Another CLASSIC Gallifrey Gals reaction intro!! 💯

Stephen Wray

45:03 I've got 42:55 on my DVD

Time Lord

Unfortunately some timings will be a little off depending on where everyone is getting their episodes from. Hopefully it should still be able to match up okay! It's also why I've made sure to leave a partially blurred image to help realign if it gets off kilter at any point

Locoturbo

So glad to see you guys on this journey!!

Stephen A

Really well worth watching at least the first episodes (also available as an edited movie I think) of the original Battlestar. You could do it at any time, it doesn't spoiler anything because it's very different. I love the whole series but its after the opening that they have to make a series out of a tiny budget and you see the same special effect over and it doesn't get far in its arc. The thing I miss about the original is that it designed as a Biblical epic and you see that in the tone, themes and the music. They just didn't have the budget and the new version's more grounded tone meant they were never going to go that direction.

Ray Ward

The original BSG was lighter in tone - because it was a prime-time network show - but not by a lot. It was more shiny and clean, but the issues being dealt with were the same. That was the first season. After that, it devolved into pew-pew, family sci-fi crap. I would recommend watching the original season and then stopping. FYI, there are a number of homages to the original show in this version, including use of the theme tune - which is epic, you should watch the opening credits on YouTube - as well as the original "toasters", being left overs from the original Cylon War. And, of course, Richard Hatch who played Apollo on the original show plays a different character in this show.

Stephen A

Ah but that's nothing without the Patrick Macnee opening monologue. As a kid that gave chills and still my favourite part of the whole show.

Derek Orr

Ugh god no, there is no point at all in watching the original just as they are starting the series

Derek Orr

There was only 1 season

Mike Connaghan

"scan the ship"??? What is this? Sci-fi??

Mike Connaghan

I hope at some point you'll get a chance to see at least a bit of the 1978-9 series. Presumably a very long way off.

Mike Connaghan

I wrote this just before I got to the point where you mentioned the series in the video. Coincidence? More or less, yes.

Ray Ward

There was the "Galactica 1980" follow up which ran for 10 episodes.

Stephen Wray

I just keep pausing for a bit with scene cuts till you catch up

Derek Orr

It actually seemed like you guys were watching a version at a different frame rate or something. I had to keep pausing my copy (Apple TV/iTunes)

DopeGhoti

Just imagine the folks that came into this without having seen the miniseries first. The "previously on" helped I'm sure but wow, what an opening for a series.

Chris (darkwater)

So, if we're supposed to drink any time Kat goes "gay as hell" for Starbuck... we should all just get a saline IV going cause we'll need it.

Data Cable

Ron Moore is on record saying they wanted to make it explicitly clear that there were live civilians on the Olympic Carrier, but the network (SciFi) wouldn't allow it, because it would have made the "hero" characters look like cold-blooded murderers. Leaving it ambiguous was just enough to split that hair. Originally, there were no plans to follow up with Helo on Caprica. but an off-hand comment from some network or studio executive wondering what happened to him planted the seed. Moore credits the strength of Tahmoh Penikett's performance for inspiring that entire story line.

Mark Ten

I hope the blonde & Gaius do have a toaster child. The Red Dwarf's toaster... This show need a constant influx of nice hot scrummy toast!

Azure_Sentry

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this but I feel like it'd be cool if you did like a quick recap of your thoughts in this first episode (and maybe the miniseries) on of the characters. Either just at the end of the series or at the end of each season if you felt so compelled. As with most shows I feel like some initial impressions of characters are spot on and other may change radically and it would be cool to look back on evolutions in thoughts on characters that might not even change so much episode to episode but have long arcs over season(s).

Mark Ten

The original series was a combination of Star Wars & Exodus. Adama was Moses, leading his people to a new home, promised to them by The Lords of Kobol. A bright & shining planet called Earth. There was a lot of Egyptian iconography thrown in so you were supposed to think of Pharaohs in space. Like Star Wars, you were supposed to ignore the grimmer reality of total war as long as the battles were cool and they didnt kill off the main characters or anyone you really liked. Starbuck was Han Solo, a lovable rogue. Gaius was older and a complete bastid (no real motivation for being a traitor) but he looked evil and that was enough. Apollo had a heroic chin and that was enough. For some reason the kid Boxy had a robotic dog. They were supposed to be cute... I was mostly annoyed when they were on screen. Fox tried to sue Universal because Galactica supposedly ripped off Star Wars. Universal said Fox ripped R2D2 off of Silent Runnings & didnt Flash Gordon do the whole space thing first...? And the Viper battles were just WWII air combat moves redesigned? Effects wizard Dykstra had left Lucas' ILM after some conflict and started his own effects co. which produced the pilot... Lucas sued & was counter sued. There were lawsuits over merchandising (Dont get me started about the kids who died or were hurt choking on pellets from Galactica toy guns!) . The various legal actions lasted then the original series or the 80's sequel. Lucas wabnted to produce a Star Wars TV series but Galactica was in the way. In the end, no one was satisfied (except the lawyers). The original case was thrown out of court and the others tit for tat pretty much died. With no clear court decision, no one is sure who stole what from whom.

Travis Boyle

Oh right. The reason they cancelled the rocket shooting Boba Fett figure

Drake

i love the show :) the god thing is always a bit strange because well the humans have the Lords of Kobol so the cylons basicly came up with the "one god" themself.

Drake

the original show was such a dick festival xD no female characters and "military above all" this show has fantasticly brought in the presiden in the old show thats just a bunch of seniors who make the most stupid ideas making the military look so much smarter then the gouverment ... typical 70s 80s thing having the military look like the only thing we can rely on i have to say the old show was much lighter but also ... not a very deep or even good show ... it was a nice action flick for 3pm while doing ur dishes

Drake

lets be honest star wars did steal from "valerion" and everyone stole from Perry Rhodan xD it still blows my mind that the longest running space opera / scifi of all time 1961-ongoing (novellas) stopped translating into ENGLISH 1979 but to this day still gets translated in so many other languages expect english xD i mean it solds over 2 billion copies i never understood why in english it didnt succeed xD

Nolan

I think this was one of, if not the first show Bear McCreary ever composed on. And he knocks it outta the park. And they never answered why 33 minutes. Also, the reason you recognized Boomer's new ECO/Co-pilot is because it's Sam Witwer, pre-voicing Maul in Clone Wars, before "Being Human" just an ickle baby.

Chris Bordeman

I just realized you guys have never reacted to Firefly. WTFFF????

Nicole Mazza

Congrats to Kat on the sobriety. I also come from a line of addicts/alcoholics (several of my ancestors even ran bars I've been learning through genealogy research -- fun!) and, in a lucid moment when I noticed I was going in that direction around the age of 23/24, I stopped drinking in fear of ending up like those family members. At almost 52, I admittedly do occasionally have a small drink here and there, but it's usually once every few years and never to excess (like maybe a glass of wine with a meal VERY rarely). Though honestly I'm mostly just not even interested in drinking alcohol any more. Just more interested in breaking generational curses than falling into all that darkness. So, I really feel you.

Nicole Mazza

Yeah, the Cylons are pretty hardcore, fundamentalist monotheists. It's a big part of why they hate the humans, who are polytheistic and, more importantly, believe in a different religion than they do (which is sadly the basis of far too many religious wars).

Nicole Mazza

Also, I haven't watched the behind the scenes stuff for the series for a long time, but IIRC, the actors (especially for Starbuck and Apollo) sleep-deprived themselves in a very method-acting way to play their character's sleep deprivation more convincingly.

Wade Wallenstein

Now that is an awesome reaction! Love that you enjoy the quick bits of what's going to happen in the episode since it really hooks you. I'm nearing the end of Season 3 with funnylilgal and she always looks away during that lol. There are a few connections to the `78 original with the characters of Commander Adama, Apollo, Starbuck, Tigh, Boomer and of course Baltar. The main theme also shows up a few times.

Mordredd

Such an intense episode, I love that you loved it :D on watching the original '78 Galactica... you dont miss anything if you miss it. it was waaay more upbeat and goodies win every week so it would make an interesting counterpoint. perhaps you could fit in the '78 mini-series only as a breather between season 1 and 2 or something. Seriously you will give yourselves PTSD if you watch every season back to back without pause. oh I do remember there's a 1980's attempted revival with super kids in it. Do not watch. It is your duty to destroy any copies of this for the sake of humanity ;)

Andrew Nguyen

Echoing a lot of other comments that despite the same premise, '78 Galactica had a very different vibe to this version. It was more triumphant and less moral ambiguity. If you do decide to check it out, it may be interesting to compare the overall social/political environments these shows came out of. Cold War good guy vs bad guy narratives in the 70's/80's as opposed the moral quagmires we witnessed in the post 9/11 years. Isn't Sci-Fi great?

JXTN

Great first episode, great followup to the miniseries. And the Gaius/Six stuff wierds out everybody, haha. As partially demonstrated in this episode, many episode intros contain spoilers (minor this time, but can be quite significant)! There are lists somewhere of which ones to close your eyes for, I'd recommend finding one! I saw when you got the cylon model structure confused that you put in a text edit that you knew that was incorrect, so I'd guess you already know how it actually is, but just in case, what we know at this point in the show: 12 models, #1 -> #12. Blonde is model #6, and there are unknown (or limitless?) numbers of copies of #6. Sharon (Boomer) is a specific #, the guy at Ragnar was a specific #, the car salesman looking guy was another #. So at this point in the show we know 4 of 12 models, each of which has unknown (or limitless) copies. I'd assume 33 minutes is how long is takes the signal the cylons are recieving to reach them + calculate the jump. Though it being exactly 33:00 everytime with no flex puts that in doubt. It's fine if you want to watch DS9 on your own Kat, but it would be cool to share somewhere your opinions on highlights as you go, there's lots we'd love to hear your thoughts on!

Funny That

The Rowan J Coleman retrospective on the original show covers (without spoilers for Moore's BSG) the quality that was there in the original tv movie, and then how it just got tougher from there to keep the high standards. And was glad that they worked in references to the old show in the remake. Paying homage without having to tie the new show to the old, helped the new show to be it's own thing and means the old BSG is still there to watch without being spoiled.

Funny That

And this week's best reaction shot goes to Chief Tyrol, as it will in most any episode where he turns up. Possibly the smartest thing this show got right all the way along was to never waste a deep bench of quality actors.

Bret Hart

I've been waiting until I can watch along to start BSG, but after seeing Kat's tweet about their sobriety I wanted to watch the intro. I'm just over 2 years alcohol free, and I totally get how people react to the age thing. I didn't really start drinking until I was in my 40s (I'm 55 now) and didn't develop a problem until 2017. So people who've known me a long time tend to dismiss the idea that I'm an alcoholic. With Kat it's because they were only 22 when they went sober. Everyone's journey is different, and we're all doing the best we can. Thanks Kat for sharing, and thanks Paula for the amazing friend you are to them.

Stephen Kronfeld

Since you two like Ronald D. Moore, i'm wondering if you would like For All Mankind. It's a great show.

Ben Chan

Re: The original show, I would suggest watching the original movie that started the old show - perhaps after you've finished the first season. (I think it was a feature film that was split into the first two episodes of the tv show?) That would be enough to show you which characters got rebooted into the new show, see how they handled the destruction of the 12 colonies and getting a sense of the tone.

Carrie Schwent

I know that you are up to episode 10 by the time I'm watching this, but I urge you to watch till the end of the end credits (it's not very long i promise), there is a funny little animation featuring the two showrunners and they are hysterical!

Brina Blue

As a teen watching this show the year after Star Wars came out, all I could hear was the voice of Steed, one of my favorite characters from the BBC show The Avengers (not Marvel) that also aired in the US in both prime time and then reruns when I saw it! As much as I loved all Sci Fi, that voice always pulled me out of the scene. I was lucky enough to see Patrick McNee live in the play Sleuth in Danbury Connecticut.

Brina Blue

Hello GG! I'm just checking in as I catch up with the full length reactions! 33 is already pretty dark, but wanna know something that got cut? When Billy and the President are talking about the 300 person miscount, originally the reason for a lot that count was going to be because of people taking the unalive option in the face of the bleak future. It's good that the episode stayed all Happy Fun though!

AzoriusMage

You guys are so emotional I love it
