This episode is best summed up by my having forgotten it existed. A strange one, indeed. The opening of the reaction makes it all worthwhile. *scratches nose*

This has something I usually can't stand in movies and TV. Long, symbolic dream sequences like in this episode. It feels like one of those late episodes of a show where they try some weird script because it's their last chance.

I didn't realize just how far along these got before the strike! This is a weird one. The next one is an odd choice for the last regular episode to me, but it's actually pretty good. And makes sense to give a little closure to a character.

I, for one, welcome our AI overlords. Humans are idiots.

Alexander Caldwell

Not a favorite; just have a hard time suspending my disbelief that a computer even in the seemingly advanced 24th century could spawn random life. I mean, Star Trek often deals with artificial intelligence run amuck, but are usually due to "ghost in the machine" type scenarios, and not the computer spontaneously reproducing. Just a weird, random, "scraping the bottom of the barrel" kind of storyline that just did not resonate with me.

Alexander Caldwell

If self-actuating A.I. end up destroying us, it will only be because we inadvertently programmed them to do so (i.e., yes, humans are idiots).

Travis Boyle

Laughed a lot at the pre and after the episode conversations. This was a bit of a weird one. Seems like running out of steam episode. At least the last three episodes are awesome. Also thought it was funny when Picard said our fantasies and you both had the same "don't look at my search history" reaction. Lol. Can't wait for Generations and First Contact.

Alexander Caldwell

Another example of human stupidity: designing holographic imaging systems with lethal capacity, where the safety protocols can be shut down by some passing imbecile or due to a random malfunction. Apparently, network/systems segmentation doesn't exist in the 24th century!

Arek Schneyer

It is interesting to me that I, having grown up watching this show, view a lot of episodes with fondness that other people dislike. I think I see them with a kind of child-like wonder, and not caring about the bad parts. Of course, it could also be that I always try to take every piece of art on its own terms, rather than prescribing what it should be.

Henchman Twenty1

Beverly did a paternity test and Geordie gots some splainin' ta do. He took the Dr. Leah Brahms hologram too literal about the ship being her.

Nolan

This is one of the earliest episodes of Star Trek in general I ever saw, if not the first. I was already dabbling in sci-fi, but this episode also touched on my fascination with older culture, old cars, golden age luxury... all wrapped in a bonkers mystery. Suffice to say, it hooked me a lot. This episode I also view as a companion to the earlier season seven episode, "Phantasms," another mind bending machine intelligence with really out there imagery as part of it's psychosis. You guys were ragging on the Conductor and other characters in the Holodeck just letting passengers help out in the engine room, so it seems to took that all a bit too literally. That whole thing was a metaphor. It's like if some of your friends got to hop into your imagination and interact with aspects of your psyche. That Conductor isn't really the train's conductor, it's in fact the Enterprise herself, talking through him. It's almost a shame that Picard never went on the Holodeck and interacted with any of the characters. That could've been a poignant scene. Kinda like the Doctor interacting with the TARDIS in that one episode. Oh well.

Rick and Morty's 'Story Train' episode always reminds me of this one. 😁One more episode of TNG before the great finale. I know it's for the best, but I don't think I'm ready for the Gals to say goodbye to Trek. 😒

Damn me! Paula actually had me in tears with completing the line "Oh brave new world . . . " with . . . That has such people in't." and so onto it. Miranda is my favourite character in all of Shakespeare, Prospero is second. With such automatically instantaneous delivery, I can't help wondering if Paula has ever played Miranda? The first time I ever saw The Tempest was from the BBC in 1979 when their complete Shakespeare was being produced. Michael Hordern was Prospero and Pippa Guard was Miranda. Later she was Diana in the 1980 production of All's Well that Ends Well and Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1981. Difficult for me to believe that Pippa Guard is 71 now! Time travels far too fast!

Josef Schiltz

Humans are anthropochaotic and follow nonsense mind decorations as if they are real, born of 'What-if?' scenarios fantasized within the human brain.

Artemis Zeidman

I love Paula’s shirt. The bright colors and stark pattern are very sensorily stimulating. I liked Picard infodumping to Crusher about the Orient Express.
