The first time I ever flew into Burbank I freaked out when I made the turn to walk out of the airplane and BOOM we were outside. I was expecting the interior of a jetway and instead there was a HUGE drop to the tarmac! Then I noticed the stairs. 😆

Bill

Remember. remember, that day of November... whichever it happened to be.

Bill

There's a trans character in Cyberpunk 2077 that has a whole mission arc with activities. Her trans-ness has zero to do with her entire story arc. It was beautiful. It was just something that was mentioned when she was telling you how she met her late husband.

Bill

One of my favorite internet people is a wheelchair user that still has use of their legs. Because their condition means that their joints might just give out or cause extreme, constant pain, or a number of other things. A wheelchair doesn't mean paralyzed FFS.

Stephen Wray

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned us the phrase you were thinking of

Stephen Wray

There was also something significant that happened in Dallas the day doctor who started.

Firefly24601

If you look on Ruth Madeley's IG, she has pictures where she's in her wheelchair and posing, and some where she's standing and posing. Jessica Kellgren-Fozard is another ambulatory wheelchair user who is all over social media.

The let it go scene was a misstep. There was no logic to it except to establish that Donna & Rose no longer had Time Lord powers and it could have been handled better. Rose finally being able to accept herself for who she truly was should have been a more important moment for the audience, but was a lost opportunity. Those parts of the story felt rushed, like RTD was trying to wrap things up to get to the Tardis reveal.

Mark Ten

Outside of the SciFi story I thought there was a brilliant moment when the Doctor stumbled over the assuming the Meep's pronouns were male and Rose corrected him. The Doctor didnt get angry. He didnt make a joke and wasnt embarrassed. He apologized and went on from there and did better. I also liked the way Sylvia had her moment of doubt about calling Rose beautiful because she didnt for Jason. That was a very human moment for her. Those scenes resonated for me.

As a trans girl in the UK, the deadnaming scene and the convo with sylvia paints a realistic reflection of life in the UK if you are Trans. If they didn't have that, It would just feel they're glosssing over Trans struggles in a way. Which given the BBC's reputation with transphobia, The Trans reality I feel needs to be shown

Scott Martin

Is Doctor Who the right medium to be showcasing trans struggles though? On the one hand it's definitely a good thing to highlight them but I personally feel coming of age drama's, soaps, etc are a more appropriate medium for delving into that type of thing. As Paula concluded why can't Rose just be a good character who happens to be trans?

Mordredd

I enjoyed the special a lot and as a mostly vanilla member of a much older generation I wasn't upset in the slightest with the trans and wheelchair representation happening in front of the nations youth. The sky did not fall down. I did feel the need to check that because half of YouTube spent the entire weekend screaming so much that you'd think the sky was indeed falling down, but the sky is where its always been and I am happy to report that the world has not infact ended ;) I totally agree with Kat about the 'Let it go' line, unnessasary and a bit of a crass clunker. But it was just one duff line and as a male presenting viewer I let it go because of course we can do that Russell, of course we can. With many decades of experience watching Classic Doctor Who I always mentally assign a big red label to every episode saying "Warning: Experimental Prototype". No one gets upset if a prototype has a naff line in it or even if the monster is just a guy wearing bubble wrap painted green (this used to happen a lot, don't laugh). I am still super excited for this Saturdays experimental prototype, will it fly us to the moon and back? or will it blow up in our faces... I cant wait to find out!

BrightHeart

Children and young teens etc, need to understand what trans people go through and experience in a way for them to empathise and understand that what is happening isnt right as well and given Doctor Who's reach its the perfect medium. Children arent the target audience for Soaps etc.

Katrine Myra

Claire! I love her. I'm cis, it's not for me to say, but I feel they did a really good job of just showing a trans person existing in the story.

Katrine Myra

Had a quick look at the comments, and apparently I need to see this episode...! I'm not a big DW fan, and haven't followed the show recetly (not even a fan of 10 - don't hate me) , but this sounds intriguing.

Bill

Honestly, same. My approval as a CIS man doesn't carry any weight. I did love that she was just there though. Trans flag on her truck, and just dealing with her day to day.

Nolan

Lotta your issues with this are the same ones I have with current Star Trek. Not its messaging, but the way it's told. There's a way to tell the audience something in media, a way to take a stand, but not do it in a patronizing, incendiary way that'll close minds rather than open them. There's a lot of preaching to choirs going on. Both in media and in media criticism (I also just have a lot of narrative, characterization, intelligence and lore issues with new Star Trek, but that's less relevant at the moment) All in all, this special felt like the average Davis era episode. Probably not the best showing for a 60th special, and yeah, I'd love if Eccelston would come back, seeing him and Capaldi bouncing off each other would be a treat. It's funny Paula mentions DS9, as ironically, one of its worst episodes has what really is the best case scenario for what the future of Transsexualism should be: an easy day surgery that if so desired is also easily reversible and is common enough that doctors have no qualms about it and no one questions it. It's just unfortunate that episode has the worst representation for females and pretty much every toxic comedy trope about being a woman in it. (And in my experience every opinion on the internet I've *so far* see agrees, "Profit and Lace" is a bad episode) I must admit, part of me is morbidly fascinated by Paula's issues with DS9. Like, I have a number of fairly educated guesses based on things she's said, but I obviously can't say for certain. I almost would be interested in a video like this discussing those issues, but I know the comments would just be reams of explanations "you don't understands" and attempts to get you to like it. No doubt I would even be tempted to post rebuttals. And in addiction to those kinda comments, there'd probably be a decent amount of overly over offended people posting offensive and insulting remarks too. So I can see why you wouldn't. Ahh well, I will just percolate in my curiosity.

Travis Boyle

Overall I enjoyed DS9 a lot but I can understand them not wanting to watch DS9 for 4 years like TNG.

Josef Schiltz

That scene where Rose is being taunted reminds me of something that Professor Tony Attwood said in a talk relating to neurodiversity. " You're trying to relate to toxic teenagers. The most dangerous creature on this planet. Forget Great White Sharks trying to eat surfers. The most dangerous 'creature' is a pack of teenage boys. Neither use nor ornament!" There is an SF novel - not recalling the author because it's a recall over many years, but it may be Ursula Le Guin - where there is a forest planet and the forest dwellers mainly live in the canopy. However, the teenagers are so toxic that they are relegated to the forest floor until they grow up and start being civilized. Only then are they allowed to climb back up and join the adults. Anthropologically speaking, I totally agree, but with a caveat, I would add . . . or adults who haven't managed to grow past the teenage mentality of being a group think bully and continue acting like them. That includes many self-deifying 'leaders' of nations, and their political allies or disciples, who seem unfortunately and sadly numerous.

Josef Schiltz

Exactly. Children and young teens need to understand that an individual's brain is a highly complex instrument and none will play exactly the same tune. Any attempt to cut 'n' paste your own experience, thoughts, feelings will be met with inexactitude at least, usually total failure. Inexactitude is a very valuable word concept, because that describes the body and the reality of the way it functions. If everything was so 'perfect' then we wouldn't need healthcare, surgeons and psychiatrists or counseling. Additionally, add-ons like spectacles or false teeth or wheels or canes to aid our mobility! Perfect accord is an illusory human conceit and outward appearances don't always match up with what goes on inside, especially in the brain. The brain is an extreme energy user for a reason, being far, far more complex than what are merely the exteriorized genitals.

"Nov 25th..." THAT slip is not Kat's fault, I declare that is totally BBC's fault for being to much of a coward about convenience to air the episode on the 23rd just because it wasn't a Saturday, 😉 (jk, personal joke beef I have with the air date)

Josef Schiltz

The date is significant in that the first showing of Doctor Who, with An Unearthly Child, was the day after on November 23rd 1963 and, of course, the media coverage was overtaken by the event of the previous day.

Ben Chan

Was Paula conflating Ronald D Moore and Russell T Davies now that you're starting BSG?
