Okay, excited for series IV, of course, but FLOOF. :D

Mark Ten

Cant wait for Series 10 & 11. Thats when it really gets... aww, forget it

How would my dream person personify? A young lady that I was at college with. An incredibly talented and beautiful fellow artist. Damn it! Another heart broken story.

Bruce Bromley

Hello to Chopper! Thankfully he only bites clothes and not cheeks. A fun fact to this episode, the female mechanoid is played by Robert Llewellyn's wife, Judy Pascoe. BTW, your pronunciation of his name is the way I've always heard it.

Josef Schiltz

Yes, well, there were infants' programmes on the BBC called Play School and Play Away. Paula certainly looks the part! "And now we will see kittens through . . . the round window!" Everybody in the UK over-50's memories are zooming back in time to the 60s and 70s!

I love series 4, but I'd say that series 5 is peak Dwarf. It kind of dips between 7 and 9 (though I still really like 9) and then it bounces back in 10. Camile in Droid form was played by Robert Llewellyn's wife, and Camile as Lister's dream girl was played by Craig Charles' girlfriend at the time.

Jasper de Vries

Robert Llewellyn has a great story about being able to tell his partner (now wife) Judy Pascoe how much of a hassle the prosthetic makeup was. Then she guested in this episode as the droid Camille and joked that it was not that bad and he had been exaggerating.

Mark Ten

You prob know by now this story was also done on OG Star Trek... except it skipped Android meets Android... Anyway, Camille was supposed to be the 3rd episode but was moved up so it could be broadcast on Valentine's Day. Ah, love is in the air... or was that the fog machine?

paul

Thanks muchly! 😉

Thursday continues to be my favorite day of the week. I'm curiously proud that my first musical thought after "Do you remember" was the same as Paula's. This is a weird episode, which sort of establishes how loose the continuity for the show is, considering Kryten explicitly LIED to defeat the Hudson bot...or at least said something that he interpreted as a lie. Now, I *think* the premise was supposed to originally be that androids can't lie to humans, but I feel as though that doesn't pass muster because then lying to Camille for her own good wouldn't have contributed to him breaking his programming. But, that pedantry on my part aside, it was a fun episode all told. Cat's interaction with Camille is a particular highlight and I can't help but wonder if he ever actually got around to telling Lister who he saw. Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Gals! And congratulations on a tentative end to the strike! I guess we'll be seeing Red Dwarf only once a week from here on out, but that just makes Thursday's all the sweeter!

This episode has always fallen a little flat for meat the end because, and please don't lynch me, I've never seen Casablanca so I don't get a nostalgia hit from it, so much as a "oh god, something else is referencing that bloody movie, how good can it actually be?" reaction. Which I can't help thinking probably dampens the desired mood. Given what's posted immediately after this, I'm assuming that we'll probably be down to one episode a week from now on which, while it sucks for me personally is probably good for the channel so I'm all for it and my patronage won't be stopping. I may have come here for the boys from the dwarf, but Im staying for the gals (and, if I'm honest, their cute as sh*t cats)

John Veitch

Kryten also lies "to be noble" in The Last Day, when he pretends to be convinced by the Marilyn Monroe droid. He also makes the "deadpan mode" joke about Lister having to die with him, which might not be classified as a lie, but it is to the same extent as misidentifying a fruit when everyone in the room knows what it really is.

John Veitch

I think we were meant to suspect Camille was dangerous. Remember the Polymorph last series.

Bruce Bromley

Perhaps you should watch the definitive Casablanca with Myra Binglebat and Peter Beardsley.

Rob G

Great reaction again thanks Gals! I think some of the reason people say X series is when it really gets good is because we have really got to know the characters by then, So when they do something special with a character like Rimmer its real icing on the cake. Dimension Jump is a prime example of this. Also after Kryten coming back and becoming a huge fav of fans really adds to that. So what happens when people look back on all the series they kinda psychologically grade all the episodes and give an unintentional impression that the earlier series were not that good, but that is not what they are intending to say because we all know Red Dwarf was great from day one. :)

John Veitch

During a "Red Dwarf Night" TV special, one fan made the foolish mistake of saying that Data was based on Kryten, having not checked before going up on camera that Data actually was created first. This has become a running joke on the Red Dwarf fansite and podcast "Ganymede and Titan".

Jim Gooch

Spin my nipple nuts! (one of the most memorable episodes) And Yes, your first reaction going in blind was priceless!

BazT47

I came here to post that lol. SMEEE HEEEE LOL

Paul Flux

Can we have a situation update? Was it Luna? Or is Paula's place haunted? 🤔

Time Lord

I haven't heard from Paula in... Awhile. I think it's haunted cats if we're being honest! - Kat

Rob G

I think the Sandman finally came for Paula, all that yawning and stuff. (giggle)

Paul Flux

The Sandman? There's another show the Gals should react to.... 😉

DOSGamerMan

reddit's OneOrangeBraincell subreddit is pretty fun too. Oh, and Krytons Gelf was played by his actual wife.

Darryl Glynn

A couple of crazy cat ladies reacting to Red Dwarf.. what's not to like?

AlyAdmirer

*sees the thumbnail with Kat & cat* "... how fitting." :-)

Chris Neumann

You could also view it as him not being 100% sure that Silicon Heaven is real, just a tiny doubt means it's not technically a lie.

Rob G

I think you might be my Camille Sue, oh no you are a big green blob run awaaaaay.

AlyAdmirer

Now having watched the reaction... this was the first episode of RED DWARF I ever *saw*, though it wasn't my first exposure to the series. My oldest brother had moved to Ft. Worth in late 1991, and since I'd just gotten my first VCR, KERA was carrying DOCTOR WHO, and no channel where we lived had carried the show since 1983, he was going to... well, initially, just *audio* tape episodes for me, but eventually he had an opportunity to make a VHS tape to ship me. That tape had three serials from Season 16, but it also ended up having an episode of PYTHON (with the Cheese Shop sketch) and this episode of RED DWARF... ... but before he could ship me this tape, he mailed me a roughly three-quarters complete audio recording of the last episode of Series IV, which became my introduction to the Boys from the Dwarf. That episode has a rather weak reputation in the fandom, but I gotta say, I fell in love with the show almost instantly... but I won't say anything more about that one until we get there. :-) So when this episode arrived in the mail, it allowed me to put visuals to the voices and settings. And cemented my love of the show. I honestly think "Camille" is one of the weaker episodes of this Series, but that's just an indication of how good I think what follows is. Really pleased that both of you loved it. :-)

Rob G

Ok, had a drinky or two as usual, have to ask the question... I really want to know why Paula is constantly tired while Kat is literally wide eyed when watching these episodes. Are you ok Paula? Kat is full on engaged moment to moment but Paula is a little bit in and out tbh. Hashtag Free Paula.

Mike Connaghan

Life is like an episode of Red Dwarf: You never know what you're gonna get. Also your love interest may be a giant blob.

Sebastian Bodine

A classic episode! If you enjoyed the chemistry between the different versions of Camille and the Dwarf crew, that's because that's Robert Llewellyn's wife as the main Camille, Craig Charles' girlfriend at the time, and Chris Barrie is just always natural as Rimmer. Fun fact: Danny John-Jules double exposure effect was so well performed that the lead producer (if I recall correctly) was flabbergasted.

Josef Schiltz

The GELF in this episode remind me of the Suffuss in the Valerian: Spatiotemporal Agent French graphic novel 'The Ambassador of the Shadows' by JC Mezieres and Pierre Christin. The recent film 'Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets was based on their long-running comic strip and graphic novel series which ran from 1967 to 2019. Valerian and Laureline's adventures ran in their American English translation in Heavy Metal Magazine and then were printed in slim graphic novel format. in this story, the Suffuss' true form were as a chameleoid blob. Laureline: "So, this is what the Suffuss really are! As seducers." Suffuss: "I beg your pardon. Tastes and colours. You know . . . . . Besides, we can assume any form we want. That is the secret of our success. Unsatisfied clients are rare. Very rare." Laureline: "I didn't say I wasn't satisfied. You can even make me very happy." Valerian Spatiotemperal Agent: 'The Ambassador of the Shadows': English language text: 1983, from the French: 1969.

This one was somehow even better than I remembered and I remembered it being great. It feels like a follow up to Parallel Universe with everyone (except poor Holly) getting a love interest. Cat does rather better this time around though. The split screen high five Danny John Jules gives himself is still so epic! And the corridor scene afterwards where they basically just do four variations of the same joke in a row ending in, "someone get me a brandy!" Love it! 🤣

Salix

Yeah red dwarf. Also yay kitten 😻....that is all. 😅

BriefMortal

It's the Bolivian navy on manoeuvres in the South Pacific! 😂 It's too good 🤣

Character development- Cat loves Lister and Kryten. His genuine encouragement during the "What's My Fruit" game is heartwarming, the are part of his family now. Lister has adopted Kryten and is determined to make him into a fuller person. Its interesting that Lister - characterised by slobbiness, laziness and not wanting to be tied down to any responsibility - is so passionate about Kryten reaching his potential. He can't see the need for this in himself though. His flirtations as a doctor might have been a bit too much, but I think he knew he wasn't being taken seriously. Rimmer is a bit of an arsehole in the first half of this one, snide to Lister, bullying towards Kryten, and just rude. It makes you wonder about what happens off screen considering his genuine friendship and enjoyment shown in The Last Day. However, when the truth of the situation is revealed, he is quietly happy for Kryten to pursue his romance, and doesn't seem to spread his bitterness too far. Holly doesn't get much to do here. I always felt "my screen was foggy" was a lie by her, keeping what she truly saw to herself. Kryten emerges from this episode triumphant. He disobeys Rimmer, insults Lister, feels feelings and sacrifices them for love. He might be a bit too quick with the love-at-first-sight trope, but this is covered later by Camille who says that he isn't used to these types of feelings. He's becoming such a well-rounded character .

what I want to know is where exactly did the blobs go? is there a human civilization somewhere that they are a part of? if so then why didn't the crew join them? and if they are all on their own then why didn't they just stayed in red dwarf? true clues to the current state of humanity is not something the crew encounter often and yet they completely failed to investigate the matter.

Wade Wallenstein

They did an excellent job with this story! There may not be much continuity but there is a lot of character growth.

paul

Some interesting insights there! I felt like the "my screen was foggy" bit screamed, "we just couldn't be bothered to write a Camille for Holly", or more generously, they didn't have time. To be fair, when Holly had a love interest in Parallel Universe, the cast was 4 people not 5.

Wagoo

I like to think the love story between the two mechanoids worked out in the end, in a parallel universe, as Rob ended up marrying Judy Pascoe who played Mechanoid-Camille

The Cat's perfect mate joke is SO GOOD, and why character comedy never ages. Once you get great comedy characters with great actors, just keep on introducing wild new concepts for them to react to and watch the magic happen. It writes itself!
