Good on Paula for finding the clitoris before it was shown.

This is one of the foundational episodes of the revamp of Red Dwarf and I feel like really solidified the series going forward...or I may just feel that way because I think it's one of the very first episodes of the show I ever saw. The plotting, the silliness and the introduction to the new sets exposed in this episode really set things apart from the previous seasons in a way I feel neither Backwards nor Marooned managed, so for my money, Polymorph actually get the credit for successfully kicking off Red Dwarf as a bonafide classic series. As a note, back in 1993 I stumbled across an issue of Red Dwarf fan magazine in a comic book shop in Monterey CA, which came with a Starbug Pilot Kit (a keychain with a picture of Starbug on it) which actually referenced this episode in a comic that was in the magazine. Specifically, it mentioned the second Polymorph in the container, which mistook Lister's sock drawer as a room full of life forms to suck emotions from...and subsequently starved to death. Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Gals! (and wash your socks on a regular basis lest they be mistaken for evolving into a new species)

Thursday has officially become my favorite day of the week thanks to this series-watch-through.

John Veitch

Notice Kryten's accent changes for the lines "It's heah. Somewheah." as they're going down to the cargo bay. That brief scene may have been filmed before the main studio recording, when Robert Llewellyn was still intending to give Kryten a voice similar to the one David Ross gave him.

Jasper de Vries

To add to the credit of Polymorph, it was the first episode where the classic four actually worked together as a team. Both Backwards and Marooned had them split up in pairs and Cat/Kryten in Marooned is close to a cameo at that.

Josef Schiltz

Robert Llewellyn - who plays Kryten - is of Welsh ancestry - who'd've guessed it? - and was born in Northampton, as was the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith. This episode is so much fun. On my third watch through.

I really love how the Polymorph allowed us to explore the characters emotional makeup. Cat without vanity is a complete non-entity - vanity is literally all he has. Kryten is one emotion away from leading humans to their deaths. Rimmer is insufferable but in a completely different way. Lister is one emotion away from being a psycho Space Marine.

Bruce Bromley

Certainly needed this today to lift my spirits. Robert Llewellyn is pretty active on YouTube these days. One, His Fully Charge Show about electric vehicles and living green. His other, CarpoolUK has him driving around people while chatting about all things. He's had the other members of RD on as well as other notables. Here is the carpool he has with Sir Patrick Stewart, driving around helping with Patrick's errands. https://youtu.be/zvNMYqWZ4BM

Also, even aside from the Polymorph, there is rapid character development here. Lister is making attempts at self improvement, making a "classy" meal for Cat. Rimmer legitimately takes charge in the crisis, investigating Holly's report and leading the evacuation plan. Cat high-fives Kryten and shows legitimate concern for Lister - he is nearly fully domesticated now. And Kryten is becoming more embedded, particularly comfortable with Lister and Cat. Holly is also really competent jn this episode, quickly working out what the Polymorph was trying to do to rile Rimmer and analysing the creature's DNA profile. None of the characters back in series 1 or 2 would have been as capable.

Mark Ten

This is one of my favorites.

Brodie Vickers

“Behold my glory!!” 🤣😂🤣

Brodie Vickers

They had to go through every accent in the world for Kryten, for a while he was originally going to have a Swedish accent "Hallo me name is Kryten."😂 until it was realized that it would send everybody mad.

Graham Mills

And for clarification for anyone that needs it, that surname is pronounced Loo Well In.

Paflad

A near constant stream of laugh out loud gags for the entire run time, running the gamut from the juvenile; phallic killer sausage; to intricate character exploration; Kryten's utter ruthlessness behind his veneer of programmed civility and Cats genuinely tragic lack of self. The first time they manage to properly meld their desire to do high concept sci-fi with their proven excellence at character based sit-com. It'll be far from the last.

Glenn Dudley

Great reaction! This is definitely one of my favourite episodes. Thankfully there are plenty more exceptional episodes to come. Perhaps they should do a spin-off about the Rimmer family, a la Osbournes!

Mike Doel

This is the first of better episodes, trust me that get better and better through season 4,5 6 etc, there arr always some which are more average but its great watching the characters grow.. BTW I believe Robert is using a Canadian Accent.

John Veitch

"because he is so mind-meltingly shallow"

DOSGamerMan

His current project is the Fully Charged Show youtube channel. Promoting EV's and renewable energy.

Rob G

The gals are back! Strange detail I love is when Cat is being manipulated. He is so dumb that the polymorph, pretending to be a woman, rolls her eyes at him for being so dumb.

Wade Wallenstein

I knew you would love this one! It's such a fun episode and I love how they set up what Rimmer's childhood was like.

BriefMortal

And after seducing Cat, she went on and stole Melody Pond...

Raven Stromdans

I've had my eye on a "Let's get out there and TWAT IT!" shirt for years now.

Sebastian Bodine

One of the best episodes! Between Backwards preceding Tenet which both had time going in reverse as the big gimmick and Polymorph preceding the game Prey where the enemy can be mundane objects, Red Dwarf is showing how ahead of its time it is!

Jasper de Vries

"Good thing I don't have to survive on stealing intelligence..."

Dr Q Who

...and Fridays 😎

Wilss

I met Chris Barrie (Rimmer) on Sunday. What a legend that man is.

Juzzie

I met Hattie on Sunday. Were you at the Barnsley Comic con?

Dr Q Who

Regarding the pre credit warning message, as it was then 1989 the general UK public were not really used to creature scene like that from a terrestrial television show, particularly one defined as a comedy which came on at the 9pm watershed (where some kids mind you may still be watching).

Wilss

I was indeed!

Eric

Holy hell, I had to IMDB her and you're right!

tal goren

Paula was right, that medical supply gag make no sense when you think about it. especially since the kitchen/bar probably had real dishes Lister could use. This was a fine example of the "rule of funny"

DC

Activist Rimmer is one of my top two moments on this show. "Call it extreme if you like, but I propose we hit it hard and we hit it fast with a major -- and I do mean major -- leaflet campaign!" 🤣🤣 "Chameleonic Life Forms? No Thanks!"

Rob G

It is interesting to think about where certain ideas have been taken from.

Logan Bruin

It's been said that recording had to be paused for 10 minutes until the audience could stop laughing at the shorts scene...

Paul Flux

I have a suspicion that the "unsuitable for younger viewers" warning may have been less about the rubber monster, and more because of the explicit mention of the Committee for the Liberation and Integration of Terrifying Organisms and their Rehabilitation Into Society! TV censorship is weird like that! 😏

Frank Murphy

The moment they finally buy into series 3!

irreverend

Also at the time of airing it was the only Red Dwarf episode which got a 15 rating. I imagine it's 12 these days, but it was 15 on VHS when it first released
