What a guy 😄😄😄😄

So smoked for this one, I mean stoked. Also I know you have loads of smegs ups and documentaries to react to for this show but I'd also recommend checking out "Red Dwarf theme live by #Filmharmonie" on youtube, just even in your free time. It's only a few minutes long!

Mike Connaghan

I'm here for the crisp, concise intros and outros.

Geraint Harrison

I’m here 50/50/50 for Paula, Kat and the cats! There’s no favouritism around here ladies.

Time Lord

Always crisp. Always concise. Absolutely never chaotic. 👀

Brodie Vickers

Chris Barrie was really starting to dislike playing two losery type character's, Rimmer in Red Dwarf and Gordon Brittas in Brittas Empire. Thus Ace Rimmer was born.

Cedric Bombs

Ah yes, the episode where Rimmer meets literally-himself and his first instinct is to question his sexuality. Repressing anything?

Jasper de Vries

Did you Gals notice that the voice of Ace is quite close to his brother Frank when Lister crashed his wedding in Timeslides?

Raven Stromdans

This is arguably one of the most intriguing Rimmer-centric episodes. The idea that it wasn't "breaks" that Rimmer needed to succeed, but to be challenged in a way that made him strive to be better in spite of himself. This episode and Ace himself has something of a special place in the hearts of Dwarfers, I think - this idea that there are other versions of oneself that did one thing different and it changed their whole lives in comparison to yours, either for benefit or to detriment, is a fascinating topic to ruminate on, to say nothing of how fun it was to see Chris Barre's over the top heroic acting for Ace Rimmer. Keep Calm, Smeg On and Smoke Me a Kipper, I'll be back for the next episode, Gallifrey Gals!

I think this episode shows the immense failed potential of Rimmer and Lister. Rimmer's brothers were all high ranking officers in the Space Corps. Did they have the same moment of realisation that Ace did, the need to 'fight back' against their circumstances? Did they recognise that their parents were fucking insane, abusive, monsters and rebel, while our Rimmer just accepted their mistreatment until he was belittled into a worthless shell? He saw his brother's achievements and learned the wrong lesson, that he should capitulate to his parents rather than defy them and make his own path. He is an insufferable arsehole most of the time, but he is a victim. Lister - the drunk layabout second technician - performing emergency repairs in dangerous conditions - shows that the man has such potential. He rebuilt Kryten back in S3, built the Marylin Monroe droid also in S3, worked out how to take advantage of the Timeslides, took on the Simulant and Curry Monster and won, and figured out Camille. He is a really, really smart man who could have easily been "Spanners". I assume that he and Ace both served on Red Dwarf in their universe and through Ace's sheer charisma and influence, they both ascended up the ranks. Rimmers homophobia is an ugly part of this episode, and one of the ugliest aspects of the character. Lister is so secure in himself he doesn't ever rise to it, which I imagine only incensed Rimmer even more.

Just to add Kat, thanks for sharing your story of how your reprehensible parent took away something you deeply wanted. I had a horrendous and abusive parent who I escaped from when I was much younger, but while I sometimes wonder what my equivalent would be like who had not gone through that abuse, a theme from the episode is that sometimes getting the break that we want, can be worse than not. My life turned out great in the end - and i work in a field that prevents abuse like what i went through - so despite having a bad break, it made me into something positive, or so i like to think. While NY Kat might or might not being doing well from the break she got, it's Gallifrey Kat and Paula that bring hours of joy to their fans through their hilarious, emotionally honest, and thoughtful reactions, and I'd pick that Kat and her dimension anyday.

Josef Schiltz

I can certainly empathize Kat. My aim was to be a book illustrator and a sequential artist like Will Eisner or Dave Gibbons - who drew the original Star Beast strip. My main thing is image and text. I ended up being a carer for an elderly relative for three decades instead and it was just impossible to keep to deadlines. I had to turn down jobs and most became too impractical. Now I'm free of that, I have a tremor which make it difficult and frustrating to try and take it up again. I also suffer from depression and that is a continual struggle. Art was my way out of depression and worked whilst I was doing it. If I do try again then it would have to be something digital, but I loved working with brushes and it's not the same. i trained with traditional materials back in the 70s. It does make me wonder if there is another me somewhere who actually managed a successful career and maybe a totally different and better life. Whenever I see parallel world stuff like this, I think, "Yeah!" I'm still enjoying your Star Trek reaction back catalogue and have just watched The Tholian Web of Star Trek TOS. All those effects have been redone and I have the boxset somewhere, still unpacked in a box from moving. I think it was 1973 when I first saw this. i suspect that I can look up the date on the BBC Genome and find out what Doctor Who was also running. I know it will be Jon Pertwee. Of course, if you've not seen it yet that would be a spoiler alert!

Josef Schiltz

Ace is actually very close to a character in Blackadder 2, played by Rik Mayall, Lord Flashheart

Rob G

The writers of this series are so good they know how to manipulate the audience in a lot of ways, they have both said they were really interested in psychology. And so they create this Rimmer character who is bitter and twisted who we love to hate or hate to love. So in this episode when he does his homophobe stuff it isnt really because he is homophobic, he is just so bitter and angry he cant help making comments on sexuality. From his point of view Ace and Lister became best friends forever and this bugged him, notice how Kryten mentioned his fatuous remarks on the sexuality of Ace. This is why the writing is so good, nobody explicitly has to tell us why Rimmers attitude is wrong, but at the same time we also get to understand Rimmers attitude in the face of meeting the person he could have been.

DOSGamerMan

What? I am here for the boys from the Dwarf.

paul

I still think of this episode whenever I see or hear the word "taramasalata".

EternusNex

I was so looking forward to this one. I wanted to see Kat's face at the end credits... and next week is going to be even better. A couple of points - You have seen the planets crash in White Hole. The ending was Lister playing pool with planets to block the hole and stop the weird timeline. Yes the salute will return. Not saying when but it will, I promise. And I'm looking forward to the reaction of the making of for this episode. It brings up a discussion that I wonder either of you have even considered.

Time Lord

That's what I'm saying!!! - Kat

paul

"This must have been a nightmare to film" - and you just know they're all going to be bitching about it when we get to the series 4 making of! 😆

Firefly24601

I'd argue that the Rimmer in this episode is bitter, twisted, angry... AND homophobic.

Rob G

'Rimmers homophobia is an ugly part of this episode, and one of the ugliest aspects of the character.' I think you got this one wrong tbh.

Rob G

Ok, if so, how can the gals learn to love Rimmer once again considering they liked your comment?

Josef Schiltz

Possibly some generationally transmitted attitudes from his poisonous parents. You either follow them or - as the Twelfth Doctor explained to Rusty the Dalek about when he first met the Daleks - you find out who you are by defining yourself by what you are not.

Bill

Found the Gals through Becca and Cthulhu when Paula guested. Then followed here and found Kat. So... both? Both. Both is good.

Katrine Myra

IT'S TIME. Every week I've been like "it's this one, right... no, wait." Can't wait to watch this. :D

Katrine Myra

Yeah, that's the thing about Rimmer. He's repressed in so many ways, he's sexist, homophobic, and just a general smeghead... but we love him. I forget... there's a Shakespeare play, I believe, though I forget which one, where a couple talk about their flaws and how they love one another because of them, not despite them. I feel that applies particularly to Rimmer. He's one of the most flawed characters I know that is yet somehow also very loveable. They talk about it in the documentaries, a little...

Katrine Myra

I think you're spot on. What irks Rimmer the most about Ace is that he's comfortable in his own... everything. And so is Lister, which is something Rimmer has always been jealous of. And so, seeing them together...! I will say, I've always wondered about Spanners. I know it's down to making the character as visually different as possible, but compared to Our Dave (Skipper), he's downright subdued. I have a headcanon where Spanners got the woman of his dreams, a good job and a family, but had to conform. So our Lister may be lost in space and the last human being in existance, but he's still his authentic self.

Bret Hart

One of my favorite episodes, as it's surprisingly thought provoking. What decisions could have changed the course of one's life, indeed? Thanks for being here - both of you.

Paflad

To my mind, side-eyeing the homophobia in Rimmer's reaction to Ace as an unfortunate example of a product of its time not aging well is an easy reaction, and one I had at first, but I think it's actually the opposite. The show, by way of Kryten, calls him out on his behaviour, and Ace himself; the "better" version of Rimmer; while he doesn't take Bongo up on his offer, isn't offended by or judmental about it. The show is on the right side of history with this one, it's just the weak and insecure Rimmer who isn't

Skyrous

Brittas Empire I haven't thought about that show in years! That was a funny show!

Sebastian Bodine

Ace Rimmer is one of the best characters this show ever created! I always loved that he's a caricature of an action hero but still genuinely well-intentioned. Apparently, Chris Barrie's Ace wig went missing after this episode. We can only wonder about who stole it!

Josef Schiltz

Would that be Beatrice and Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing that you are thinking of? - They seem the obvious ones from your description and wonderfully played by Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson in the 90s film. Benedick. They swore that you were almost sick for me. Beatrice. They swore that you were well-nigh dead for me. Benedick. 'Tis no such matter. Then you do not love me? Beatrice. No, truly, but in friendly recompense. Leonato. Come, cousin, I am sure you love the gentleman. Claudio. And I'll be sworn upon't that he loves her; For here's a paper written in his hand, A halting sonnet of his own pure brain, Fashion'd to Beatrice. Hero. And here's another Writ in my cousin's hand, stolen from her pocket, Containing her affection unto Benedick. Benedick. A miracle! here's our own hands against our hearts. Come, I will have thee; but, by this light, I take thee for pity. Beatrice. I would not deny you; but, by this good day, I yield upon great persuasion; and partly to save your life, for I was told you were in a consumption.

Josef Schiltz

Except when there are chaotic kittens?

Josef Schiltz

Where's Chopper? I'm here for kittens!

hrcaffee

If you put up a poll,... the cats are going to win 😋

Darryl Glynn

I'm here for Paula. If only I was 30 years younger. ;) BTW, Ace Rimmer reminds me of myself. What a guy I was! Smoke me a kipper, gals. I'll be back for breakfast.

Chris Neumann

Paula, nice catch with "Bonehead" on the back of young Rimmer's uniform (is IS the same young Rimmer from Timeslides and mother from Polymoprh). Trivia time: The nicknames "Ace" and "Bonehead" were first brought up in 2x01 Kryten, and "What a guy!" was in 1x06 Me2!

Travis Boyle

Had to pause the video before the episode started from laughing. First it was Paula and her hoodie. And then the "who does the audience likes better debate." Then the fidget ring. Then the rebranding with a z discussion. Funny stuff. Oh and almost forgot the episode reaction was fun too. Keep up the great stuff Gals.

Luke Lawley

Can I just say, as an almost life long red dwarf fan, going as far as when it came out, I absolutely fucking love you girls. You're well worth the money I pay to watch you. You're both brilliant 👌

Luke Lawley

That's awesome. Thanks mate 👍

Salix

I had often heard this but never knew where it was in the shot. So yeah thanks for the link

Troy Convers

Rewatching this for ooh, no reason, seeing what comes next...

Frank Murphy

Flash hearts more standard rimmer he's a bit of a bastard

Frank Murphy

I'm here for both of you. You are very balanced

Frank Murphy

If you want more ace backstory it's all in the books. Most of which are on audible and youtube narrated by Chris barrie and Craig Charles

Tom

You probably know by now but spanner is what Americans call a wrench.
