Will watch this later. My favourite series of the show, and a good Rimmer episode especially after last week. Being that she's from Lancashire (North of Manchester) Jane Horrocks puts on a great classy accent. I think that Matthew Marsh (Captain Platini) was one of the final selected or runner-up actor to play Rimmer.

Chris Bordeman

I can't hear a word of the dialog without jacking up your voices to atomic blast level. ;(

Kieran B

I’ve been looking forward to this one, it’s one of my absolute favourites too. Jane Horrocks who plays Commander Crane is brilliant, you should listen to her speak in her normal Lancashire accent - especially as you found her vocal stylings interesting in this one. There’s a “5 Minute Interview with Jane Horrocks” on YouTube that’s pretty good. If you’ve seen Chicken Run you’ve heard it- she’s the chicken that knits. She’s also a regular in the comedy series Absolutely Fabulous and is incredible as the lead in the film Little Voice (and was nominated for a Golden Globe and SAG Award). She’s done loads of stuff, she has a great podcast about beekeeping too funnily enough.

AlyAdmirer

Well, the MOST obvious place you two would recognize Don Warrington (Binks) from is "Rise of the Cybermen"... :-)

Enter the Matrixster

With the Kryten redesign it's to cut down on makeup time. Robert Llewellyn spent 6 hours in makeup to start with. By later series they managed to cut it down to 2 without sacrificing quality

TuneIntoSanityFM

I can't believe Paula made Me cry over a Rimmer episode

AirForceOnesie

I love the pause Rimmer has after the "Japanese Meals" line, like he's trying to work out whether to be offended or not! I think the two writers, Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, when they worked together, gave the show both humour and heart. Season 5 is I think my favourite: I'm so looking forward to your reactions!

Jasper de Vries

Craig Charles in the heat of the moment did - unscripted - eat the cigarette (and regretted it vocally as soon as the director yelled 'cut').

Jasper de Vries

Her performance in Little Voice is amazing.

Kieran B

It really is

Bruce Bromley

A great season opener, which it wasn't supposed to be. This was the third episode filmed. The original episode was thought to be better as series ender. There is also twelve that were cut for time, I believe they are all in the Series Five deleted scenes. I'd never kid Paula for shedding a tear. The writers do like to bring in the feels once in a while.

Susan K Dailey Photography

This is one of my all-time favourite episodes, easily one of Rimmer's best moments. And guest appearances from Jane Horrocks and Don Warrington make it all the better!

Brodie Vickers

Oh yeah we get a topless Chris Barrie is this series too, HAWT haha. Twice actually.

Martyn Hill

Great reaction, a very good episode, not quite the best in the season for me. The actor Kat thought she recognized was Don Warrington who was president in the Cyberman two-parter in DFavid Tenants (first) era of Doctor Who

Brodie Vickers

I'm pretty sure that Voyager took this idea for an episode.

Glenn Dudley

All the episodes in Series 5 are excellent but my personal favourite has to be episode 4, can't wait to see your reaction to it

Paul Flux

Definitely one of my favourite episodes. Great script, wonderful cast, great acting. Jane Horrocks as Commander Crane gives an amazing performance, and such a departure from her usual speaking voice.

Paul Flux

Paula: "Maybe he's going to be a bit less of a sh**head?" Red Dwarf veterans: "umm, don't hold your breath Paula"!

John Veitch

This is the definitive Kryten look for me. His s3 and 4 masks made him look more like a "gag" character.

Rob G

It would be great to see the Gals react to Absolutely Fabulous tbh, not many reactors do but it was hilarious. Same goes for The Mighty Boosh which I always thought was really funny and imaginative.

Rob G

If this episode is a new favourite for Paula it's definitely a new favourite reaction for me all thanks to her. Shedding tears over a Rimmer episode was not what I was expecting but it was incredibly sweet. Although Rimmer didnt realise his dream it was probably for the best. He would have been on that ship with his old intellect and would have been a complete inferior to everyone else, and knowing how arrogant they are towards people with less intelligence they would probably never let him forget it. Hence his dream would never had been fulfilled in reality. Looking forward to more reactions thanks Gals!

Paul Baldwin

This is the beginning of a very steady slow character arc for rimmer keep watchin :P

Dan Crucy

This episode was okay, but everyone knows this show doesn't get good until season 15.

Paflad

It's really something when you think about it, that they've managed to make a character clearly designed to be comically, pathetically hateable and make him so genuinely broken and sympathetic, while never once losing touch with the joke. That being said, I did not see the tears coming at all. Empathy, thy name is Paula.

Mark Ten

Let me put in an early vote for series X & XI

There's a line in this episode that is really interesting - it is when Rimmer takes the blame for his father's strokes, a disclosure he honestly believes. In that single moment, we see the harm that his appalling parents did to him. Under the bitterness, under the contempt he has for his parents, under the love he still has for them... he blames himself for their woes. He was abused so badly that he was made to believe that he - as a child and a young man - was the malignant entity in their sick family unit. Its like with his trial for destroying Red Dwarf - he is carrying a massive guilt that does not belong. He is so fucking broken. He is described as "human wreckage" and he is exactly that. In Better than Life, we see that his subconscious will sabotage any attempt at happiness - probably driven by his guilt - and you can expand this to explain so much about him. He would choose to fail the same exam a dozen times and suffer the pain of failure, even though (as Lister proved in Balance of Power), there are much easier ways to traverse the command structure. He chooses to have utterly ridiculous hobbies - such as telegraph poles and wire collecting - to ensure that he cannot make any meaningful bonds with people as these hobbies are impenetrable and absurd. He makes absurd and nonsensical asks to those in power, asks that have no chance of being fulfilled - such as requesting the Death Penalty for Lister in Stasis Leak, or imprisonment for also Lister in The End - in order to ensure he is never taken seriously. He will not allow himself to be happy. In Me Squared, his hatred of himself - via his copy - was actually disturbingly visceral. But, he reacts enormously positively to love. Not just romantic love, but any love. When he got six months of Lister's memories (and ex-girlfriend) in Thanks for the Memory, the idea that someone could love him even for this short period of his life, immediately changed him. When he believed that Lister had sacrificed his guitar to protect Rimmer's belongings in Marooned, Rimmer immediately changes into someone of respect and consideration, going so far as to call Lister "Dave" and demanding to make a sacrifice of his own. In Holoship, the love of Commander Crane utterly overrides his selfish (self-preservation and defensive) behaviours and he saves her at the cost of everything to himself. He has no love for himself, only hate. But when he actually gets a snippet of positivity, he is capable of remarkable change. The ultimate solution for Rimmer though, is not external love. He needs therapy, so so so so much therapy, so that he can learn to - if not love - then at least respect himself. If he can do that, he could unlock everything.

paul

I've always loved this episode but it's been years since I last saw it and it's great to see how well it holds up. It's crazy how many classic funny scenes they still manage to cram in around such a strong main romantic story: Lister's cigarette eating face off with Binks, the female hologram who'd rather remain dead than join their curry nights, Rimmer's amazing "people I met" goodbye speech... Cat's classic line, "Quick let's get out of here before they bring him back!"

Rob G

Dude, as much as that might seem a bit overboard, and Im not one to comment how nerd like that is. I tend to have a drinky poo when looking at subsequent comments.. You are clearly dialling yourself into the psychology of the series which is fucking amazing, thanks!

Mab7373822

Thanks mate. I've been watching these characters for decades and been thinking a lot about what makes them tick.

DOSGamerMan

Honestly one of the best things I have seen Jane Horrocks in is this episode.

Rob G

Simon M that was an amazing post but I feel there is a contradiction. Rimmer as you say does respond to love in a positive way, extremely well! So he does not need therapy, to attend therapy is to attend a person that does not care about him but will listen to him for financial gain, even if the therapist has the best intentions. Responding to genuine care and affection is a whole different matter which you pointed out, genuine love brings out the best in people, not therapy.

Raven Stromdans

I love how much of a soft touch Paula is. Honestly, I don't think this is going to be the last episode, not even the last Rimmer episode, that might catch her heartstrings. (not so sure about Kat...I feel like their emotions have different angle of approach, so it's harder to tell what will resonate). My favorite bit about this episode of actually Lister's back and forth with the holoship's scout officer and the running joke of Cat making unfulfillable suggestions. It was a fun opening to the series. At this point, I've been actively avoiding revisiting each episode and indeed each series so that I can be as close to surprised as the Gals are which each post and I've largely forgotten what episodes comprise Series 5...so I'm looking forward to enjoying this (almost) blind reaction journey. Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Gals! I'll be over here smoking kippers until the next episode!

Chris Neumann

And apparently he got the memo early enough to start working out.

Chris Neumann

Do you remember way back in series 2, "Thanks For The Memory?" Rimmer literally tells Lister that he would give up his career "to be in love, and to have been loved?" He doesn't even have to think about it. And we've also seen him be willing to make sacrifices before, in "Marooned" once he thinks Lister has burned his guitar, the most important thing he has, Rimmer is enthusiastic about burning his stuff because now that act meant something important.

Blower

Paula: Aww, *tearing up* Kat : Rimmer, oh you sad sack of shit... Your reactions are just the best! lol

Mab7373822

Hi, I get your point, but I think that Rimmer so desperately latches on to any external love or affection because he doesn't have an internal respect for himself. If he can just be helped to not hate or blame himself, through therapy or any other intervention, maybe it wouldn't take external acts of love or affection to bring forward the genuinely nicer and selfless parts of his psyche. Still, obviously I'm not a therapist and maybe this isn't the exact prescription of what he needs. But if he could just be taught to not be so harsh on himself and sabotage every attempt at a moments happiness, he'd be in a far better place.

pbaker

This was a low rated episode when it first aired and I remember in an interview Rob and Doug said they were going for an emotional response but didn’t feel they’d got there. I hope Rob and Doug get to see this reaction.

pbaker

When you said ‘I bet people out there are now saying VII and VIII are the best’ I think there may have been some raised eyebrows amongst the long term Dwarfers.

Sebastian Bodine

This episode has two things that I found highly underrated: 1) Kryten's objection to Rimmer's "You are your job" statement by bringing up how what you do to pay the bills is not an reliable indicator to your worth as a person and 2) that amazing 20 seconds of atmospheric music in-between Rimmer confessing to Crane in the elevator and Rimmer letting the Dwarf crew that he's won. The Series V DVD uses that music for the scene selection options and sometimes I just let it loop because I can't get enough on how it feels like a person's melancholy echoing out into the empty void. That music clip is so good that it could have been in the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack.

Sebastian Bodine

I also forgot to mention that I think we had to start off with a redeeming episode for Rimmer because the creators knew that they made him cross a line with Meltdown, so it was best to get him to win us over again.

Sebastian Bodine

Some good stuff, but I was floored with how good Series XII is, especially the last two episodes. I just wish each episode had an extra 30 secs-1 min to let scenes breathe a little more

BriefMortal

Tight writing, great guest casting, and subverting expectations. Red Dwarf at its best. So happy you really liked this episode ☺

Katrine Myra

100%. Which is not to say (and I'm not suggesting you are) that Rimmer just needs to be loved, and he'll be Ace Rimmer. There's an inherent smeggishness about Rimmer which is just part of who he is as a person. I always like to say the the "ideal" Rimmer - as in, a Rimmer who'd be his best self - is somewhere between Arn and Ace. :)

Katrine Myra

What a wonderful reaction - I'm so glad Paula got so much out of it. It's certainly a great episode, and IMO a really nice SF concept too, with the holoship. Series IV, V and VI all quite equal in quality, to my mind, and it honestly just comes down to taste. V and VI are my favorites, I go back and forth with which one I prefer. You both seem to enjoy the same things I like about the show, so I am holding out hope that I'll get to see you react to the 2020 miniseries, eventually. There's a scene in that one that I would bet money would make you both cry. ;)

Lizbeth Marcs

This episode (well, this whole season, really) is a pretty good illustration on why *most* Red Dwarf fans agree that Chris Barrie is the series' not-so-secret weapon. By this point, all of the cast is really a murder's row of comedic acting, and series 5 and 6 really is peak Red Dwarf where everything is firing on all cylinders (writing, acting, sci-fi concepts, FX), but Barrie really is the stand-out in series 5 because they really put him through *a lot*. Don't listen to the naysayers on later series. While I'm not fond of series 7, it has a couple of stand-out episodes. I do like series 8, but that's because I love the Lister-Rimmer dynamic during that run. Plus, I think the Dave seasons (series X through The Promised Land), while not at the same high as Series 5 and 6, are also quite good.

Rime Pendragon

That's why you watch along with your own copy.

Dr Q Who

Noticed anything different about the end credits?

Travis Boyle

XII - Episode 6 was awesome.

Travis Boyle

That was a great scene. I re watch it every once in awhile on YouTube. Whole movie was fun.

Kieran B

Completely agree, there’s also some fantastic episodes in the Dave run

Kieran B

Yes please, all the Red Dwarf

Josef Schiltz

I just read along with the subtitles.

Lizbeth Marcs

Agreed. Even the Dave eps that some fans consider "clunkers" have enough funny in them to make them perfectly re-watchable, or at least re-watchable to me. I think part of the issue is that the characters are visibly older and, what's more, they're written that way. I get the sense that this is where some of the naysaying is coming from because a lot of long-time fans don't like the reminder that maybe they're getting older, too. Plus, at risk of annoying some people in the comments, I personally think that series X from the Dave era is on-par with series 3 from the BBC era. But that's just me, I guess.

Travis Boyle

I can't wait for Episode 5 reaction. Lol.

Troy Convers

I feel that Paula is going to be weeping buckets over one of the S7 eps... 👀

Troy Convers

Paula will be in bits over one of the S7 eps...

Frank Murphy

Good luck waiting for the no series 7 and 8 and 9 (which doesn't technically exist) is where it's at lol

Frank Murphy

God dam it, gets me emotional everytime lol
