You say that the toyota hilux surviving is impossible, but on top gear they tested the durability of this thing, they brought it to hell and back, smashed it, drowned it in the sea, set it on fire, even have it go down with a building demolition of a tall building and it survived all of it, it was not looking too good, but the engine started and Clarkson was able to drive it. Toyota hilux is well known for being tough as nails and indestructible, so honestly, I actually can kind of believe the advert.

I can tell the covid-booster that I got yesterday is really wrecking me because I cried all the way through the second "I Still Call Australia Home" video. I also love commercials that tell a story and it makes me sad that our advertisers in the US can't be bothered to be that inventive.

Yeah, Top Gear ended up retiring the Hilux they put through those brutal tests on a plinth of honor because they ultimately felt like it had earned it having beaten very test they threw at it. Probably the only time I've ever felt sentimental about a vehicle that wasn't actually mine.

I *do* call Australia home! Born and raised here in Melbourne. I've definitely seen all these ads, apart from the newer Baby Come Back Hilux ad. I wouldn't be surprised if that one was just in rotation after I stopped watching regular free-to-air TV. It's a bit cheesy but I do love 'Still Call Australia Home.' There's something about those 'patriotic, but not *too* patriotic' songs that hits just right. 'We Are Australian' comes to mind as well. And obviously I would love if you two made the trip over here, but I understand that isn't a realistic notion in the slightest, given how incredibly expensive it is to travel. I'll just have to start campaigning local conventions to bring you out as guests! PAXAUS next year perhaps? :P

Hi Kat and Paula. Just a quick additional info regarding Lister and the painting Red Dwarf detail that is at the beginning of the episodes in Season 1-2. In British Military slang - my mother was in the ATS - that would be called Jankers. Mum was placed on that for being late on parade. She ran to catch up, but was spotted by an eagle-eyed office. She was put onto scrubbing walls and mopping floors. A colonel passed her by and said, "Enjoying your Jankers, Private Green?" I suspect the writers of Red Dwarf were probably referencing Jankers by putting Lister on outside the ship maintenance.
