Content

Happy Monday! We hope you’re having a great start to the new week (and month)!

This post today is to get y’alls opinion on a show we were potentially thinking about starting. Cheers to finding more unstruck content during this strike! I believe this show has already been mentioned previously by a few of you, so we’re excited to get your opinion on it.

The show “The Black Adder” is something that has come across our radar. Now here’s the scenario and the question that follows. Paula has already watched the whole first series of “The Black Adder” previously. She brought up that after watching the first season lots of her UK friends mentioned that she really didn’t need to watch it. Saying that the whole vibe of the show completely shifts into something basically entirely new at the start of series 2

So the question is:

Would you all be interested in us still watching the first series of “The Black Adder”? Or would you be more interested in us jumping straight into series 2 with both Paula and I being new to the show?

Cast your votes below! This poll will be open until 12 pm PDT 9/5

Thank you all for your support and input!

I love Blackadder but first series isn't the best. Because of the way the show is done with each series in its own time period you don't loose that much knowledge. That being said would enable you to compare the difference between the first two series. But would say don't write the show off because you don't like series 1 before watching series 2

IcarusAbides

Oh that's a tough one, Blackadder is great and there's some good stuff in series 1. It's worth watching for Brian Blessed alone tbh but if you're only likely to watch one series of the show then 2 is brilliant and probably more worthy of your time

Stephen A

I disagree with the poll. I don't think Series 1 is a waste of time at all! but I think I appreciated better myself after seeing the other series - as a supplemental. A bit like how I quite like watching Classic Doctor Who but only because I've seen modern Who first and now like the backstory. Viewing old Who before seeing any new Who would have been a pain.

Jon Hackett

Only if you're going to get through Series 1 of Red Dwarf....

M

Series 1 Blackadder is rich, stupid, and a weasel. Series 2 and beyond, he's smart and conniving. I also can't think of many standout moments in series 1 vs the later series.

Kieran B

Option 3, watch series 1 at the end But not in place of Red Dwarf because that feels so fitting and gets better and better - as a comedy and as a sci-fi 😁

Richard Stokes

I hope you carry on doing British shows and comedies, I think you would get a large audience just from that. There is some weird kids sci fi/supernatural TV from the 70s and 80s like 'Sky' and 'Chocky' I'd love to see you try that is on YT.

Magazine Party

UK here. Agree with Kieran, the order of the series doesn't actually matter. 2 to 4 are superior but 1 has it's merits so you could come back to it. Really hope you still with Red Dwarf as well. We've only just begun....

Daniel French

Whilst series 1 is not the best in my opinion, it would be good if you watched it, then you can compare it to Series 2 and see how different it is.

Will Rosecrans

It's only 6 episodes. And the seasons are in chronological order, so I think it makes sense to just watch in order. Also, apparently unpopular opinion, but people really prefer the Regency period to the Medieval? I am just baffled. Nobody likes the Regency. Whenever somebody says, "I am dressing up like somebody from the 1800's," you assume they are a cowboy, not an aloof frilly lace cuffed fop Prince Regent. Plus, Brian Blessed shouts very loudly. He's very good at shouting, so it's all excellent loud shouting, sometimes in reference toa horse.

Andrew Duffy

Seconded, I actually came here to say this exactly

Scribbles

Go for it! Season 1 is not as good as the others, but it's still good! Also, you get to experience the glory that is the amazing Brian Blessed. I can't say no to you guys experiencing Brian Blessed.

Phil Birkett

I'm a hardcore NEVER skip season one guy. I'm also a hardcore Blackadder fan who can literally recite entire episodes (at least, I could when I was younger, my sister and I did it once with a series 3 episode while waiting for a film to start in the cinema). But absolutely PLEASE feel free to skip season 1 of Blackadder! Or, if you do watch it, go in knowing that it's effectively a completely separate show from the others, and should (as someone else suggested) be viewed as "supplemental". I think you could also watch series 1, but start with 2 and go back to 1 at a later point. If you must. And do please definitely do more Red Dwarf first - opinions vary but pausing around series 5 or 6 of RD seems reasonable.

Jennifer Medicus

It's not that I think Series 1 is a waste of time but it is SO different and honestly a little annoying. Series 2-4 are great though. If you have an OCD issue then by all means watch season 1 knowing it's going to get better/different.

Colin 3of5

was the first season of TNG worth watching. Did you regret watching christopher eccleston in the 1st season of Nu-Who. While it's not as good as the later seasons. I have always considered it watchable.

Lemmy's Mole

Yes, Blackadder 2 onwards is 5 star stuff, but season 1 does have some magnificent episodes, with some fantastic performances. Personally I'd give it 4.9 stars. I am of the generation (John Pertwee, Tom Baker are my Doctors) so remember fondly season 1. And yes, don't stop the Red Dwarf there is so much hilarious proper Sci-fi to come... I've not missed an episode yet!( 35 yrs long service medal )

Scott Archibald

I also really really highly recommend you check out Babylon 5, perhaps the pilot movie. I know I recommended it a few years ago but I think now would be a good time to check it out. It is extremely well made and the characters are probably some of the best written in all of sci fi.

Red Claw

Black Adder is AMAZING! You should of course react to that. Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry and Rowan Atkinson. That alone is stellar.

Nistrali

Ohhh. It's super close! I'd have jumped past season 1 of Red Dwarf though, so perhaps I'm not the best judge, but I'd definitely give season 1 of Blackadder a miss.......

Rowan Talmage

Seriously if you do Black Adder AND Red Dwarf then you gave officially covered all my faves from growing up.

pbaker

I feel bad saying series 1 is a waste of time but series 2 onwards is where the best stuff is. Try to remember not to skip The Cavalier Years and Christmas Carol between series 3 and 4.

Kirk Deighton

As someone who isn't a huge fan of the first couple seasons of TNG or Red Dwarf, Blackadder's first season is on an even higher level of "skip it" for me. It doesn't even have the plot or character benefits the other 2 have.

Bruce Bromley

Lately. I have been enjoying when you have both reacted to a show blind. Since all four seasons happen in different time periods, They're all self contained and can be watched on their own. Although , IMO, there is a progression to the Blackadder character you can't appreciate without watching all four. On another note, has anyone mentioned the British series "The Prisoner"? An hour long show that was only 17 episodes, that is certainly not a comedy, but very relevant, even today.

Josef Schiltz

Series One of Blackadder is brilliant! The biggest pluses are Brian Blessed and Peter Cook. Anything with Brian is a plus, EDNA!!! Of course, not your usual SF fare, but hey! Love it!

BrightHeart

Honestly the first series is the worst of all of them and honestly compared to series 2, 3 and 4 I just couldn't gel with it much.

LatePaul

It's not the period it's the quality of the episodes.

Alexander Caldwell

Agreed it is a great show (Zathras for President!!!), and they may get to it eventually; unfortunately, it's owned by Warner Bros, so it's on the struck list, and they plan to watch BSG after they finish TNG post-strike, so it may be a while.

Kieran B

I love the Regency period… I suppose that might be the assumption in the US though, but wouldn’t be in the UK

Kieran B

I’m exactly the same and that’s how I feel about s1 of Blackadder, and agree with the S6 point of Red Dwarf

Colin 3of5

Kat and Paula are well aware of the existence of B5 and of the wishes that they would react to it

Angelus-1701

I’m not the biggest fan of season 1 but watching it does mean more Rowan Atkinson & Brian Blessed 😇

Lemmy's Mole

Ha! Almost Colin, next comment down mate. Fun fact, a friend of mine once witnessed Andreas Katsulas sing " To dream the impossible dream" at a B5 convention.

Mordredd

Yeah, its a tricky call. I totally understand the need for a poll to make sure people are happy. I voted series 2 but I'm still very happy to watch 1 through with you guys ;) I don't think series 1 is bad at all, its a bit rough because its their first go at it and its an unusual formula to make work (the protagonist is the villain and the humour is watching him dangle like a fish on a hook when his schemes backfire) and a lot of the first season does need a working understanding of either the historical War of the Roses or Shakespeare plays about the War of the Roses. There's plenty of sheep humour though, that's universal. Like Red Dwarf the seasons generally get better and better so if you like season 1 you're golden with the rest. Also at just 6 episodes a series it's not long to wait for it to pickup if you're not that into it.

Chris Neumann

The Prisoner is a good call, funky, weird, stylish...

Chris Neumann

They may even wecognize an evil Fwench wevowutionawy.

Chris Neumann

I didn't realize the Regency episodes were disliked, I always rather liked them. As a situation it's a great place to put Bladders, right between the powerful and powerless.

Anthony Wickizer

I understand why people say no. It’s so different. But it helps the context I think. Just like season 1/2 of TNG. Even though it’s not quite the same thing.

Henchman Twenty1

Obviously I am in the minority here (and I'm fine with that) but series one is my favorite, followed by series four. I don't want to debate why as it'd involve spoilers. All I'll say is Canterbury!

Salix

Series 1 is a good watch.. after you have seen everything else.

Lemmy's Mole

Your nose is smaller than I expected.

Prime

Season 1 has a different feel, it's on film and Backadder/Baldrick are basically flipped. All of the cultural relevent moments start at 2.

Jade Ellis

I voted for series one mainly because it will be good to see the reactions to the difference between series. Plus there are some good bits to series one.

Funny That

Ahh, can't we just be a wee bit rebellious and take a rain-check on the first series? Of course the world will not end either way, but the first series is effectively a laugh/reaction track and not a live audience reaction. Then again, I'll ultimately be watching a reaction track anyway...

Rime Pendragon

Love Blackadder ! Hate season 1. I would just do season 2.

Mark Ten

I started with Series 2. (Love 2,3 & esp 4). I did eventually, go back and dont think I would have watched the rest of BlackAdder if I started with 1.

Artemis Zeidman

The only thing I know about this show is that Hugh Laurie is in it and that he plays a similar character in Annie Lennox’s “Walking on Broken Glass” music video. Let’s give it a whirl.

Chris Neumann

!!!! You have a woman's leg, my lord!

Thontor

It's only 6 episodes. I say, why not!

Josef Schiltz

!!!! You have a woman's purse, my lord!

Katrine Myra

So long as you're aware that series 1 is very different, you might as well take a look and see if you like it. Though honestly, it's completely irrelevant to the rest of the show. Series 2 might be a better starting point.

James Wilson

Each season is its own contained thing. Season 1 is definitely not the best but it is still enjoyable. So why not watch it say I! At least you will get to experience Sir Brian Blessed in all his glory.

Robert Gendron

I voted 'No', mostly because it is so different from Series 2 on that there is a good chance that you'll get turned off of the series before getting to what people remember and love when they talk about Blackadder. I think it really comes down to Paula's opinion, she's seen it and is probably the best judge of whether she wants to watch it again and if she thinks Kat will like it.

Richard Stokes

Best compromise I think is probably to start with season 2-4 then do 1 at the end.

Josef Schiltz

Zathras: "President? Maybe not for Zathras. Zathras has . . . wrong tool for job!"

Nolan

Maybe watch it, record it, but only put it out as a supplimental while you do Series 2 on weekly.

The Crazed Spruce

Yes, there's a dramatic shift between series 1 and 2, but I still voted for series 1. It's still entertaining in its own right. Just be prepared for pretty much everything about the show to change in between seasons.

Kieran B

Only in s3 and s4, he does play 2 guest characters in s2 though

Joshua Lou Friedman

Agreed with all of the above… see it and wether you like it or not, at least stick THROUGH it to get to the goods! 🤩

Darryl Glynn

I'll jam your radar with the TV sitcom "Bottom". My all time favourite show.

Martyn Hill

Although I voted to skip season 1 (at least initially) as I think the later series are more consistent, I am not unhappy that the poll is to do season 1 as there are some very good moments in there.

Luke Lawley

Personally like the 1st season.

Zaz

I’m watching series 1 for the first time. Totally different to the rest. Just be prepared for it to get much better after series 1
