Chris (darkwater)

Oh yeah!! Subed for this show alone. Another gal (funnylilgal) is closing in on the final season. Seems fitting that I start all over with some more gals.. your reactions to the first part were some of the most animated and intense I've seen. Can't wait to see what this next part (and the rest of the show) is like for you. :D

emma_universe

I’ve been looking forward to this all week!!!

Dreameroutthere

Just a heads up. There are extended cuts of the season / episodes 2x10 : Pegasus, 2x20 : Lay Down Your Burdens Part 2, 3x09 : Unfinished Business, 4x00 : Razor, 4x12 : A Disquiet Follows My Soul, 4x18 : Islanded in a Stream of Stars, and the final 3 part episode 4x19 - 4x21 Daybreak. I ALWAYS recommend the extended cuts over the broadcast cuts. Hope you enjoy BSG.

Nolan

Boxey was a character in the original series, lol. Also, Six told Baltar that "There are 12 models, I'm number Six." so we know Baltar is someone with that knowledge. But also, because of the whole "who's a Cylon, anyone could be a Cylon" angle, don't look up characters or actors or follow any them on social media, cause you WILL get spoiled.

Nolan

Don't forget about the two Webisode series either! "The Resistance" between seasons 2 & 3 and "Face of the Enemy" between 4x11 and 4x12. Each one with their episodes combined comes to about a half hour of run time.

Todd “Canuck” Schmuck

This should be a fun(also sad, exciting, funny, heartbreaking, and definitely thought provoking)ride. Didn’t want to comment until part 2 once the full premise/setup was done just to be safe on spoilers. Thought you’d enjoy the story of how Ronald D Moore got the job of show runner/head writer. When DS9 ended, he went to join the writing team on Voyager, but left after just a few months. While he waited until Voyager ended to give the full reasons for leaving, he opened up about it in an extended interview. He said while he respected the writers, it drove him nuts that they always wanted to play it safe/never take risks, especially after DS9’s approach. The interviewer asked him if he’d been able to do whatever he wanted, how would he have approached writing for Voyager. The long and detailed answer he gave(concerning actually feeling the dire nature of trying to survive on your own, limited supplies with actual stakes and cost, etc) caught the eye of an executive at universal who was trying to get a reboot of battlestarG off the ground. I’d post a link to the interview, but I have to dig it up(I think it was IGN, but I’d have to find the right one. He gave another interview after he got the job heading up BSG’s writing team). I could go on about all the things I love with this show(music, acting, realism…), but I don’t want this comment to turn into a full novel of a spiel. Hope you ladies enjoy the ride. 😁👍

Chris Neumann

Oh, you know what makes that ending worse is that for those of us watching when it came out, it was a YEAR before the first season. We were left twisting in the air for ages (and this was back when a full year between seasons was unheard of)

Chris (darkwater)

So the Cylons know how to fight a Battlestar, there's really nothing suspicious about that. Galactica herself was used during the last war 40 years before (not a spoiler, there was exposition early in the first part). So it would be basic tactics to target the bays. It would remove their ability to recover fighters and possibly even disable the ship to an extent. It doesn't mean anyone leaked plans.

Chris (darkwater)

Since you mentioned DS9... I would love to see them watch it. :)

Chris Neumann

Boxey's father is also the diplomat at the very start of the miniseries, you can see his picture on the desk.

Chris (darkwater)

I'm pretty sure everyone was upset over the Boomer reveal. Also, I think this was the first time I saw Tahmoh Penikett (Helo) and thought he was great too.

Chris Neumann

Baltar is such a garbage human, but that's what make shim such a great character to watch because it lets him get away with so much crap AND the writers can do so much to him and you're like "good, serves him right." His urge for self-preservation also makes him dig deeper holes for himself. Example from this episode, he figures out Doral is a Cylon but can't say how hw knows, so he makes up that shit about the hair samples, but now that means he has to build a Cylon detector despite having no idea how to do it!

Derek Orr

Boxy (and most of the other character names) are from the original Battlestar show from the 1970s. But the show is absolutely not just a re boot or sequel...it's very much a complete re imaging of the show, very different story and background universe.

Colin 3of5

That is not going to happen. Paula has watched DS9 and is not fond of the series so Paula and Kat have decided to give it a miss.

John

"This show don't play." You summed it up right there. Buckle up. You're in for a ride. Do be careful of spoilers. The show has an overall story, so a spoiler can ruin an entire season or more, not just one episode.

John

Please be careful naming future episodes before they get to them. Amy knew how to find Rory by reading only the chapter titles in River's book. The gals are clever.

John

If anything, they knew how to fight Galactica better than the rest of the fleet. It would be like a modern day aircraft carrier/battleship going up against a World War II era ship. Even without being vulnerable to their network hacks, I'm sure they know exactly what Galactica's capabilities and weaknesses are.

Lizbeth Marcs

Hold on to your hats for the first episode of the series proper. IMHO, it's probably one of the BEST episodes of any scifi series ever. It grabs you by the throat and just. doesn't. let. go. As for EJO (Adama), he better be good at those speeches. He's won an Oscar, an Emmy, and multiple Golden Globes. Mary McDonnell (Laura Roslin) has been nominated for multiple Oscars, multiple Golden Globes, and at least one Emmy. Those of us who remember the original show from 1978 (I caught it on syndication long after it had been cancelled by ABC) were floored that the reboot got actors of that caliber. Not to mention the level of writing, and the soundtrack by composer Bear McCreary (he did the soundtrack for all episodes), it's insane how something so outstanding was based on a series that was originally an attempt to cash in on the "Star Wars" craze when it came out.

JXTN

I've other reactors confused about the setting and 12 colonies before, so just want to make sure it's clear: The 12 colonies are 12 seperate planets in a very complicated star system, NOT multiple colonies on a single planet. Caprica City is the capital of the planet/colony Caprica. The other colonies like Gemonon, Aerelon, etc are their own planets in the same solar system. As was mentioned toward the end of this episode, each planet was supposedly settled by one of the 12 tribes that came from Kobol, and supposedly a 13th tribe of Kobol went to Earth. Have fun! That's all you really need, but if you want to know the details, see this map: https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/galactica/images/8/80/Map-of-battlestar-galactica-8217-s-12-colonies_1.png Laughed when you talked about liking that it has religion and sci-fi (Trek) normally doesn't, when Ronald Moore also wrote DS9, which was chock FULL of religion, haha. Seems like Moore's thing. Excited for this series, and for you two. :)

Mike Connaghan

I am pleased but not surprised to be right about what made Paula mad. The second part of my prophesy will take some time to unfold.

Chris Devlin

So glad you're watching BSG. It goes to some dark places from time to time but it's exceptionally well made. Definitely one to be wary of spoilers for though.

Mark Ten

I honestly forgot how good this series was, thanks for reminding me. Im totally here for the rewatch with you. I remember the original 1978 series as kind of being heavy handed-silly cheese but with cool fighting. Thats not what this is. A lot of the original religion in the series comes from Mormonism, Glen Larson is a member of the Later-day Saints. Thanks again!

Drake

as gaius is the only one who knows about the fact that there are 12 cylons i would guess he wrote the note ? not sure about that but he knows at least from episode 1. also one fact to remember is just because two cylons look the same it doesnt mean they are the same person. there can be alot different characters who all look the same but are very different individuals, the character is saved and reborn every time they die so we dont know how many different of them there are

Thontor

As far as we know so far the only person to know that there are 12 cylon models is Gaius. The character Tricia Helfer plays told him in Part 1 of the miniseries. "There are twelve models, I'm number six." I guess we are supposed to assume that Gaius is the one that left the note for Commander Adama. So anyone played by Tricia Helfer is a Number Six. We don't know the numbers for the other cylons but we know of 4 models so far. Number Six Aaron Doral (tour guide) Leoben (guy they found on Ragnar station) and of course, Boomer

Data Cable

When I saw this on original broadcast, I somehow missed Baltar and Head Six's discussion of framing Doral, and therefore didn't get the punch line at the end that Gaius was only accidentally right. Oh, and just to short-circuit any Marina-Sirtis-like revelations later on, Jamie Bamber (Apollo) is British. He was on a podcast with James Callis (Baltar) and I had trouble telling their voices apart.

Nolan

Not Leoben, but Doral.

Chris Neumann

Huh, no one's ever brought that up before.

Chris Neumann

Thank you, I thought I got that wrong.

Chris Neumann

I remember back in the day there being some confusion/debate if the Centurions and Raiders counted as models or not.

Nicole Mazza

I ABSOLUTELY ADORE Bear McCreary's music for this show! He's done the soundtracks to other shows (such as doing the current Percy Jackson TV show), but his use of drums in BSG is sublime! <3

Nicole Mazza

Also, Apollo/Starbuck is still 100% my OTP ship!

Nicole Mazza

So weird watching this with Nicki Clyne (who plays Callie). I loved her character back in the day, but now all I think of when I see Nicki is her involvement with the whole Keith Raniere/NXIVM stuff (she even is still one of his supporters, even after he went to prison).

Wade Wallenstein

I've been subbed to her as well! I will rewatch this series as often as possible because it's that great :)

Josef Schiltz

It's the same with me and Smallville.

Wade Wallenstein

This is going to be an AWESOME reaction! Your jaw is going to be dropping so much lol

Locoturbo

Great! Spoiler-free answers to your questions (based on what I knew / you should know at this point) - the cylon with Dr. Baltar, at his house prior to the attack, quote: "There are 12 cylon models. I'm number 6." So she told Baltar, and that is where he & we get that information. I assumed he passed Adama that information, although was it in secret? If not, how would he explain knowing it? Wasn't sure. And, Baltar had used some reasoning to single out Doril as a cylon; he pointed out he was an outsider who had full access. But we have to imagine there was also luck involved.

tal goren

Baltar behaves so obviously slimy that I really can't understand how anyone trust him with anything. I guess that in-universe, all his suspicious intonations and hesitation, are supposed to be less blatant than they are in the show. Oh an Paula is right, IMDB is terrible now, that why I check those kind of stuff in Wikipedia these days.

Does What It Do

I’m surprised nobody mentioned this Easter egg. But towards the end of the episode you can see The Enterprise at the top right of the screen in one of the big fleet scenes.

Todd “Canuck” Schmuck

They’re taking a break from Star Trek after seven seasons of TNG(understandable. Don’t want to burn out on it). I’d heard Paula didn’t enjoy it, although I don’t know how much she’s watched of it. Obviously it’s their choice what they decide to watch, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping they eventually decided to give it a chance someday(sounds like Paula didn’t like what she saw of battlestar originally, but is giving that a chance). Just don’t want to see people getting angry or pushy about it(besides being rude, it’s a good way to ensure they never want to watch). If they ever do take the plunge, I know I’ll be a top tier donator for it(something I couldn’t have afforded 4 years ago).

Mordredd

I forgot how much I loved this show back in the day. Damn I cant believe it's 20 years old already !?! I even remember the 1970's original from when I was a kid. I now feel Officially Old!

Nicole Mazza

Same! I was such a big fan of the original show back when I was a kid! Of course, the new/reimagined series blew that out of the water -- it was soooo good!

Roy J.

Ronald D Moore's Deep Space Nine influence is a lot stronger is this second part of the mini series. He took several of his ideas for DS9 and dialed them up to 11 for BSG. There's the strong presence of religion as you've already mentioned (in DS9 it's the Bajoran faith that is prevalent throughout the show). The 'evil' aliens/empire/faction determined to wipe out humanity (in DS9 it's a faction that works like an anti-Federation and brings them to their knees essentially). There's the human looking Cylons and you only know some of them (in DS9 there's 'doppelganger' infiltrators meant to sabotage and destabilize). In BSG those parts have been distilled into a purer form. And it works really well.

Roy J.

I did mention those easter eggs in the comments of the 1st part of the series 😇 I forgot how clearly you can see it's the Enterprise from ToS.

Azure_Sentry

Fully agree that the losses are terrible on Galactica and immediate (though still a relatively small number of the crew) but they pale to insignificance to the losses in the Colonies. I don't think the miniseries (to avoid any possible spoilers) gives any population numbers but even if we assume the colonies are of a similar population to Earth (and it seems there would be more people in total from what they've shown us of Caprica alone) a full nuclear attack on 12 colonies would be billions or tens of billions dead. It is honestly beyond comprehension, more than have died in every war man has ever fought in all of history put together. It... just goes beyond any imagining of loss and they do try to grab the crew's initial reactions to the news pretty well.

Carrie Schwent

Another great show that really showcases Bear McCreary's amazing score is Outlander, which is another amazing show with amazing writing/acting (the books it's based on are also even more amazing). I think they might enjoy that series too perhaps.

David T

I second the recommendation for Outlander. Not only is Bear McCreary the composer, but BSG show runner Ronald D. Moore is also the showrunner for Outlander, and it's obvious. Like BSG, the episodes deal with "real people" emotions and events, not sci-fi cartoon subjects, even though the show deals with the issue of an intelligent and resourceful woman who suddenly finds herself transported to a different time period. There are also elements of Doctor Who's timey wimey stuff in Outlander. Bear McCreary is at his best in that series because he gets to show off his affinity and talent with Scottish-based music (which is only used in BSG for Adama and Lee's relationship).
