I'll be honest, lost track of the day of the week (been a mentally odd week) so when I got the notification email it was a really nice surprise.

Time Lord

Honestly, when I opened Patreon just now I went through the same thing. Had no idea it was Thursday 🤪 - Kat

Yay, it’s Red Dwarf Day, formerly known as Thursday. In terms of the concept, there’s only Rob and Doug writing it so ultimately they are the only ones who have to suggest and agree to the idea, the system of writing shows is very different over here, very rarely are there large writers’ rooms. They were also producers at this point too. There’s usually only one or two writers and they are also the creators of the show, so if they decide to stop that’s it they stop, there’s no studio system in the same way to keep churning it out beyond its natural life. This is very true with comedy and drama, Bodies that I was in was written by one person (Paul Tomalin, he also wrote the brilliant No Offence).

Jakob1978

Such a fun episode. The guy playing young Lister, is actually Craig Charles’ younger brother. While the tv presenter, who is a pretty well known comedienne in the uk Ruby Wax, is married to the director Ed Bye

Lemmy's Mole

Cracking episode! Sabrina Mulholland J-Jones (Koo Stark) was Prince Andrew's gf for a while (poor girl)..as for the "teens", yes it's a little uncomfortable in 2023 but the legal age of consent in the UK is 16 & you legally become an adult at 18.. I don't think it was implied they were any younger than legally allowed...not condoning, just giving a little context for the time it was originally shown.

Jasper de Vries

Craig Charles wrote the musical piece Kryten was dancing to while developing the photos as well as the "He's got Cash"-song playing when Rich Lister was arriving. Shout out to the late Robert Addie who did a great job playing Gilbert. Poor guy.

Jacob Shepley

The conga line was of women with Kryten. And Kryten did say he was developing pictures from his time on the Nova 5. The ship he was on when Lister and crew pick him up.

Mark Ten

Of course that was before Kryten crashed the space bike and was rebuilt with a different head, face & personality... but never let continuity get in the way of a good on screen joke!

Jacob Shepley

Lol yep. Connie who? 😂 just Kat asks who they were so I answered what was explained in the episode :)

Josef Schiltz

Walking about in and out of photographs has been covered before in a story in another British fantasy series. A very spooky fantasy series from the early 80s produced by ATV. It's just possible that is what triggered off the idea for this episode of Red Dwarf. It's a series which has, to my knowledge, only been reacted to once in it's entirety by Medusa Cascade.

Aidan Lunn

The news reporter was American comedian Ruby Wax, who made a name for herself in the UK for portraying this character of the embarrassing obnoxious American abroad. Every bad American stereotype rolled into one and exaggerated. You would both *LOVE* her! 😂😂 https://youtu.be/HxLEaSlcV5Q?si=cBk9-7J8_vUzUGnY

This really cheered me up today (I have covid and just threw my back out so I needed cheering up!). I love this episode and always loved the concept even if it’s bonkers. Some fun facts – young Lister is played by Craig Charles’ younger brother Emile. Craig’s band at the time also provided some of the music for this episode, most notably “Cash” (and it’s Craig you can hear singing). Sabrina Mulholland-Jjones is played by Koo Stark (who was once romantically involved with Prince Andrew – yes, that Prince Andrew).

Jasper de Vries

And if being with Randy Andy wasn't enough, her scenes in a little-seen movie called Star Wars were left on the cutting floor.

Kieran B

She’s also the wife of director Ed Bye

Raven Stromdans

I recognized him as Mordred from Excalibur a few years ago during a rewatch of the series. It's wild the places you will unexpectedly find British actors popping up. Nicol Williamson who played Merlin in Excalibur showing up in 1997's "Spawn" of all places. (yes, this is a thing that fascinates me as a life long watcher of entertainment of British extraction thanks to PBS)

Josef Schiltz

I thought I recognized Robert Addie from somewhere. Sir Guy of Gisbourne in Robin of Sherwood.

MCT

And "The Heads" are played by Bill Steer and Jeff Walker of the death metal band Carcass, who were apparently mates of Rob and Doug.

Stuart Lee

I love that iam reliving this with you guys and iam so happy your enjoying it there is so much more to come.

Kieran B

He was indeed, need to watch that again

Whether it's tomorrow or next week (whenever RD goes to one per week) I'm looking forward to seeing ep6 as it's one of my favourites from s3. As other commenters have mentioned Timeslides has so many fun bits of trivia relating to the guest stars with comedians, family members, musicians etc.

Glenn Dudley

Episode 6 is another absolute gem. In fact it's not too much of an exaggeration to say that all Red Dwarf episodes from here on in are just comedy gold.

Mab7373822

In the VHS release of Series 3, Timeslides actually comes BEFORE Bodyswap, which I felt made more sense narratively. Rimmer going insane and stealing living bodies makes more sense if he was literally given a body in the previous episode and actually blew himself up. Lister's low mood could be explained by his life being threatened by the Polymorph, causing him to rethink and resent his actual life. Still, you are watching it in broadcast order, which I think is definitely the way to go. Character development - I'm assuming Rimmer was reset based on his behaviour in Bodyswap, as at the beginning of this episode he is genuinely empathetic to Lister, giving him time to talk. Cat is also fully domesticated now, and is making constant suggestions for activities he and Lister could do to cheer him. We get a rare moment of seeing Kryten in private, dancing away happily, not having to be subservient. Holly is also quick on the mark as to what is happening with the timelines. I know its a comedy, but week on week these characters become closer, better and more competent people. One last thing. If we go with broadcast order, then Rimmer's second death shown here is absolutely karmic retribution for his crimes last episode. He stole bodies, and his is returned by some temporal miracle, only to be stolen from him again. Completely what he deserves. Next week's episode is lovely, by the way.

Nolan

So if Rimmer only just now became a hologram, then it's likely the last episode never actually happened. The only reason Rimmer was so desperate to exist in Lister's body was that he didn't have one. But at the end of this episode, he would've had a body in that timeline. So no reason to get so obsessed over food and whatnot. Might also explain why Lister's dreds were back - timeline flux.

Dr Q Who

In the opening credit scenes the part where you see Kryten and the Cat laughing was from Bodyswap, just after Rimmer (in Lister's body) fell to the ground laughing about his prank on loosing Lister's arm.

Dr Q Who

Lister's hair growing back may not necessarily be a continuity error as for all we know it could've been months at least since the events of Bodyswap.

Rob G

This episode is great sci fi wise regarding the photo time slide stuff but it also expands on the relationship between Rimmer and Lister. At the beginning Lister is hating his life, he hates everyone around him. Kryten discovers a time slide where Lister sees a younger self, his younger self is anti capitalism, hates cash, hates crypto fascism (dunno what that means) But for some reason Lister chose to become rich, splashing money around as if he were happy. Rimmer, realising the only 'friends' he has ever had must rescue Lister and bring him back to reality. And when he does, they just walk off as nothing happened. He becomes human and explodes. Poor Rimmer.

Brodie Vickers

Lister: What about the OM song, that was a classic! OMMMMMMMM! Rimmer: People who listened to that formed self-help groups. This episode is one of my favourites so I'm glad you really enjoyed it, especially after last week. The show was good before, but for what come's next.. I think this episode is where it really hits it's stride.

Skyrous

Fun facts about this one. Young Lister was played by Craig Charles little brother. And young Rimmer wore boxing gloves to bed so he could fight off any of the other kids that tried to mess with him when he was asleep.

Chris Neumann

The nickname "Bonehead" was also mentioned back in Kryten.

Chris Neumann

Don't you just love how analog and early 90s the world of Red Dwarf is? Like, they're on a spaceship but they develop film photographs in a lab, they watch videotapes and listen to walkmans as if there haven't been centuries of progress. And when we see Earth, it's literally just the present. No future cars, no robot butlers, etc. Contrasted to the "future"ish look of, say, Better Than Life.

Sebastian Bodine

Paula laughed the hardest at a cannibalism joke. Should we be worried?

Firefly24601

You'll see it tomorrow. RD probably won't go to one episode per week until the SAG-AFTRA strike ends.

MCT

Oh yeah, of course. I hadn't heard news about the strike since last week. Fingers crossed a favourable agreement can be reached soon.

Travis Boyle

Really liked this episode. The part with young Lister was probably my favorite part. "Stop saying it's so crypto fascist. You make us sound like a git." And him saying about Rimmer. "What a nice guy." I used to use this episodes altered timelines as an excuse for the continuity changes in Marooned. Probably doesn't make sense but whatever. Lol.

Travis Boyle

Crypto fascism sounds even weirder now that crypto currency is a thing.

paul

I actually really appreciate that they don't get too hung up on continuity, I don't think they're being lazy with the continuity, I just think they put comedy first and also they want to explore as many ideas as possible. Just think of all the topics they've covered in the episodes up to this point. I think worrying about continuity would have hindered the show and we might not still be getting a kick out of it 30 yeras later.

Wade Wallenstein

Knew you would love this episode! It's such a fun idea with excellent execution.

David Shadwell

I think the presenter was originally going to be Graham Chapman (of Monty Python) but he sadly passed away before filming. Ruby stepped in at the last minute.

David Shadwell

I'm not sure it is ever mentioned who the women are but it was probably either crew (like Mike Agnew and Donna DiStefano had appeared as extras before) or cast in wigs to save paying anyone else to appear for such a small role.

David Shadwell

Hopefully also get the 'Making of...' as well as it is very good and informative. Especially poor old Mike Agnew getting stressed to the eyeballs with Craig and Danny's antics.

John Veitch

I grew up with the VHS release and so I always think of "Timeslides" as coming before "Bodyswap". When they wrote and filmed the episodes I don't think they knew what order they were going to go out in.

John Veitch

One fan theory (I don't know if it's been endorsed by the writers) is that the reason Rimmer is alive at the end is because, with the timeline being changed so Rimmer remembers being visited by his future self as a kid, by the time of "Stasis Leak" he took the visit from his future self more seriously and decided to take his advice instead of dismissing him as a freaky-fungus-induced hallucination.

Jasper de Vries

The laddishness of the nudist beach remark may not have aged well, but the social mores in the UK at least left room for those girls to be above the age of consent (just bringing that up as context for how the joke was supposed to land in its time, not as a judgment on the age of consent at the time). However, the photograph of a group of sleeping eight-year olds at night does not even have that flimsy excuse. That is dark, pun not intended.

Firefly24601

Due to be released today at 10AM PDT

Paflad

One of the most popular national tabloid newspapers in the UK ( now thankfully less popular, but still around) regularly had completely legal topless photos of 16 year old models in it which were a considerable point of pride; and source of sales;for them. In case you were wondering why the teenagers on a beach line wasn't considered beyond the pale. Morally dodgy of course, and we can wave our fingers at it, but to this day the age of consent in Britain is 16 so... On a slightly less icky note, Paula's reaction to the cannibalism joke may be my favourite moment from this series of reactions so far. That one really got her lol How did I find myself writing a comment where I'm describing cannibalism as the less icky option...?

tal goren

Rimmer coming back to life at the end of the episode has some pretty interesting spiritual implications: From a theological point of view, a holographic simulation of person shouldn't actually BE him since his soul has already move on. From a scientific point of view, the simulation could theoretically exist at the same time as the living person, so they are different entities. From both those points of view, living Rimmer shouldn't have been aware that anything changed since he isn't the person who went back in time and changed it. the fact that he is, suggest that souls are real and that Rimmer's hasn't move on and is actually possessing his hologram.

Rob G

As far as I know there was only one topless model that was 16 which the Sun published, It was not a common thing. Her name was Sam Fox who appeared completely well developed even if that is a crass thing to say. Once the public learned of her age, which the Sun actually boasted about they got huge backlash and things changed after that. Sam Fox, even after that, continued to get her boobs out for money. Strange world.

Rob G

Oh I omitted to say the law at the time was 18, so its no wonder the Sun screwed up. British tabloids at the time were absolute scum tbh.

Firefly24601

Never knew about her backstory. I only know her from that one single that charted in the US in the 80s.

John Veitch

In Rimmer's very very mild defence, "teenage" could technically mean 18 or 19... but that fact about the age of consent is probably important to remember when it comes to an infamous sometimes-cut line from a S6 episode.

Frank Murphy

Just realised it must have been the lasses of the nova 5 in the kyten photo. The things you notice on the like 10th viewing of something lol
