Lemar saying it makes you more yourself was kind of an echo of Erskine saying a similar thing. But crucially he meant it as a warning why the wrong people shouldn't take the serum. Here's the full quote: "The serum amplifies everything that is inside. So, good becomes great. Bad becomes worse. This is why you [Steve] were chosen. Because a strong man, who has known power all his life, will lose respect for that power. But a weak man knows the value of strength, and knows compassion." The thing is I don't think Walker is completely without compassion. I think there's a part of him that wants to do the right thing but he's been fucked up by his previous battle experiences and he's got an ego and is seriously insecure. That's a dangerous combination to get amplified.

This episode was so amazing...really did a lot for a single episode. I agree, I thought Lemar Hoskins was great and he felt like a calming, moral center compared to Walker's craziness...like he talks him into letting Sam do things his way. The question of super soldier serum and it's use, in good or bad was definitely felt in this one. EDIT: I see Paul Mason already posted the quote I was going to about Erskine

What gets me the most about that brutal murder with the shield at the end, is earlier in the episode, you notice on rewatch that that was the same guy who said he'd idolized Captain America as a kid. 😭

This show is so good at illustrating the shades of gray in the world and how different people respond to the negative aspects. The Flag Smashers have a good point, during the 5 years after Thanos the world became a smaller place in essence. There were homes and jobs for everyone. After the blip and the return, people were again marginalised and ignored. Karlie takes her fight too far. As Mikaela said, John Walker was probably a good man but all the trauma of war (which he hinted at in this episode) has made him unbalanced. Taking the super serum took that imbalance and tipped it too far in the wrong direction. I feel like that's a running Marvel theme. Wanda was wrong to basically imprison an entire town but you can't forget the depth of her grief. Tony wants to protect his world and unleashes Ultron. In the bigger picture, the Avengers just wanted to set their world right and in the process cause even more mayhem by causing the displacement of millions. And on and on.

Ego has nothing to do with it. But he's desperate to prove himself because from the beginning of him being Cap, everyone spat on him. Not once did Sam or Bucky give him a chance. I understand why, but you can't take that out on John. Being chastised repeatedly when all you want to do is good will get very old. So he had to start asserting dominance and be petty because that's the only way people will listen. John is a good man, with a traumatic past. No he isn't fit for the shield. But what he did in the finale proves he is good, even if he's done bad in the army. The government have only themselves to blame for making him what he is then appointing him a nigh unattainable name to live up to. Plus Wyatt Russell played this part perfectly. Can't wait to see what they do with U.S. Agent.
