someone on the spectrum. So happy that Jacob honored the source material and Hudson (who plays Shane) portrayed Shane (as someone who expiriences the world through an autistic lens) with care and authenticity.

Doing the work here with this post .. thank you for sharing :) I love this context.

That look on Ilya's face when Shane leaves reminds me of Ilya's expression when Shane walks away from him in Las Vegas, and Ilya says "Hollander" in a similar tone. On repeated watches, I see how Shane doesn't notice when Ilya is revealing his feelings.

thank you for watching! I love hearing your perspective and thoughts! This is pretty much a perfect show for me. This is probably my least favorite episode, which is to say I love it slightly less, but I think it is the perfect kind of pause in pacing. A bit of a breather in a very intense show. I mean even for a breather we still get the opening montage that spans a few more years and then this incredibly shot ending montage of a single night. I have come to love the books and highly recommend them! but that ending scene is a great example how the show was really able to take it's format and elevate certain moments. The show is actually very faithful to the books. I'm usually a "book is always better" person, but HR is probably the only adaptation I've ever been able to say I really don't know which is better

Another random pitch for the books that no one asked for :P I love how each book also has slightly different themes and deals with couples with different struggles. Themes like body dis-morphia, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, realizing your sexuality later in life and the impostor syndrome that comes with that, ally ship, internalized homophobia, and facing the stigmas that can come with seeking out mental health care. Every character, every couple, heck every team! is dealing with their own struggles and it makes them feel so real and the stories have such heart!!
