Keep that safe! It's Lister's mind. *Gives it to the Cat*

Paul Baldwin

"Why have I got male sexual organs!"

Raven Stromdans

This is a fun, very silly episode...but definitely hits very different on a rewatch in this era. It does have some very funny elements (Cat dropping Lister's brain in his coffee, Rimmer's joke-amputation towards the end), but the impetus being so aggressively fat phobic and toxic "health" conscious was *a lot*. I believe the Making Of for this series does address the production team's efforts to make the swap effect work for this episode, so it'll be interesting to see what you make of that. Really enjoying the journey and getting to experience this show through fresh eyes with you two. As always...Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Gals!

Jasper de Vries

Apparently Chris Barrie used his impressionist talent to mimic Craig Charles' voice when they were swapped. To say that Craig was not amused was an understatement. While this is not the best episode by far and the ethical implications are frightening, I do applaud Rob and Doug for taking an out there idea like this and really going for it.

Aidan Lunn

When shooting this one, Craig and Chris each had to repeatedly watch footage of the other saying their lines so they could practice getting the timing *exactly* right. Ditto Danny for the Cat/Rimmer swap at the end.

Bruce Bromley

With all the dubbing this is the first episode they filmed without an audience, They later showed it to one to get the reactions. Chris Barrie does Lister's body language and mannerisms spot on.

Mike Connaghan

If stealing others' bodies so I can abuse and endanger them is wrong, I don't want to be right.

I always feel like this was a great concept that was poorly executed. Okay it was well executed on the technical side but the story, not so much. The comments about Lister's weight were a bit much. The thing is that Rimmer has made comments about Lister's weight as far back as series 1, when Lister's weight is absolutely fine. I suppose it was the early 90s, it was a different time.

Mark Ten

The look on your faces when Cat dropped Lister's brain recording in the coffee...

Darryl Glynn

You cannot reduce it to 1 episode per week, under Space Corp Directive 34124!

I think the choice to start the episode with Rimmer, hyper-focussed and competent, trying to repair the fault with the self-destruct, was very much intentional. Death is the best thing to ever happen to Rimmer. He's free of the rank structure and merciless exam system that relentlessly held him back. He's free from a society he couldn't fit into. He is forced to depend on others for help due to being insubstantial, and forced to spend time with people he would have never chose to be with. Its making him, very slowly, into a better person. I even believe he was honest in his intention to help Lister via the bodyswap. But give him life, and he reverts to the utter arsehole he always was. The sensory overload literally induced insanity. There's probably a really good reason that holograms don't routinely bodyswap themselves with the living, the shock of being restored to full life and sensation after existing as a crude computer simulation, would drive anyone mad. They don't have the time in each short episode to explore these themes in full, but its food for thought. Outside of the sitcom trappings, Rimmer should have been permanently deactivated after this debacle. Stealing bodies without consent, can't imagine the actual horror of such a crime. Great reaction by the way!

No officer with false teeth should attempt oral sex in zero gravity? Are you sure? I think Space Corp Directive 196156 is better suited.

I'll be sad when Dwarf drops down to one episode a week, for purely selfish reasons; it's the reason I found you gals and other than Who (which content I'm slowly working my way through and am currently loving Series 6) I'm not really much of a fan of the other stuff you look to have covered. But obviously it's what's best for the channel and you have to (and want to) get back to catering to your original viewers. I'll definitely continue to be a patron, and look forward to what comes down the pike. Hopefully your fun with Dwarf means we'll get more classic Brit stuff, like the oft mentioned Blackadder and Blake's 7, or one of a multitude of other candidates

John Veitch

For some reason his facial acting comes across more Glaswegian to me. :-)

Rob G

Its really horrible when past comedy gets attacked as 'fat phobia' or even 'trans phobia' These are comedy writers, any true comedian by definition has to make the viewer laugh, and to make them laugh they have make fun of everyone. Even us, Im a nerd and found it funny when the film Revenge Of The Nerds made a mockery of me. Was that film Nerdphobic? No ofc not. The jokes in this episode were jokes, there was no fatphobia it was just jokes, a concept dying day by day it seems.

Raven Stromdans

I don't know that the aroma of bicycle seats really get to the heart of the issue. I think Space Corp Directive 68250 is more appropriate.

Time Lord

We'll have to agree to disagree on this take and I don't feel like going back and forth about the semantics of it either. I feel there are much better ways of cracking jokes then going after how somebody looks. ** Last addition, if you've paid attention, Paula and I have absolutely criticized in previous episodes when they've cracked jokes punching down about physical appearances - Kat

Rob G

Thats ok but as you have seen to this point the writers have gone after everyones looks no matter who they are. So?

Rob G

Its like one curry per week, this is madness!

Rob G

Its ok I remember when Polymorph was going to happen followed by Body Swap. I said to the gals they would enjoy polymorph but not really enjoy Body Swap when it came. And I was right, they did a fat phobia thing. It is what it is.

Paflad

On the one hand I can make allowances, up to a point, for the general attitudes of the time when I judge humour, and the audience reaction to this tells you that they did indeed find those jokes funny. And certainly the performances can't be faulted. On the other hand, it's 2023 and if we haven't evolved as a species to understand that punching down is cheap and maybe we should try to be a little cleverer in our jokes, then we're doing something wrong. We all praised the writers for how much they got right with their sexual and gender politics a few episodes back, so it's only fair that they get a little constructive criticism when it's warranted.

Bill

Big thanks for still doing the count-in :)

Blower

The way I see it, people of the 80's & 90's just had a thicker skin than the folks nowadays....they can take a joke in context and see the humour without relating it to themselves, and even if it did on occasion hit home they'd still laugh as it was all just seen as joshing and not a direct insult with intent to any particular individual. In addition it is very common place in British humour to make fun of each other - on the outside, to ya folks across the pond it can be seen as nasty and harsh...however it's just the way our humour is :)

Data Cable

I could not remember seeing this one before, up until the line "Urine should only be green if you're Mr. Spock." I used that as a tagline waaaay back in my FidoNet days, so I mush have seen this at least once, but for some reason the vast majority of it just didn't stick in the noggin.

Sebastian Bodine

I love the first part so much. Every now and then after I or someone else make an avoidable error, I always hear Cat's voice saying "That was very dumb thing you just did there" in the back of my mind! The White Midget was what Starbug was intended to be until they saw that white just didn't look right and didn't work for the Marooned episode. They then changed to green and someone thought it looked bug-like and then here we are! Sad to hear that Red Dwarf reactions will go back to once a week! I'll probably return to being a YouTube viewer once that's in place.

Josef Schiltz

Looking at this one within the context of being a relative newbie to Red Dwarf, I'm not fond of this one. especially after building up some sympathy with Rimmer, then having him as a total dickhead in this. The model work is nearer to a standard that was set with Brian Johnson and Space 1999 - I still prefer Brian and his team's knack of realizing their space scenes. Again, maybe they had more funds to play around with. it is, after all, reputed to be the costliest science fiction series in the history of television, back in the 70s having a budget of $270,000 per episode. It would be great if the Gals would have a look, at least, at the first episode. - Hopefully, if so, bearing in mind what was supposed the look and tech we might have 2.5 decades into the future, with moonbases and all and the future fashions and uniforms. Us oldies would have to grit our teeth and . . . smile! . . . at the reactions. ❤️

Dr Q Who

During each S3 episode openings one of the clip shown is actually from S2's Thanks for the Memory.

tal goren

Slowly working your way through and already in series 6? have you started from series 1? when they started this Patreon they were already in series 5, but there are links somewhere for their FAN THEORY TV reactions of the first 4 series.

tal goren

Just how many Starbugs did they have? that was the third one they crushed this season.

Travis Boyle

Great video. Not one of my favorite episodes but seemed more enjoyable seeing someone watch it for the first time. While I'll be a bit sad with one Red Dwarf a week I will be glad to see the rest of the Star Trek TNG reactions. Especially the movies. Maybe do Lower Decks or Picard for the Star Trek content. Strange New Worlds has been quite enjoyable as well.

Paflad

I'm from England, and I grew up in the '80s and '90s. I'm well aware of what was acceptable back then because I bore the brunt of a lot of it ( not fat shaming, because I was a skinny runt, but other equally unpleasant 'jokes') and I can tell you that we didn't all have thick skins, so much as we pretended to because society said we had to. And I still think being cleverer in our humour is a good idea. If not for reasons of simple empathy, treat it as a creative challenge of nothing else. But I don't wanna derail this comment section so I'll leave it at that

Jasper de Vries

With fake Lister Mike Agnew to boot - pun not intended.

Paflad

I watched the RTD era YouTube edits from fan theory in about 3 days but I figured I should pace myself a little once I moved to patreon for the full length episodes. Gotta allow *some* time for real life stuff, mores the pity

Katrine Myra

As a fat person, the idea that Lister is considered fat, even for comedic purposes, is a bit silly, and worth mentioning. I don't know about you, but commentary on the context of a show is part of why I watch reactions. Not seeing anything attacked here, just put into context.

Katrine Myra

Getting such high quality RD reactions is a dream come true, and this is one Patron who will not unsubscribe even when you run out of episodes or stop reacting, whichever comes first. Just take my money! This episode is one of my favorites, and I love how you dig down into the serious implications of it. How uncanny is Chris's take on Craig's body language?? Can't wait for more.

Josef Schiltz

I don't believe that they'll get to the Space 1999 Eagle crash count!

tal goren

I did the same thing before starting series 5, but ever since they got permission to share their early full reactions, I have been catching up. I am currently in a series 4. The Gals are much more fun unedited.

Kieran B

Completely, that’s how I see it too

Rob G

Thanks for the feedback. However things won’t get any better in terms of your sensibilities going forward regarding jokes in Red Dwarf. /shrug

Frank Murphy

Not one of my faves but not bad either, even not great red dwarf is still pretty good

Haz

Loving your reactions to red dwarf ❣️🙂
