This whole time... All of it... Was a lie!?!?!?

I would like to remind everyone about the discussion of moving forward with "watch-along" format regarding our full length reactions here on Patreon. As to make sure we are abiding by all fair use laws, we don't want to risk the channel going away entirely! Moving onto series 6 of Red Dwarf we will be moving into watch-along and therefore you will need to make sure you have a copy of the show itself to be able to watch along side us! As far as we have seen, Red Dwarf is available for free in the UK on iplayer and for others it is on Britbox or for FREE on TUBI! We thank you so much for your support through changes such as this!

John Veitch

I'm pretty sure "the Jewish" was a captioning error, and that Cat/Duane actually said "the druids". As in, his teeth look like Stonehenge.

Kieran B

It definitely is an error

Kieran B

Have been looking forward to this but heading to the theatre to see a friend’s show - will be watching as soon as I get back though!

Time Lord

We were just discussing this over in the Discord! Definitely makes *way* more sense for it to be a Stonehenge joke!! - Kat

Susan K Dailey Photography

Fun fact for you - Chris Barrie was considered for the part of the Doctor on more than one occasion - he first auditioned to be the Eighth Doctor, and was one of the frontrunners to replace Christopher Ecclestone when he left. Also that caption was wrong - the Cat said Druids.

Cedric Bombs

This is my all-time favourite Red Dwarf episode! And it caps off my favourite series

Jakob1978

I don’t know if you noticed, but the game engineer guy was played by Timothy Spall, who you might recognise from Harry Potter, he played Peter Pettigrew

Jasper de Vries

My favourite episode. Everything from this point on is downhill (with still some great episodes to go).

John Veitch

I checked the "Primordial Soup" script book and it says "Druids". :-)

Bruce Bromley

FYI, reminding all that Red Dwarf Series 1-12 is also available for FREE on the FREE Tubi app. As well as all 17 episodes of UK's The Prisoner, nudge, nudge, wink, wink. 🤞

HoratioMcSherry

For me, this episode is up there as one of the best 🙂 Clare Grogan, who plays Kochanski, was the lead singer for Altered Images in the 80s, but the singer of the end credits is Jenna Russell, who’s a pretty well-known British TV and theatre actress 🙂

Scribbles

It's okay, guys. The subtitles messed up that line that made you uncomfortable. He said the kind of teeth the *druids* could use as a place of worship. It was a reference to Stonehenge. I don't know why the subtitles put Jewish.

Henchman Twenty1

I had a conversation once with a guy who had worked for a company that did subtitles for TV shows and he confirmed that they usually did not get copies of the script and it was always a rush job to do it as quick as possible, so errors were always bound to pop up. He told me he got into heated arguments with his supervisor a few times about what the actual dialog was and she'd be like, "Just do as I say". He currently has his own website called TheDaily.WAV that has audio clips from shows and movies. No Red Dwarf clips but they do have clips from both old and new Dr. Who.

Mark Ten

Love watching the 4 scurrying around the Bug's cabin like playing musical chairs... and dont get me started on Dwayne Dibbley!

Blower

I'm unsure if watch along is going to work with Red Dwarf as there seems to be many different versions out there - UK catch up on sky has had some editing to some episodes where bits have definitely been cut. I think there are differences between Blu-ray & DVD releases and possibly differences between UK & US releases in general. Although i think the version you Gal's have been watching are the same as mine (which i will admit are just torrent downloads, but hey I've paid a TV license for 25 years so..... :D)

Joel Featherstone

That's an unfortunate error! Jewish didn't even make sense as a joke. Now just watch out for upset druids.

Jasper de Vries

Shoutout to the late Lenny von Dohlen as the fascist enforcer. The way he played that character as creepy and in charge to utter servility once Colonel Lister comes out of the shadows. He inches out Timothy Spall's guest part for me on this one.

Phil Birkett

It is "druids", 100%. Of course, the druids didn't actually have anything to do with Stonehenge, but that's another story!

Paul Flux

The outro song is sung by Jenna Russell, not Clare Grogan, but it does sound like it could be.

Makhiel

It's a throwaway line but "betray your friends and family, win fabulous prizes" always makes me laugh :D

Paul Flux

I remember watching this with a few friends when it first aired. We were all on tenterhooks for a while as to whether they really were going to end it on "it was all a video game"! We knew it was the last episode of the series, and by now we knew they had the courage to go places other shows wouldn't dare to. So *maybe* they might just end the whole show like that! Still one of my favourite episodes even after knowing how it turns out.

Brodie Vickers

Possibly the best Red Dwarf episode, and it shows. Are we getting a Smeg Ups today too?

John Veitch

I wonder if Rob and Doug were thinking of the song from Spinal Tap. :-)

DOSGamerMan

Yea, also noticed a few times where the subtitles were way off.

Phil Birkett

I know what you mean, but I'm a big series 6 defender, huge amounts of fun to be had there, including a season-ender that rivals or even surpasses this one.

Jasper de Vries

When I just rank the series as a whole, both series 5 and 6 come up as 5 strong episodes, 1 okay episode (with Demons and Angels being okay in series 5). But series 6 doesn't have any episode that resonates as much with me as Back to Reality does.

William Green

I think the cat said druids not jewish. So I can only assume he was talking about Stonehenge.

Jim

Yes the subtitles were wrong. the cat said Druids

Brodie Vickers

The subtitles are always way off with these.

Chris Neumann

He does, you can kind of hear it but the teeth make it hard to understand. The joke is that his teeth are as big as stonehenge, hence "a place the druids could use as aa place of worship." This is something that drives me crazy about this show, there's at least one error in the subtitles per episode.

Chris Neumann

I can't believe that it's THIS far into the series that we meet Duane Dibbley!

Glenn Dudley

All six episodes of Series 6 are truly excellent - my favourites are episodes 1 & 3...

Dr.Dragon

Anyone want to bet that the moment Rimmer got back to Red Dwarf, he checked that swimming certificate? Just in case.

Graham Mills

And if you actually want to hear Clare Grogan singing, you can find Altered Images on Spotify.

gobmob2000

I was a bit shocked by the idea that oriental is now a bad word? Where did that suddenly come from? You two mentioned it, so I looked it up and I was gobsmacked to learn that its now considered bad. Maybe its a American thing, because here in Britain this just seems strange to us. As far as I am aware, the word oriental literally comes from the Latin word for eastern, referring to the eastern part of the Roman empire when it was split in two. That is why its called "the oriental express", i.e. the "eastern" express. If oriental is bad, you would also have to say that Southerners or Northerners is bad. I mean, I am a Northener, Many people in Britain, particular the South, refer to us as Northeners, I don't see what's so bad about it. So that feels really strange to me.

IcarusAbides

They do the BSG episodes as you've described there so you shouldn't have any issues syncing up with Red Dwarf episodes

Lizbeth Marcs

Sue, you are not alone! I love all of the Dave era seasons. Season 9 (the mini) I was a bit confused on the first watch, but on re-watching it really holds up.

Chris Neumann

oh he's wonderfully creepy in this episode. And for a show that's supposed to be about the last four individuals in the universe, they get a pretty solid stack of guest stars and one-off characters.

Chris Neumann

Continuity watch: Total Immersion Video Games first appeared in Better Than Life, which also wound up feeding on the character's worst fears and despair. The room with the chairs is a redress of the Holoship's bridge (the Holoship corridor was also reused as the "Cloud City" corridor in Demons and Angels). If you remember "The Last Day," Rimmer mentions that his mum slept around and right after, Lister mentions that he doesn't know who his parents are, hinting at thte idea that he and Rimmer could be related. I was so curious if you two would have picked up on that, since they get to pay that off in this episode. Replacement Rimmer has the Holoship H on his forehead, probably because they had a bunch of spares, but perhaps it suggests that he already found the captain's message and recovered his real memory, giving him "Enlightenment" status. The idea of there being a secret message in Rimmer's swimming certificates makes a lot of sense if you remember that Rimmer signs his name with SSC BSC (silver swimming certificate, bronze swimming certificate).

BazT47

How will we all make sure our video and audio are in sync with yours for when next episode comes around? How will that work?

Jasper de Vries

Oriental as an adverb has a history of fetishizing all kinds of Asian pop culture which is bad enough. The show uses Oriental as a noun though, which has historically been very objectifying ("their race is all that is meaningful about them"). So yes, it has a long history, but a lot of that history has been troubled as well and it is totally on brand for the Gals to speak out on that.

Firefly24601

There will be a timer and fuzzy video to help sync, as well as periodic clear video. If you look at the latest Patreon reactions to BSG or Doctor Who, you can see how it looks.

Firefly24601

Oriental as referring to inanimate objects is generally acceptable. Oriental as referring to people is generally not.

Data Cable

Ironically, if only Duane's teeth weren't so huge, he might have been more easily understood.

Chris Neumann

Okay, since y'all record a bit in advance, I think it's okay to say we need to send Kat a cake with the words "they won't get rid of the Red Dwarf" written on it. (And how much a spoiler is that? They blew up the filming model and they can't afford to build a new one).

Chris Neumann

It REALLY hurts the show. As a hearing impaired person it annoys me, but especially on a show where you can tell the dialogue is really thought through.

Katrine Myra

It's all in Kryten's delivery. I do the same.

Funny That

Might the number of Asian-related takeaways and restaurants is keeping the word in active use this side of the pond With so many other adjectives and nouns in use we always need new ways to have a unique name that also alludes to the sort of food served. Just googled "orient takeaway belfast" and there is a fair few. Not that liking Asian food gives us a free pass, because among the small army of TV cooks we still only have Ken Hom breaking in to the wider culture that I can remember. Anyway, only recently came across a discussion about how in some languages/cultures, the notions of westside/eastside and such, do not exist. Can't remember which video I watched, but here is a wiki article to prove I'm not imagining it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_and_spatial_cognition#:~:text=Speakers%20of%20absolute%20languages%20would,they%20are%20facing%20during%20speech. "What a world. what a world" - Wicked Witch of the Occidens

gobmob2000

Hmm, this seems to me like it must be a American thing, this idea as Oriental being bad, as far as I can tell, just does not exist in Britain. Like already mentioned by others, a huge number of our Asian restaurant are have Oriental in their name. And Britain does have a deep history with the Orient. If anything, Oriental is probably a romanticised word for east Asian culture. I.e. its a word emphasising our respect and fascination with east Asian culture and the beauty we see in it. At least that is always the vibe I got from the word, I never heard it used as a slur. For that matter, what we in Britain would call Asian, is more middle Asian, i.e. Indian, Pakistan etc But I could be wrong, Ill ask my 2 Asian colleagues tomorrow, when I am in work, what they think of the word. But knowing them, I reckon they think the notion that oriental is bad is strange as well.

pbaker

You can imagine in 1992 we were all shouting ‘more, more’. In hindsight this would have been the perfect last ever episode but there’s great stuff to come.

Travis Boyle

Personally enjoyed the heck out of VI, X, XI, XII, and Promised Land. 7 has some great stuff too to me.

Bruce Bromley

Totally the fault of wherever they download the show from. On Tubi the subs are spot on, with knowing the difference between Druid and Jewish.

Sebastian Bodine

Is there a way we can dump these awful stupidly done AI-made subtitles? They are completely misinterpreting the dialogue! How do you get "No-style gimbo that Druids can use as a place for worship" into "the Jewish can use as a place for worship"?

Sebastian Bodine

I feel that all subtitles should've been curated by the show-runners or at least fans of the show! It is driving me crazy that they just leave these massive errors that the human ear can pick up as wrong!

Sebastian Bodine

again, they messed up with "cybernautic division" with "cybernetic". You'd think that these subtitles were written by the prats that cancelled the show!

Sebastian Bodine

This episode is easily one of those trailblazers of sci-fi! Before Matrix and Dark City, Red Dwarf had our crew doubting if they were themselves at all.

Firefly24601

I'd be careful about assuming how far ahead they are. Sometimes it's a lot, sometimes it's almost nothing. The ideal IS to be a few episodes ahead, but that's not always possible. They have 4 shows to juggle, plus real life to schedule.

Aidan Lunn

For the record, Cat said “Druids”, not “Jewish”. The AI subtitles heard the wrong word. Again! I can tell that the subtitles are not the ones on the BBC releases as they were typed out from the scripts by a stenographer. Whoever ripped these episodes from the DVDs for you didn’t rip the subtitle track files with them.

Aidan Lunn

One episode in S6 - E3 - won an Emmy!!!

BriefMortal

Now imagine watching this episode before the internet. You know its the last episode of the series, and its the 5th series as well, not a bad run for a Brit-com. Halfway through I seriously thought this was the finale and my heart had sunk! 😂🤣

Carlos Hernandez

Nobody ever points this out but the jump starts the second big bang thing was actually something we saw in the show. It was in the Qweeg episode the cables that Holly tells Lister to join together it always made me think the whole thing actually was the game after this

Josh McPherson

No, the creators of the show would never blow up their one and only model of Red Dwarf that they had...

David Shadwell

Also in The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise and played the artist J.M.W Turner in the film Mr Turner amongst many other film roles. The role of Fascist Cop went to Lenny Von Dohlen who is an American actor who has appeared in the likes of Jennifer 8, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, Home Alone 3, Electric Dreams, etc. So had quite a star-studded cast for this one. Lenny is actually a friend of Francis Barber who played the role of the Gelf when it was seducing Cat back in Polymorph. She loved the show and suggested he take a role in it so he somehow ended up doing this.

David Shadwell

This is the last absolute classic to me but then that is such a high bar to reach. Series is 6 is solid that sags a little in the middle but the first 2 and last are still very good in my book. Series 7 starts pretty well but tails off dramatically but still has some great scenes and lines. And will stop there as I can't say much that is nice about Series 8! Other views are available of course and are equally, if not, more valid than my own. . . . . But just remembered the Emmy winning ep in Series 6 so, no, that is the last stone-cold classic in my book. Honest.

David Shadwell

This is a belter and is just jam-packed from beginning to end. There are some lines of dialogue that got cut for time that make it even smoother as there are a couple of points where you can see the edits - Kryten has more dialogue when they are running back to Starbug in the Esperanto and Rimmer spells out his vision for his life as William Doyle. Everything about it works; the look, the casting, the dialogue, the physical acting by Danny as Duanne, the story. It really is up there as the best ep. I did always wish they had been really brave and left this as a cliffhanger for series 5, so explored the world more. Then resolved it in the series 6 opener. Or maybe a whole season in Fascist world! What you can do is search online for the Red Dwarf Smegazine as there are some issues of this long gone comic that have been archived and uploaded for you to browse. So you can continue the adventures of the crew where Rimmer is drawn in black and white (as Rob and Doug originally envisaged him to be), enjoy Kryten's favourite soap 'Androids', follow the life of the very naughty Mr Flibble and Ace Rimmer continues his quest to find a worse Rimmer. There are also two spin-offs from this ep; the very tongue-on-cheek Cred Dwarf which shows the new crew in the game and a Jake Bullet strip as well. I think there was also a story line in one that told what happened to the 2nd Polymorph.

paul

This was just as good as I remember although it felt a bit darker and more serious this time around. They went for quite a while at the start without a joke and it didn't end on a joke either, unusually. I definitely fell for the idea that it had all been a game when I saw this back in the day. Funny you compared it to the Matrix, I think when I saw the Matrix at the cinema in 99 I was like, "oh, so it's basically Back To Reality!"

paul

I love Cat's line about "why is it always me who has to be the strong one", like in his mind the whole time he wasn't being vain or narcissistic, he was being stoic and solid to hold the crew together. 😆

John Veitch

That raises a lot of other questions, not related to the swimming certificate.

Dr Q Who

Can’t wait for your reactions on the next episode.

Katrine Myra

Absolutely one of my favorite episodes, but I'm not alone in that. This one usually does well in rankings, and for good reason IMO. I love how alive the alternate reality setting feels, despite how little we actually see of it. What is WITH that look Rimmer and Lister give one another when they discover they're brothers, though?! It's so intense. Always makes me giggle.

Starromania72

I spotted Timothy Spall in a local bookshop when they were filming a bunch of scenes for Last Samurai in and around my hometown in New Zealand. He was busy asking the assistant where their classics section was (practically non-existent unfortunately). For me, it's still hard not to think of him as Barry from Auf Wiedersehen Pet.

tal goren

In regard to your ever-growing outro, it seems that you dropped "see you later alligator". was that on purpose?

Time Lord

Firefly put it perfectly! We leave the video sound and clear image up in the beginning to help with initial syncing. After that, there is a timer and then a blurred image of the episode stays in to help with keeping synced up throughout the reaction!

Jonathan Giles

Such an amazing show. Can't wait to continue the Red dwarf journey

Firefly24601

You'd think Britbox US (still partially owned by the BBC) would have better captions than Tubi which is wholly owned by FOX. But nope.

John Veitch

It is ironic that Lister and Kryten specifically are driven to suicidal despair by thinking that they are "a murderer and a mass murderer" - evidence that Rob and Doug hadn't thought through the consequences of their actions in "The Inquisitor".

Stuart Cork

That line from Dwain that had you worried is a mistake in the subtitles. He doesn't say Jewish. He actually says "...teeth the Druids could use as a place of worship..." the joke is Stonehenge in England which is a ring of stone monoliths that he is likening to his teeth.

Frank Murphy

Do you check all the things in your dreams? Wouldn't hurt to check though

irreverend

I've certainly never considered it to have negative connotations. It is considered offensive in the US however (although I've been told people from that background actually don't mind it much), I believe mainly because of the concentration camps the US put anyone a bit Oriental looking into during WW2 over the possibility of Japanese spies. I recall reading that was possibly one of the main reasons the word fell out of fashion as acceptable.

SnabbKassa

Yes. I noticed that. The subtitling is very poor and has a lot of inaccuracies.

SnabbKassa

Well, it's not "Kochanski" singing the theme song, but if you want to hear Clare Grogan singing, check out Happy Birthday by Altered Images

Chris K

And that's it for Hattie Hayridge as Holly! Saved their lives and was never seen again. I enjoy Norman Lovett as Holly a lot, but Hattie made Holly a whole different character - to say nothing of being Holly during the show's golden era, so she's the one I've watched the most.
