30th Anniversary episode next week and its almost the 30th anniversary of it airing!

Lon Suder, you saved the ship.

Makhiel

I have some bad news, not only does there seem to be no background info on Hogan's death but this is also the end of the Kazon storyline.

Todd Miller

"I just want to do something for the ship."

Anyone notice how Hogan called Neelix Sir? Like, why?

Hell3Quin

That bit where Paris does a brake-kill maneuver was part of the all-action advert for this episode (they did this alot) we (16 yr old nerds) were generally disappointed with the resulting episodes. They were going up against the more action focused B5 tbh. I did want the Doctor to be more empathetic with Sutor in that scene in the med bay. (Also the Kazon don't have shields so I honestly don't know how they've ever been a threat, broken record I know).

Jack Mingle

I think Hogan's death was planned all along since introducing him, just to make it hit harder when he dies he becomes established in the crew. Also I think he calls Neelix "sir" because technically Neelix holds seniority as part of Janeway's staff, even though he is still a civilian. Although the dubiousness to how that came to be exists. Hogan just is a nice feller.

Jack Mingle

Star trek has never done action very well, apart from the films mostly.

Makhiel

Sure, you can kill off recurring characters but having them get killed offscreen by a wild animal feels a bit like "well shoot, we gotta come up with something quickly" moment :)

I've tried to get into Babylon 5 a few times over the years, but I could never get past the look, acting, dialogue, etc all felt 70s to me.

Travis Boyle

I was personally happy they moved on from the Kazon

There maybe some callbacks, but glad Kazon are over as a major antagonists. It's pretty crazy how big a jump in quality there will between them and those coming at the end of the season. Sutor stole the show, imo one of the best guest stars in all of Trek (and beyond tbh).

Ouch! Yes, it has aged badly compared to ds9 aesthetically, largely due to their insistence of 90's slacks and silk collarless shirts when off duty. But 70's? Nah. Also yeh the 1st season is very slow, especially the cgi which was in its infancy and improved dramatically in the second season. However, you do have to consider that not only is this the show that gave us seasonal arc. But its the show where the showrunner had already mapped out a 5 season arc before filming began. It is very good when taken as a whole and really was a shot in the ass of paramount. Objectively, not simple opinion I mean, DS9 only became what it was in the third season onward because of Babylon 5. They tried to steal a march on WB when they heard about the project by launching a starbase show first. Unfortunately they didn't have the scripts or vision initially where JMS did. Also, it started on the premise that humans aren't the pre-eminent species. We'd lost a war, badly, against an older and more competent race. The babylon station was an attempt to prevent that happening again. Star Trek would never.

What I meantby looking like something out of the 70s is it has the same film stye as BSG and Buck Rogers and the blocking/framing all felt dated to me. A lot of the acting felt stiff or dated as well, but that could be a matter of personal taste. I get the series arc and I'm familiar with the copywrite issues etc, but could never get emersed enough to care. If it was remade I'd give it another try. But, I could never get into the BSG remake or either Dune, so probably me.

The Doctor playing games with Seska was the highlight for me - who knew the EMH had a "trolling" protocol? She deserved a better death after everything, though. I was fully expecting her to berate/order Maj Culluh one too many times at the moment of their defeat and he'd finally lose it and kill her for leading them to ruin. That would have made sense and been more dramatic. They could have at least done the "rubble flies out from a bridge console" type grievous injury, because as shown it was more "Wait, did she just die?"
