Will Steven Universe be moving to a different time/day since Red Dwarf has been in this spot?

Susan K Dailey Photography

I love this episode. I don't know how Craig got through that scene with the double polaroid...cos not only was that scene hilarious, but apparently those polaroids were actually dick pics and they didn't tell him that in advance!! Also, Craig wasn't even doing stand-up before Red Dwarf. From what I know he was only doing poetry and a bit of presenting. He was mainly known as 'that angry poet' on TV which is why the creators didn't want to let Craig audition originally - they didn't think he could be funny! Danny I think had done literally one acting role on stage and everything else had been dancing. Robert had done stand up and some musical comedy. Chris had only had a couple of acting roles before the show - single episodes of The Young Ones and Blackadder, I think. He was best known for doing impressions on Spitting Image. I think the entire cast are so so talented, and it's telling that all of them are well-known for multiple projects in the UK: Chris has Spitting Image and the Brittas Empire (and also the Lara Croft movies); Craig has Robot Wars, a full decade on Coronation Street, Takeshi's Castle and is better known as a radio DJ these days; Danny has MI High, Maid Marian and her Merry Men, and a favourite of mines, Death in Paradise; while Robert has Scrapheap Challenge, Carpool, and Fully Charged. Also, there is a Red Dwarf prequel in the works, though I kind of have mixed feelings about it...I'm still going to check it out if/when it gets commissioned.

Erm. Yes. Paula. We were apprised of what DNA is in the 90s! Deoxyribonucleic acid - Interestingly, the spellcheck apparently isn't in 2023! Kryten: "Checking spellbot! Deoxyribonucleic spelling correct! HUH HUH! Well, YAHBOOH Google! SMMMEeee EEeeEd!"

Raven Stromdans

YAY! An unexpected second episode! The conversation in the Med Bay of this episode is just pure, classic Red Dwarf. This is one of those episodes that just hits all the right notes to make for some of the funniest television ever. I love how much fun you two got out of it. Still one more episode I'm really looking forward to this season, but I love watching along with you for all of them. Until next week, Stay Calm and Smeg On Gallifrey Gals!

Rowan Talmage

I've been craving a curry around Thursday/Friday every week since you started doing Red Dwarf reactions. Even the curry monster won't stop me from wanting one.

Bruce Bromley

Well, Shepard seems to be tired of Red Dwarf. It's taking all the attention away from him. I'm loving how much you're both enjoying Robert Llewellyn and his Kryten. Speaking of continuity, I don't remember many sitcoms in the 70's through the 90's having it. The biggest offender I can recall was MASH.

Firefly24601

That has yet to be determined.

Paflad

Of all the episodes to ask us what our favourite joke is they pick what may be, nay definitely is, the most relentless onslaught of hilarity in the shows history to this point, and maybe ever. That said, Lister's wordless lean to look at Kryten's ass will never not break me.

Daniel Stimson

They changed the continuity in the episode. Lister tells a story of how he was feeling down after he broke up with Kochanski, but in earlier series he'd never dated her. The back story is now based on the first 2 Red Dwarf novels which came out around this time.

Nolan

This was supposed to be the last episode of series four, but some world events made the BBC push a couple episodes back and bring a couple forward. This ended up scuppering the plan to get Llwellyn out of the robot suit permanently so his make-up process wasn't so harsh. Alas for him, it didn't happen.

Jasper de Vries

You are asking us whether we are enjoying ourselves while you present yourselves as a double polaroid? I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere, but it eludes me for now.

Brodie Vickers

The Last Chicken in the Shop. Over the last few years, that is the name that I've chosen to adopt for the lil fella😄

Mike Connaghan

I can't believe you gals don't keep your dandruff in long-term storage.

DOSGamerMan

So good to experience the first time watching this episode again vicariously through Paula and Kat.

Mike Doel

Your absolutly right with all you say, the writing is also spot on, this is the level Red dwarf stays at through out the seasons. There is soooo much for you to laugh at :). There are better and worse episodes , but you have happy times ahead

Darryl Glynn

OMG, you gals had those shirts on yesterday. You've been watching too much Dave Lister. EEWW!!!

Glenn Dudley

One episode a week, how will I cope? I'm wishing my life away!

Rob G

Sue your geekdom is something else. One point of error is that Lister didn’t see an actual dick pic, the make up department slash props made a mock up of a willy for Craig to see.

Susan K Dailey Photography

I'd heard that was the original plan but they were switched out for something more 'authentic' on the night of the live shoot. Correct me if I'm wrong though. Edit - and because I am a total nerd I just checked the Red Dwarf wiki and it corroborates what I thought!

paul

These reactions are so entertaining. The whole polaroid scene is a classic and it was great to see you two howl with laughter at it. I feel like they came up with that scene first and then built the rest of the story around it. Lister's face when he can't help but drop from mature into smirk mode, amazing! 😂

Data Cable

Well, we've found The Gals' optimal humor level: Penis jokes.

Data Cable

Are those two polaroids in your pocket?

Andy

Agreed that Season 4 is where the show really hits its stride. Season 3 is where the change of direction comes, but 4 is where they iron the kinks out.

John Veitch

You have seen at least two of the Starbug shots in the opening titles - they're from series 3. :)

Graham Mills

Rimmer was playing "Cabbage-Head": a member of the cast, who should really know what is being discussed, asking about the subject to allow exposition for the audience. Riker and Picard often play Cabbage-Head in TNG when Geordi or Crusher have just thrown out some technobabble.

Chris Neumann

I never noticed this before, but the "a year ago to the day, how can the same thing happen to the same guy twice?" is a reference to the Die Hard 2 teaser which must have been out at the same time! It even takes place in a similar smoky industrial corridor!

Blower

Your reactions were priceless! - i've been waiting for you to get to this episode as i knew ya be falling off ya chairs with laughter at Krytens Q&A scene lol!!

Wade Wallenstein

I love how you both lost it with Kryten and Lister talking in the Med Bay! That's how you pull off those kind of jokes right.

Blower

Well spotted!....Whole series is littered with 80's & early 90's film & TV references & parodies - Aliens, Robocop, Jaws, Star Trek etc

Mark Ten

Still makes me laugh out loud.

Josef Schiltz

It's amazing really just how much of a cabbage head the Google spellcheck can be! It obviously hates scientific terms. It makes me wonder - because of how limited it can be - who set it's parameters and who for?? I'll try Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch Yup! That threw it as well! Big red line underneath, which means "WTF is this??" Answer; it's WELSH! You stupid smeghead spellcheck! Whaddaya know! It doesn't like smeghead either!

Josef Schiltz

"Neither a borrower nor a lender be; For loan oft loses both itself and friend, And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry." Rimmer should have be reminded of that when he took over Lister's body and misused it! "This above all: to thine ownself be true," as Lister tried to say. You are what you are! Both drawing upon Polonius' advice to his son Laertes as he is about to set sail for foreign shores. "Ukk ukk ukk ukk ukk! Musk be a Goon from Goony Island!"

DavrosXV

I'm pretty sure Jurassic Park (1993) is what brought general awareness of DNA into the mainstream. This episode released in 1991.

paul

Yeah, Kryten's definitely having a bit of Basil Exposition moment when he explains DNA to Rimmer but blatantly he's really talking to the audience. Also, I like how the whole plot of the episode is caused by Cat impulsively and randomly pressing buttons in a very cat like fashion, meanwhile at the exact same time Paula's cat is randomly knocking shit over the way cats do. Weird coincidence! 😆

Dr Q Who

Do you know the original order of all the season four episodes?

Dr Q Who

We need a statis leak every week into the future. lol

Dr Q Who

Danny John Jules was in at least two movies prior to the Dwarf. Two I remember are the 1979 movie prison movie Scum (1979) where he was one of the inmates and Little Shop of Horrors (1986) where he was one of the dancers.

tal goren

the dandruff stuff isn't implausible because they been stuck in the ship for 3 years. it is implausible because Rimmer has been dead for 3 million years. honestly, the weirdest part of the show is that the ship is pretty much the same as the crew left it. Lister and Rimmer shouldn't have any of their old stuff still lying around.

paul

Good catch! You're right, it's got to be an intentional reference!

paul

Yeah and if I recall correctly I think they had to spend ages explaining DNA in that as well! 😊

Character development Kryten went through the robot-wanting-to-be-human trope in record time, and learned that there is nothing superior about the human condition. He emerges proud of being a mechanoid. He no longer serves humans due to some sort of sense of inferiority or guilt, but because he enjoys the domestic role. Cat was surprisingly friendly to Rimmer this episode, complimenting his idea with regard to the curry transmogrification and even helping him with the dandruff hunt. Cat is actually quite affable in the right mood. Poor Rimmer. If he'd just remembered his continuity, he could have got his DNA from his exploded body in Timeslides, and after cloning it, used the Bodyswap technique from that episode to transfer his consciousness. I wonder if his holographic program was tinkered with to erase the Bodyswap (to ensure no more body stealing) and as his holodisc wouldn't recall the exact moment of his death (as it only records at the moment of personality recording), he might have no memory of ever being returned to life. Lister... History has been altered so that he actually had a relationship with Christine Kochanski rather than adoring her from afar. Given the time-travel shenanigans of Stasis Leak and Timeslides, presumably one of these events re-wrote history. However, the outcome is that it paints Dave in a sadder light. He pines after his ex, he invaded her privacy by viewing her dream recorder in previous episodes, and it comes across as a bit more pathetic. After all, she dumped him.

Josef Schiltz

Okay. So, working on this Rimmer's Dandruff Theory. taking a leaf from Doctor Who, Flesh and Stone, there is an oxygen forest of cyborg conifers and Rimmer found some of his dandruff preserved in amber. ( Well, it's no more of a stretch than anything else that has happened so far!) Okay, Kitty School! It's off to see The Great Cat Wizard!

David Shadwell

Shame you aren't doing the reactions to the Making Of docs as you get to see Ed Bye's panic story when filming started for this story and Robert wasn't in his make-up. Must be tiring and confusing being a show runner!

Time Lord

We are! We haven't had time to jump into the ones following series 3 and 4 just yet, but it's on the list! We've watched previous parts to some of them already and they're available on our Geronimo and Red Alert tier!
