I love this episode. The reveal of "low" Rimmer is one of the funniest moments in the whole show. But the next epsidoe is my favourite of all and the first time I saw (at first broadcast) it is something I will never forget. Put it this way, all these episodes have IMDb ratings in the low 8s. The next epsiode is 9.3. I'd say that's about right.

Kieran B

I don’t know if it’s a more intense experience but part of the joy of reactions is the vicarious feeling of seeing someone enjoy something that you love. You get to see it with slightly fresh eyes, it’s not quite like watching it for the first time again but it captures something of the essence of that (I wrote that last bit before you mentioned it yourselves)

Jasper de Vries

I can see where this could be upsetting, but as a sci-fi concept the "split into good and bad" is quite imaginative.

Tony Mingoia

The thing about low Rimmer being gay... I think it's just because they needed him to be sexually threatening, because the low side of Rimmer, or anyone, would be like that, but since he has to be sexually threatening towards Lister, he has to be gay. I don't think they are suggesting there is anything inherently perverse about homosexuality.

WezMan444

Yeah this is probably the only episode of red dwarf that I don’t like, for all the reasons you listed and a few more besides.

Cedric Bombs

Probably the weakest episode of series 5, but I always love the "I'm sneaking up behind you now sir" bit

Bruce Bromley

I do agree on Kat's point, but honestly both the Highs and Lows (the original title of the episode, BTW) were both over the top. On your points Paula, I give Fraiser a pass, more than I would Friends. Being that one of Frasier's creator's was guy, along with at least two of the cast. If any situation or joke was too egregious, they would let it be known.

Raven Stromdans

I don't have a lot to say on the subject of the episode itself; it's probably my least favorite episode of Red Dwarf. It has always felt...not particularly well written or thought out, frankly; the premise of what constitutes a High or a Low seemed woefully uncomplimentary to either concept, but as you pointed out particularly poorly realized in the Lows. How unpleasant this episode is I kind of find ironic, considering the following episode is actually one of my very favorites of the entire series. On the subject from the beginning of the reaction, however, I will say that watching anything *with* someone definitely has a different impact that watching alone, which I feel may be why I personally watch less tv and fewer movies these days and watch way more reactions...I don't have anyone at home to watch stuff with anymore and even if it's something I've already watched, it's a much more fulfilling experience to watch something old as a reaction than watching something new on my own. And that leads directly to how much I enjoy watching your reactions, Kat and Paula. It really gives parasocial feels, but I genuinely enjoy watching along with you, seeing your reactions and gauging them against my own, past and present. I can genuinely never thank you enough for sharing this journey with all of us. I'm really looking forward to the next episode and the subsequent series 6 run. Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Gals! Me and Mr. Flibble will be here smoking a kipper until you return with the next episode.

Susan K Dailey Photography

I think this episode is definitely a product of its time, but Rimmer’s low self has been discussed a lot online. I’ve got some thoughts about his low self too. My first theory starts with Rimmer’s awful childhood, with his horrible abusive parents, and where he grew up (Io) seems to have been very conservative. I think he grew up repressing his sexuality because of this. As a result he’s internalised his own feelings about his sexuality so much that they manifest in his low self as a negative trait because Rimmer thinks of it as a bad thing even though it’s clearly not. My other theory is that he would have behaved in a sexually threatening way to a female character if they’d been present, but they weren’t, which inadvertently frames his homosexuality or bisexuality as a bad thing when again, it’s not. But either way I have to concede it was a cheap way to get laughs in the 90s.

Bret Hart

When I watch your reactions, I know I'm in a safe place, so I'm able to let my emotional guard down as I would when I'm by myself. As an empath I definitely pick up how the two of you are feeling, so it can get intense. But that's cathartic, too, so it's all good. As for this episode, not a personal fave at al.

Henchman Twenty1

The fact that the Low crew were so disturbing and so uncomfortable to watch shows what a great job the guys did with their parts. If we are each not uncomfortable and disturbed by our own Low sides then we're likely on Wanted posters. It's that inner revulsion that helps keep (most of) us at least civil.

paul

Could this be the only episode of Red Dwarf with no guest cast whatsoever?

Carlos Hernandez

Honestly wondering what if Star Trek had done an episode like this. Original series or the Next Gen how would it fit there

Henchman Twenty1

There was a TOS episode where a transporter malfunction split Kirk into two halves. I won't elaborate more because - spoilers, but bad Kirk almost did something very, very bad.

Jakob1978

Off the top of my head, there’s Marooned, Bodyswap (although there’s a couple of uncredited voice overs) both from s3, and there’s at one episode in each of the next 2 series (won’t say anything else due to spoilers tho)

Mark Ten

I deny saying "Just watch the damn episode..." and... and... how did you know?

MCT

I think this is pretty spot on. I do think Red Dwarf holds up better on a lot of social stuff than a lot of stuff from the 90s but it definitely does drop the occasional clanger (there are a couple of bits in series 8 in particular that are especially bad).

Nick Turner

In answer to your question about how I feel about watching red dwarf along with you.... I find I'm enjoying it way more than usual. I've watched all these episodes multiple times but I never laughed (or even cried) as much as when watching it with you guys. It's very strange.

paul

Ah yes Marooned... and I think I know the season 6 episode. I think Bodyswap had a female officer appear briefly to turn off the self destruct system.

Daniel Graham

I get you Gals' point at the end and you're 100% correct, and I'm probably making excuses for the bad humor, since it WAS clearly present in the Ace comments by Rimmer in earlier episodes, BUT I kinda view their take on Low Rimmer in this episode as more of just a sexual deviant who would "have" anyone.... I'm not comparing homosexuality with deviancy (I'm gay myself,) however, a big part of the show is that it's a bunch of dudes in space... they take every opportunity to make sexual jokes about the presence of a female in any episodes they appear, so for Rimmer to become, imo we'll say "Hypersexual," not "homosexual," is not out of the wheelhouse. That all said, I can def understand how anyone would still just feel a little cringe over these bits. I tend to just enjoy seeing Chris Barrie put on ridiculous costumes and act silly these days. Thanks for keeping up with Red Dwarf, love the reactions.

Katrine Myra

Bit of a side note, but I feel like whenever Rimmer is shown expressing interest in women, it's so exaggerated and... performative? So however you choose to interpret it, the man certainly has some issues with repression...!

Alex

It’s an ok episode until they get to the low ship then it loses its way, even watching it as a teenager way back when thought it was weak. Especially now though with how low Rimmer is portrayed i completely agree Kat. I remind myself it’s a product of its time whenever these lazy jokes appear and thankfully they’re few and far between. There is one episode in a few seasons that’s in such poor taste i can’t help but skip when i get to it honestly. It’s frankly a black eye on the show overall. But hey, that’s not for a while yet and you both have loads of absolute banger episodes to enjoy before then which shows this series at its best!

Jesse Sharp

Its not considered the weakest episode of season 5 for nothing!

Mark Ten

Hi Paula, way off topic but you mentioned again watching Gravity Falls with your partner and having different reactions this time... I guess youve gotten to Stan holding a funeral for his wax double. Now that you know his secret, that he had a twin bro missing for 30 years and he may have been responsible for his death, did the over the top eulogy strike you differently? One of the cleverest parts of the story is that Stan was actually eulogizing his brother, but it would be almost 4 years air time before we know that.

TuneIntoSanityFM

It surprises me how emotional I can get watching reactions. Paula made me tear up watching Holoship- Nothing to do with the episode, I've seen it too many times. But when people start to get teary about something that's special to you, the empathy just swells up!

Mark Ten

Help me out? Is this the episode where the Tardis appears in the landing bay? I dont want to do another rewatch but will if this is the one. Its a blink & you'll miss it thing where Starbug is leaving the landing bay, the Tardis appears to one side... I think?

MCT

I used to love this episode as I tend to like the more horror style ones, but the more I watch it, in addition to the thing with Rimmer, I feel there's not enough time in the episode to dedicate to what are essentially ten new characters, so it has a weirdly barebones feel to it (even though there's so much crammed into it) where they create alternative versions of each character without actually exploring most of them in any detail (besides the lows listing a few bad things Lister did in his past).

Porpoise Power

"Demon" Holly is totaly rocking a Siouxsie Sioux look, and I love it. Yeah the homophobia is really dated.

Geraint Harrison

This is indeed the episode, the tardis is to the right of the landing bay as starbug is exiting.

Wade Wallenstein

From being stressed out by BSG to being grossed out by Red Dwarf lol. It honestly is a low point in Series 5 where they pushed the limits of what was allowed even then. I agree that Low Rimmer could've been a different part of his subconscious.

Tom Mclean

I'm still new to your channel and this is why I joined I love this show so much and so nice to see you enjoying it just like I did when I was young.

Susan K Dailey Photography

Definitely, and Rob Grant has an interesting explanation for it - in the years since he left the show he's come to believe that Rimmer is probably ace, which could explain how his interest in women seems like an act.

Geraint Harrison

Completely agree with you at the end and I’m happy for you to speak your mind when it comes to these topics because you’re some of the most level headed people I’ve seen on social media if that makes sense, you’re not too conservative nor enshrine these reactions with outrage when jokes of a poor nature that were written in an age without internet and more interpersonal relationships rear their heads. However I’m glad to see things called out that need it. Great reaction as always gals.

John Wayne

I thought it was a pretty obvious reference Hellraiser

Richard Moss

Low Rimmer tortures people. That is his actual vice.

Blower

The dark(ish) humour doesn't appeal to everyone. It's not the strongest episode but I've always liked it and found it funny. If ya not got the stomach for the creepy bits then I guess ya not gonna be having much fun with this one! Btw if ya not from the 80's / 90's then ya prolly not gonna get what they were portraying Rimmer to be. He was portrayed as a hardcore dominatrix who was almost certainly bisexual - with characteristics of what was perceived at the time as the somewhat dark side of sex (BDSM, sadomasochism etc)......i did laugh a bit when ya thought the style was goth - it's way past goth! lol To me, back when this aired in the early 90's, i found it hilarious (and still do tbh) to see Rimmer being portrayed in such a outlandish way as normally he is someone who is usually so prim and proper, by the book and boring as hell.....even if it is all very creepy.

pbaker

The subtitle should have read ‘you guys are two lettuces short of an allotment’. Aaaannyway, this is definitely the least good episode of series five but series five is considered one of the strongest series so definitely good stuff in there.

pbaker

I remember in the 1992 fan magazine a letter said ‘I don’t find things like spider eating funny’. As an 11 year old at the time I’m surprised how it didn’t bother me that much.

Nolan

Sittin' down two watch this with a Twix bar. Very fitting. Hope it doesn't take after the episode.

J

I've always really liked this episode but it wasn't until now that I realized it was my least favorite episode of series 5. That shows how strong series 5 is (the best series for me). No issues for me about content in this or any episode, especially considering it is primarily a comedy but people should feel free to express any thoughts they wish.

Sebastian Bodine

This episode is usually regarded as one of the weakest because of the one-note bits, but it's still highly quotable. "Look out! I'm gonna kill you!" "Plus you almost killed me three times!" and that bit where Rimmer selfishness when Cat and Lister have 7 minutes of oxygen left before realizing he's 4 minutes left at the beginning is still really good. Another episode where the core concept is a miss, but most of it is elevated by our boys from the Dwarf.

Sebastian Bodine

TOS would have a similar idea for the teleporter to make a good/evil versions of a character, but it was more effective because was good or evil was more subjective. It might have helped this episode's staying power if they did go that route. But not to worry, for next episode keeps up the high standard that we're used to.

Nolan

I guess the defense for some of the "Low" side portrayals as evil was the lack of regard for consent in any of them?

Carlos Hernandez

I'm aware of the episode you're referring too but that technically it doesn't count. I kinda prefer what Red Dwarf did with the machine going haywire, destroying the entire ship and making two copies of it and the crew. If that happened to the Enterprise what would that be like and yes I know that stuff like alternate universes and mirror images exist but still the Red Dwarf version seems like one of the things Patrick Stewart had praised the show for

Firefly24601

Kat and Paula reacted to Gravity Falls a while ago. The reactions are here on Patreon if you want to watch. Paula is re-watching it with her partner right now.

gobmob2000

I think you guys are reading too much into it, I don't think it was supposed to be represent their sexuality but rather their hedonism, they where pursuing only what gives them pleasure rather then acting more holistically. Which is why you also saw the "good guys" and they where just as awful but in a different way. It was one of those yin and yang episodes, everything about balance. Its fine to be sexual, just don't only be sexual.

John Veitch

There are occasional moments in Red Dwarf where there's a subtle shift and I'm not watching the series/world I've become immersed in, but I'm just watching a generically "nasty" 80s/90s sitcom. These include some of the scenes of Lister and the "low" crew and, curiously, the Cat Priest sequence in "Waiting for God" (maybe it's Noel Coleman's over the top performance?).

John Veitch

There are a lot of points where the subtitles make mistakes. However, it was thanks to the subtitles that I finally understood Rimmer was singing his own name, like he was a crowd of cheering fans, in that scene at the beginning of "Queeg". I had always thought he was singing "Remove! Remove!", as in "get that skutter out of here".

John Veitch

I've actually been playing around with the idea of writing a fanfic which explores the "high" and "low" sides of the characters in more depth than this episode does.

paul

I remembered this as being a good one, but it wasn't quite as good as I remembered. The violence felt a bit Home Alone (specifically the kettle and the spider) and it all felt a bit cartoony. I would have been 10 or 11 when this came out, so it would have appealed to me at the time. Maybe it's just me, but I always understood the low Rimmer to be a fairly direct reference to Frank 'n' Furter in Rocky Horror, who is bisexual, the way he's dressed, the way he enters the scene.

Brodie Vickers

If you can’t appreciate dark humour, you’re not going to love this one.

paul

Well said.

paul

Is the triplicator designed to make good and bad copies or is it glitched? They react as though they expected to get three normal strawberries. If it's designed to make good and bad copies, then maybe its idea of good and bad reflects the attitudes of the boffins that made it... I think one of the points the writers are making is questioning if the highs are all good (they're gullible and boring) and the lows all bad (are horror films and hedonism bad).

David Shadwell

He doesn't get credited so, yes not a guest cast, but Jake Abrahams (who played the alternative Lister in The Inquisitor) does double up as Lister in a couple of shots - it is Jake falling out of the locker at the end.

paul

Oh interesting, didn't know that! Bit like Donna doubling up as Kochanski in Stasis Leak.

David Shadwell

I think the issue with some of the portrayals is the old enemy, time again. So they have to use short-hand to mark out the extreme differences between the 9 characters. So what you end up with is clumsy caricatures that can easily end up offending. Holly is just a head, so how do you make her stand out as a low? Just flip her visuals into a dark haired, dark eyed (replacing the vibrant red lipstick) seductress. It's a short-cut playing on stereotypes and the social-norms perceived by the writers. This ultimately is going to offend people unfortunately as I imagine it never even crossed their minds. How would it be done differently today? Not sure you can portray someone as a 'low' without offending someone as that is just a matter of the writers perception. Maybe stick a MAGA baseball cap on Holly's head? Make her a Hedge Fund manager? Similar for Rimmer. My feeling is that he is just the flip of our very sexually conservative Rimmer so is basically someone who is up for anything. But that is not a bad thing, it is just someone's sexual preference. I hope we have moved on from the 'kink' shaming that seemed to be around, especially in the tabloids. As a comedy, they obviously just went for the lowest common denominator and dressed him up in something totally out there and made his performance totally out there. Which is understandable for a comedy of only 25 minutes but, obviously in the real world, can give a lot of offence to a vast number of people. Maybe if they had played on just specific areas for Rimmer and Lister it might have worked better. Low Lister is very much a psychopath in this, and was very much in charge of the killing (the 3rd Red Dwarf novel, The Last Human, takes a look at that in a very brutal way). So what could they do with Rimmer. A sexual predator is not exactly a great look for a comedy so maybe going for someone who likes to humiliate and make people fail? Hard to write in in a 25 minutes run-time. So, yeah, his character, while getting some laughs, is not a comfortable re-watch. And finally...... I think what this was maybe supposed to make people think about is what really lies deep down in our psyches'. Are we honest about how we feel deep down inside. Those times we have done that tiny fist-pump in our minds when someone we don't like fails. Those times we have been cruel to someone without thinking. The envious thoughts. The dark thoughts. Who are we really if they were made manifest? And the answer is..... We all have them but we have our High's, our Angels, to balance them out. They quickly silence them with reason and logic and empathy. We are human and have are failings but are aware and strive to be better. As do Lister, Rimmer and Kryten (and possibly Cat but then he has such a great arse which has given the world pleasure and how do you improve on that). They may have their failings (and Kryten was only half-way through his list on Rimmer) but they are still our Boys From the Dwarf. Gosh this turned into a long one......

Blower

Besides which it was not homophobia - Rimmer was being portrayed as a dominatrix who was probably bisexual....i'm not sure how some people have missed the whole dominatrix BDSM thing, what with the studded leather bondage, dog collar and a giant whip!

Travis Boyle

Spock's last scene in that episode is pretty f'd up. I know it was episode 5 but it seems so out of character for him.

Jess C.

I know that I and some other fans have theorized was that the Lows represented aspects of the characters that each disliked the most about themselves/were most afraid or ashamed of. It would then make sense, if you read Rimmer as a closeted/repressed gay man (as some do) that the things he hates most about himself/the things he is most afraid of are those desires.

Travis Boyle

I was also like Kat about reaction videos but then got hooked on reactions from people reacting to music/music videos. They were short and fun. Then started watching reactions to movies and TV shows. I think one thing that gets people to watch reaction videos is the anticipation of waiting to see how someone reacts to a shocking, cool, or funny moment you know is coming up. For the TNG reactions it was probably Kat seeing moments like Locutus or Tasha Yar in Yesterday's Enterprise. Other good reactions by The Gals that spring to mind is Paula with Holoship and Kat seeing Gates McFadden's name returned to the opening credits in Season 3. I also agree with the person who said about your channel it is like seeing a TV show for the first time again. Lastly I have also really enjoyed the reactions to shows that are new to both of you like TOS, Red Dwarf, and BSG.

Katrine Myra

I'm with Kat (and Paula - I think you both mention it): The joy of reactions, for me, is seeing someone else discover something I myself enjoy. For me, Gallifrey Gals was an instant follow and almost immediate Patreon membership, because I could see that you seemed to enjoy the same things about Red Dwarf that I did. It's not that I want or need a reactor to agree with me, but it's a perspective thing? Your interests and what you notice and care about in a show/episode align with my own, which makes your content interesting to me. When you disagree, I understand WHY you disagree, and I can engage with it. And on that note, I really enjoyed this reaction. You're not wrong in that the whole high/low concept doesn't really work when you think about it too much, and I believe this particular script went through some rewrites, so it all got a little muddied. The Highs are all very similar, while the Lows are VERY different, and seem to be specifically catered to each character. None of which make sense in my opinion - though as a cat owner, Low Cat might be an exception. :p I'll get to Low Rimmer in a second, but for me, Low Lister is the one that makes the least sense. I feel like Grant/Naylor realized this, and that the whole conversation Lister has with the Lows is them trying to convince themselves and the audience. Yes, everyone has a dark side, but pulling the legs off insects and torturing your friends really does not seem like the sort of thing a young Lister might do. I'm not saying he's not flawed, but those aren't the flaws he has! It's a weird choice. And why is he a cowboy?! Oh boy, Low Rimmer. Now... Rimmer is an interesting character, as has been mentioned a lot. Though he's unique in a lot of ways, he also does represent the stereotype of a public (as in private/boarding) school, middle class/military family man, who is extremelly repressed, sexually and otherwise. This stereotype is rooted in truth, as public schools were generally sex seggeragated, and young boys 100% would have sex with one another, while at the same time, actual romantic feelings between boys was seen as wrong and bad. Add to this the heternormativity of a conservative environment etc. etc. Oh, and because corporeal punishment was very much a thing in these environments, a lot of folks developed some interesting kinks as a result, too. So... it all comes together. The show does play into this stereotype with Rimmer A LOT, as y'all have pointed out. Do I think they deliberately wrote him as gay? No, not at all. Do I think they deliberately wrote him as sexually confused and repressed? 10000% All of which is to say - I don't think the intention was to show homosexuality and kink as wrong, but more that this is a side of Rimmer that he is repressing. Of course, it comes off as "lol, kinky gay man in girly clothes" and does work as a joke on that level too. (Meanwhile, I had forgotten that High Rimmer and High Lister literally declare their love for one another, which warms my shipping heart.)

Travis Boyle

I personally liked this episode. Still love the "dump their bodies into space/boys from the Dwarf" scene. Also like rusty Kryten for evil Kryten. Probably because I'm a sucker for the TOS episode Mirror, Mirror. The other TOS episode similar to this was The Enemy Within when Kirk gets split into two a good and a evil version by the transporter. Parts haven't aged well and you Gals would probably hate the episode. Another fantastic one was Star Trek Enterprise's 2 mirror universe episodes.

John Veitch

I can see young Lister as someone who would play "light hearted" pranks on someone without realising the actual harm they would cause. The sadistic glee with which Kryten says "watched him buuuurn!" probably doesn't reflect young Lister's own feelings at the time.

John Veitch

Mainly Spock's infamous "interesting qualities" line.

Wagoo

Even to the point of him being a member of the "love celibacy society" for a time. I don't think there are any obvious signs at him being gay, but definitely his sexual side is repressed and pushed into the back of his psyche.. so I have no problem with it bursting forth free as a sexually abusive dominatrix on the "low" ship (from base Rimmer's perspective at least.. it would go there) Also note Kryten commenting on the horror movies they find.. those could be owned by low Kryten.. as base Kryten is the one making those categorizations etc.

Jess C.

It has also come up during one of the quarantine commentaries that creator Rob Grant believes that Rimmer is asexual, and all his talk of sexual exploits etc is posturing, so... complicated relationship with sex/his own sexuality seem part and parcel for the character.
