Regarding her leaving the show. Decades after she left and after her mental health issues became public some said that was the reason she was written off. But, before then it was claimed another character was going to be written off, but for reasons which had nothing to do with her they changed their mind . I'd get into details, but that would be spoilery. Imo, they didn't know she'd be written off at this point, but the new writers did want to clean the slate of her character of relationship histories etc.

While I'm glad they broke her and Nelix up, I don't like the crux of the reason is she got body snatched.

Yes its a pivotal Kes episode (and Jennifer Lien gets a chance to act her chops off) and yes she leaves the show. The irony is that the writers (and Lisa Klink in particular) finally get a handle on how to use her telepathic abilities that don't draw from the Vulcan well. Forgot how fast paced this episode is and the uneasy camera angles from David Livingston help that right along. And yeah, purge those Neelix latex feet from your minds. What were they thinking?

Fundamentally, Kew was written off because Paramount wanted a curvy blonde in a catsuit to improve ratings. Not that the new character isn’t great, but clearly the situation wasn’t ideal. I think you’re giving them too much credit thinking they’d planned things out this far in advance, I believe the final cast decisions for season 4 weren’t actually made until after this season wrapped.

"Thinking on my feet" I never even caught that callback to the ridiculous intro, nice one! After that intro, can we really blame ANYONE for leaving Voyager at this point?

One of the potential problems with a character like Kes is her eventual power level can create problems for writers. Earlier in season 2 "Cold Fire" they showed some of this. This is one of the reasons they never really wanted a full Betazoid or other fully telepathic race as a main character, as this would ruin many possible storylines.

Whoever insisted on bombarding our eyes with Nelix feet deserves to be pummeled with pool noodles! That said, Jennifer Lien knocked it out of the park this episode! She had to play "regular Kes," "kinda mean but not too mean so we don't know what's going on yet Kes," "homicidal horndog Tyran," and "bad-ass Kes." No easy feet -- I mean feat! (dammit Nelix!) ST actors being given a chance to play something other than their character through holodeck or possession, etc. is a Trek staple, and it frequently comes across as just an excuse to let the actor chew some scenery, (and they certainly let her) but Lien never broke the illusion for me that she was just playing this other character.

Their original plans were changed by TV Guide polls, not sure how you come to your conclusion other than pure cynicism

Ugly Sonic

I love it in a scifi show when an actor gets to play something totally different from their normal character. Body Swap, Possession, parallel universe dopple ganger, ect ect. Its a great way to see an actor flex. There is this one episode of Stargate SG1 where one of the main characters gets like 50 consciousnesses dumped into his brain and you get to see him constantly switch from person to person. There is actually a Voyager ep almost exactly like this but I wont say anything about it.
