Lister is fed up with Rimmer and is off to study for the test. Which test that will be or if he will pass is absolutely unknown.

Remember everyone, this was filmed before the reaction to the first video went live!

Richard Stokes

Ok so you are entering a bit of a lull here and the next one but stick with it as it will pick up after that

Joshua Lou Friedman

While I agree with Richard, even the weaker ones can contain several jokes and/or scenes that are now considered classic. And look, you’re already halfway through the first season in no time at all… to which upon completion, I’ll further implore you two to KEEP GOING!!!

Mark Ten

Last time Ill say it... "Gallifrey Gals Get Shipwrecked & Comatose." Anyway, I am a Dwarfer from way back. I once worked for a manager who was an expert in all things (so he said, he actually said it once in a meeting)). I hadnt heard of the show but one day in casual conversation (of course, we were expected to hang on his every word) he instructed us (did a lot of that) to not waste our time watching this British show, Red Dwarf. Someone asked why and he said it was "Just too... too..." he waved his hand in the air. Then he admitted he hadnt seen the show, but he could tell from the promo. I immediately checked the show out. So must have everyone else because within a week people were referring to him as "Rimmm-ah". Rimmer's name started appearing on memos, meeting invites, etc. He didnt get the reference and actually asked who this person was and why he was getting Mr. Rimmer's mail! About a month later he must have been let in on the joke. A formal memo was circulated in the office instructing us no immediately desist from making any Rimmer references in the office. He got into trouble since the memo was not approved by HR. From that point on he became "Mr Smegg" to everyone who worked for him.

Bruce Bromley

It does get more bonkers as the seasons roll on. Rimmer mellows a bit, but he'll always be a smeghead. With your reacting to it, I've been revisiting all the BTS and "Making of" video from the DVDs. Along with the audio commentaries of all the episodes, and of course bloopers. I have nearly forgotten how much I enjoy this series.

Richard Stokes

Also you asked what it's like growing up with red dwarf. It was a huge part of my childhood and a lot of my friends, no internet back then so you would just watch and rewatch your favourite comedies. I still know all the scripts in my head and all the intonations and beats of the comedy. Its kind of like Monty python you just end up knowing and repeating the lines in conversations. It was so exciting though as a kid getting your head around the sci fi ideas which were new to me and you will find they do them really well. So glad you are doing this it will constantly surprise you I think

Bruce Bromley

I hoping they stick to it at least through the third season. By then the show hits it's stride.

Joshua Lou Friedman

Their blooper reel compilations (“Smeg-Ups”) can be as hilarious as some of the episodes… which isn’t too hard to imagine considering this cast in particular.

Smam

Bit off topic, but when does BSG start?

Martyn Hill

Even though this is a weaker episode, it was great to see that it still made you laugh out loud at times. That is the strength of Red Dwarf, even the weaker episodes have great moments

Firefly24601

Sometime after TNG finishes. Which will be after the strike is over.

Daniel Deeks

Grew up with this, taped it off the TV to re-watch and re-watch. As others have stated, first two series are fun and light but after that all bets are off and smeg gets real.

Dr Q Who

First watched it properly during the 3rd season due to classic Who ending that same year and Red Dwarf being the only other current British Sci fi on the box. That first episode alone won me over within minutes and became an instant fan, almost to the point of me no longer missing Doctor Who. Eventually rented VHS tapes so as to catch up on S1 and 2, which to me felt like I was watching prequels.

Mordredd

Hehe, if you guys think its bonkers now... You are in for a real treat. Each series gets progressively more bonkers than the last and I cant wait to see you're reactions :D

Bill

I have all 13 seasons and have gone through them multiple times over the years. It's just better television than we had over here.

Richard Stokes

Yes what Joshua says is true, there is always something worth finding in every red dwarf episode, so keep going!

Raven Stromdans

I started watching Red Dwarf as a teenager when it was playing regularly with other more traditional Britcoms on PBS here in the States, like "Are You Being Served?", "As Time Goes By" and "Keeping Up Appearances". Like a lot of other shows of the time, there's quite a bit of lads' "humor" that wouldn't pass muster with today's audiences, especially in reference to sexual attitudes and behaviors, but there's also quite a bit of very clever writing, both in terms of humor and sci-fi, that I feel blunts that a bit. Definitely looking forward to the Gals' verdict by the end of the first series. I'm halfway convinced that they'll continue to watch the show for the evolution of Cat's character alone, but we'll see.

Raven Stromdans

One addition thing I'll note is that there's unexpected moments of emotional depth within the show (possibly made more poignant by being imbedded in a show so full of ridiculousness) that can really be tearjerkers that blindside you. It's going to be very interesting to me to see, given the reaction to Lister's clear loneliness in this episode, what reaction we get when those elements rise to the surface in various episodes.

BriefMortal

Red Dwarf was THE show of my high school years. The screening of series V coincided with graduation and final exams. The nostalgia is heavy 😂

Rob DW

I don't know if anybody has mentioned it, but Craig Charles (Lister) and Chris Barrie (Rimmer) really hated each other in real life in the early series but grew to be friends, so alot of the animosity between the 2 characters comes from a real but professional place.

Raven Stromdans

Yeah, I remember the bonus content on the DVD's going into detail that Chris, a fairly straight-laced and professional actor, was constantly frustrated by both Craig, a poet, and Danny (Cat), a professional dancer, neither of which had much experience performing on a television shooting schedule. Add to that the fact that Craig and Danny were young partiers when the series started and purportedly showed up late to shoots and even still drunk at times from their antics the night before. You end up with a recipe for a lot of resentment simmering in that cast before they got their legs under them and the series really started rolling along.

Chris Neumann

I don't really remember Rimmer being this much of an asshole, I think this episode is about as bad as he gets. I think they realized that Lister and Rimmer need to balance each other out, which is hard to do if Rimmer's too cruel and mean, as well as figuring out his backstory/pain which motivates and informs his negative characteristics.

Kieran B

Thoroughly enjoying these and hope you’re able to keep watching them. Hope the strike ends soon, the teaser trailer for a Netflix series I was in as an SA just dropped yesterday (Bodies) and that was such a great experience on set, but the issues need resolving

Kieran B

Chris was an impressionist and Norman was a stand up so none of them were proper actors, but definitely in terms of personality that was the case

Kieran B

Growing up this was pretty much my favourite show *and* favourite sci-fi, it gets better and better, even the weaker episodes (which are surprisingly few) have a lot to enjoy about them. Most British comedies (and a lot of dramas) are written by one or two people (often writer performers too) and Red Dwarf is no exception, it was written by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor up to series 7, series 7 (and I think 8) were written by Doug and different guest writers each episode (just one per episode though), and after that he wrote them all on his own.

Wade Wallenstein

I came across Red Dwarf randomly on PBS in the mid `90s and have been hooked ever since. It's a wonderful Sci-Fi show with a lot of heart!

William Green

Oh holograms can't sleep lol maybe they need holographic sleep lol

Paul Flux

As a UK fan, yes I did kind of 'grow up with this'. Season 1 first aired in my second year at university, and it was pretty much an instant hit with my student friends, even those who wouldn't count themselves as sci-fi fans. This was definitely one of my favourite shows in my early 20s, and it's great to be revisiting it. Coincidentally, BBC2 has just started re-broadcasting this from the start, on Friday evenings UK time. They started a week after the Gals released their first reaction, so it's running a week and a day behind the reactions.

Paul Flux

One of the other favourites in our student years was A Very Peculiar Practice, which was Peter Davison's next project after he left Who. Sort of a surrealistic black comedy, not quite sci-fi but with certain fantastical elements.

Mordredd

yeah I remember that. it was super obscure even at the time. its been too long for me to recall anything much about it apart from it being set in a university and a bit more grown up than doctor who. A curiosity for the curious.

Nick Turner

I have a whatsapp chat with a bunch of mates where we literally only say Red Dwarf quotes to each other. That's how much of a big deal this is! Loving the reaction show, hope it keeps going for at least the first 6 seasons. After that things get a bit weird.

John Veitch

You don't seem to have understood the "Satan will be skating to work" line - maybe you were thinking of roller skating? It refers to ice skating, in other words, "when Hell freezes over".

Emma Bruckner

The bike Lister was riding is an actual computer from the 80s designed by Clive Anderson called th Sincler ZX C5. Clive appears on several episodes of QI

Danny John-Jules based his character of Cat from a mix of James Brown, Little Richard and Steve Wonder. The baby boys seen in Future Echoes were Danny’s twin sons
