This is such a great episode. Rimmer's new outfit.. The Captain Emerald

Jasper de Vries

I am impressed Kat remembered the time Lister spent in Art College.

Rob G

It feels like order is being restored to the universe, glad you both liked that one. Really looking forward to the Polymorph episode next week. Bodyswap isnt on my list of favourites but who knows you might really like it, onwards and upwards!

Paul Baldwin

This episode for me showed me that rimmer could be quite honorable and lister whilst he is a good man he could be quite crafty

Bruce Bromley

A new production designer and costumer designer helped with the new look of the sets and clothes, I can't remember if they get a version of Planet Hell, but there is a bit more location shooting.

Raven Stromdans

This one is a little hard to quantify for me. I love the bottle-episode effect used here to force Rimmer and Lister into close proximity again, resulting in their comparison of sexual activities (although I stand by the premise that McGruder was actually Rimmer's only sexual experience and that he was only making up the liaison in his brother's car, presumably to distract from the sexual aspect by waxing poetic about the car, which he genuinely admired). I think there's some great bits here, but I do feel like the new turn the series took was still trying to find its footing at this stage. Once it does get its feet under it, though...boy does it ever take off. Looking forward to seeing your reaction to the next few episodes! In the meantime... Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Gals!

It's refreshing to get an episode where Lister is more of a dickhead than Rimmer! Though it took starvation and near death to bring him to that point.

Mab7373822

It's also worth noting that Rimmer and Lister's relationship was genuinely evolving here. Lister tries to psychoanalyse Rimmer in the beginning, to help him see why he is so unhappy. Rimmer is completely supportive in trying to keep Dave alive, even going so far as to honestly say that he wasn't enjoying seeing Lister in a bad spot. All his advice is selfless and is trying to keep his friend alive. It's a brilliant trajectory... which gets completely torpedoed with Lister's deception. This is such a great episode and would have been a brilliant two-hander stage play.

This is one of my favourite episodes of this series, I absolutely love it even though Lister is my fave and he acts awful here!

Rob G

Thats an interesting comment and thinking about it Rimmer was so impressed by Lister because thats the only time anyone did anything honourable to him in his eyes. But ofc the irony is nothing ever good happens to Rimmer and Lister as decent as he may be did a nasty on him.

Beyond Hope

Don't remember any more location shoots until the re-re-revamped Series X and beyond. Lots of Star Trek style studio-based "Planet of the Week" shows though. Think it was because the series was filmed in front of an actual studio audience so location shoots limited the comedic reactions that the actors could work from. But trying to remember 20+ years of Red Dwarf needs way too much RAM for this Talkie Toaster to handle :P

MCT

It's been a while since I read most of them, but I think in one of the novels, possibly Backwards, it's revealed in the narration that Rimmer panics upon being faced with the sudden embarrassing question and makes up a lie on the spot and rabbits on about the car for that very reason.

Aidan Lunn

Just to reiterate something you might have missed because of the speed which you had to read the scrolling text at the start of the previous episode: they’ve not replaced Holly with Hilly. Holly changed gender to look like Hilly as a way of remembering her, as he fell madly in love with her. So yes, there was a transgender (non-human) character on TV 35 years ago!

Rob G

Its so weird seeing people say episodes are their fav when others dont care at all. An upcoming episode Bodyswap is not one I care for, but it might be a favourite to some? This is what Red Dwarf is about I guess. Lovely!

Mike Doel

Heh G Girls, just joined your channel, good ot be here. YOu mentioned Blakes 7 When (hopefully) you get to watch it, Im sure you will feel a familiarity with Dr Who episodes from the same period. Period BBC effects, sound effects. Also some of the actors. A great series in its day, you will enjoy it. Looking forward to your reaction :)

Glenn Dudley

Great reaction girls! "Marooned" was never one of my favourites and as such I hadn't watched it for ages but it was better than I remembered. Glad you're still on board with the show because there's some awesome stuff coming up - the next episode is, in my humble opinion, the best of all Red Dwarf episodes....enjoy!

Rob G

I totally brought this up in a comment on Youtube saying that this was not was intended but for modern day people its going to be interpreted as such. The character switched because Norman left the show and it was just an obvious decision to get Hatty in to replace him considering the end to season 2. Holly is not a transgender character at all. You can try say he is, but he isnt.

Aidan Lunn

A character changed gender by choice, that makes them trans! Their reasons for doing so are irrelevant (and private!) Transgender people existed and were known about in the late 1980s!

Rob G

Btw what does 'So yes, there was a transgender (non-human)' mean? Are trans people non humans? Explain yourself.

Aidan Lunn

It’s just there to state a fact. I don’t think there were any human transgender characters on UK TV until Hayley in Corrie about 10 years after this.

Rob G

Awooga Awooga, Agenda alert Awooga Awooga. Cya take care.

Aidan Lunn

What agenda? I’m stating facts. Holly was an early (probably first) transgender character on UK TV albeit non-human. Hayley Cropper from Coronation Street was the first human trans character on UK TV around 10 years afterwards (I remember the unjustified public outcry very well!)

Rob G

Give quiche a chance ffs.

BriefMortal

When people talk about the show getting good here, I think that is more a reflection of the increase in production skills and budget. Whilst the writing feels like it tightens up over the first few series, I don't think there is any leap in literature with series 3.

Blower

Btw, the dog food Lister ate was real, as in he ate real dog food when filming that piece - as he wanted an authentic reaction apparently. 🤢🤮

Blower

The things that boy can do with alphabetti spaghetti.

Joel Featherstone

There were so many weird retcons there should be an... appendix.

Sebastian Bodine

If it helps to digest the changes a little bit, fans have speculated that crossing dimensions with the Holly Hop Drive was the reason we get lapses in continuity. The ship and crew get slight changes to their look and past.

Mark Ten

The first episode of series 3 was rushed. It was a replacement for an episode that never was fully written called "Dad" and would have continued the other dimension story from the end of series 2.

Mark Ten

Never let continuity get in the way of telling a joke...

Paflad

I have to admit I'm usually a stickler for continuity. I have this (very high faluting and arrogant idea for someone who has never created anything) that creatives should stick to the established rules and if those rules constrict them they should consider that a challenge and figure out a way to write around them. That being said I give Who and Dwarf a total pass for their, shall we charitably say spotty, continuity because I love them and I'm apparently a massive hypocrite.

paul

Great episode, so many moments I could pick out I still really love the line: "I've seen... West Side Story..." 🤣

MCT

I think he says in one of the DVD documentaries that it wasn't actually dog food but it tasted so bad that it may as well have been. He admitted that he had often told people it was real though.

MCT

Ugh, I just looked it up, it was tuna mixed with meat jelly. Rank.

Blower

Oh well, they even retconned that!

John Veitch

I think we can assume that Rimmer was at the very least exaggerating his encounter with Sandra. Maybe they awkwardly got their hands on each other for a few seconds but she pulled away because he seemed more interested in the car than her, but to Rimmer this was a major milestone.

Krissie

15 for me but the legal age in the UK is 16 so not that bad

TuneIntoSanityFM

I'm with Lister on this one. Twelve year olds Do think about sex, however much we might prefer they didn't. Nothing sinister, no gasps of shock from the audience, just the most exciting day of young Dave's life! Why do people have to read negativity into it? 😅
