My2cents: Lister was undisciplined when the crew was alive and spent his time flouting authority in small ways. But he wasnt as disgusting as he is now because there was the crew & officers (other human beings/living people) to keep him (somewhat) in line. But much of what he becomes, the almost total lack of discipline is a reaction to the loss of the officers and crew that kept him to minimal standards. Its an over reaction to death and loneliness. He is the last human being and has no tribe to keep him in line

Ladies, to all your questions, "Yes". I do hope you'll watch, or have all ready seen the Making of Series One. One thing I'll share is the Grant and Naylor didn't want a monster of a week show in the beginning. That is why it's so self-contained. All I'll say they do expand and if think Doctor Who is timey-whimey, hang on.

Juzzie

Here you begin to see the truth to Rimmer. He HATES himself. There is deep down a part of him that sees that his behaviour is awful but he can't stop himself from doing it. The big thing about this show is the writers were really fascianted by psychology which is why lots of the issues the characters face especially early on are internal. Series 1 is the weakest series but is still good and its only up from here. I am glad you are enjoying it, and I am along for the ride. :) This show is really special to me as it was my mother's favourite comedy to and my brothers and we used to watch it religiously we wore out our vhs tapes of it. :D

Im all smiles watching this with you. Its been years since I last watched these episodes (with my friend's kids when they were young) and its fresh again.

33.35: Paula attempting mesmerism! Epic fail! BTW: I like the new logo!

New subscriber here, I think you are missing the point of the intros to this series. Lister/Rimmer are literally abandoned in space and time, it’s a terrible situation with no hope for any of them. The music at the start of the show sets a tone of tragedy where us as viewers can enjoy the comedy that follows.

NORth Western Electricity Board was a regional electricity supplier back when our electricity distribution was nationalised. The whole electricity network was unmanageable as one single entity so it was split into regional distribution boards (obviously interlinked to each other for national electricity backhaul distribution). Craig Charles (and Lister) is from Liverpool, which is in NORWEB’s “catchment area”. The distinctive Scouse accent of Lister is Liverpool’s accent. It wasn’t long after this was broadcast that electricity was the next in the Thatcher-era Tory government privatisation of public services… like that’s always a good idea! Think it was 1990 when legislation to privatise them was passed but the Tory party booted out Thatcher (for unrelated reasons) and replaced by the personality-less John Major who actually oversaw the privatisation of the electricity industry. Privatisation of public utilities was supposed to introduce competition. Well, I can choose who I pay but the actual ownership of the electricity, gas, water, roadways, railway etc infrastructure is still owned by a privatised monopoly for each.

For those of us that know the show, your speculations about what might or might not happen in future series are hilarious, and it's so frustrating not being able to comment!

This is I think my second favorite episode in the first two seasons, because it's absurdly entertaining to see Rimmer have a target other than Lister to really assail with his internal bile...and it's ridiculously satisfying that target is HIMSELF. I also love Cat doing weirdly interpreted cat things. Without giving too much away, I will note that the nature of the relationships on Red Dwarf never really get past sort of...antagonistic camaraderie. However, I honestly feel like the dynamics of the relationships between the characters (dysfunctional and conflicting as they are) is part of what gels the appeal of the show as a whole throughout its run. Anyway, I'm super glad you two are still into the show and are looking to continue it for the time being. Really enjoying taking this journey with you and looking forward to accompanying you on Series Two!

I think in many ways the early series is a tragicomedy, Lister is the last human alive as far as he’s aware so his ‘slobbiness’ to an extent is a reflection of that depression early on. Even Cat here is trying to stay sane with being alone. The books go into a bit more detail and depth with all of this

Wilss

I'm definitely in for the full Red Dwarf ride!!

Ray Hock

New subscriber. I love the reactions. Is there any way to get the volumes closer to the same level? I need to have the reactions blasting in order to hear the show.

Wade Wallenstein

I'm so excited you're enjoying Red Dwarf! Also knew Rimmer's bit at the end would make you laugh lol

Stephen Wray

With the cat roller skating at the beginning Danny JJ was in starlight express at one point.

PickettsChargingPort

I'd been a bit worried that the 'lads' moments would be too much. I'm glad that it doesn't sour things.

Brodie Vickers

So it's 2 eps a week going forward right? Good stuff ladies. Do you have a date set for Blackadder yet?

Wilss

Is that what they said? 2 a week?

Josef Schiltz

The Master: " Oho! Paula! You'll have to do much better than that! The mesmeric paths have to be excited, inflamed! if you wish to master hypnosis, why then you . . . . will . . . . have . . . . Wait! What? Where in the matrix am I? How did I get here? What is this thunderous logo that sweeps across the sky? Wha? "Gallifrey Gals"? What does this sign say? "Beware of the shepherd!" What's that large shadow blotting out the sun? That noise of purring thunder and that fearsome thousand foot moggy looming down from out of the cloud's base? It's smiling! No! NOOOOOOOOH!" Paula: "Shepherd? What are you doing over there? Kat: "Little horror!" Shepherd: "Meow - Urp!"

David Shadwell

You do get a bit more on Rimmer's backstory through the run and, to a lesser extent, Lister's as well. They are both tragic characters in some ways, who have dealt with their start in life in different ways. The novelisation of the series goes into more depth for both and is a cracking bit of writing by Rob and Doug. Laughs, pathos and sadness that the series didn't have time to go into. Well worth a read but not the first one until you have got past season three. Spoilers!

Wilss

Splendid!

Firefly24601

The plan is for two a week starting in Series 2, but real-life situations can sometimes get in the way of things. If scheduling and workload permits, they'll be doing two per week.

Josef Schiltz

An earlier BBC attempt at SF comedy in the 70s was the mostly forgotten Come Back Mrs Noah which starred Mollie Sugden. This only lasted a few episodes and was from the same team that created Are You Being Served, Grace and Favour and It Ain't Half Hot Mum.

Paflad

Another great reaction. I'm always a little worried with older, slower stuff like this that it might be nostalgic rose tinted glasses on my part and it won't hold up for people who weren't weaned on it but you've made it through a full season with your burgeoning fandom intact so huzzah, and full steam ahead!

Firefly24601

I think a fantastic American pub quiz category would be "Pick the phrase that ISN'T a British sitcom" because no one would get it right.

Dr Q Who

I think seasons 1 and 2 may have been done back-to-back as they first aired in early and late 1988 respectively.

Travis Boyle

Great reaction when you both realize there will be 2 Rimmers. 😂

Darryl Glynn

OK, one more season until the REAL fun begins. :)

Dr Q Who

Can't wait until you two get to a particular S2 episode as I reckon it'll be one of the favourites so far.

Troy Convers

Will we see Kochanski again? In the words of Sam Beckett, oh boy...
