I'm so glad you finally got to meet one of my favorite characters to watch, Tom Zarek. His role and portrayal by Richard Hatch is an amazing addition to the BSG ensemble, and it only gets better from here!

Richard Hatch (RIP) played Apollo in the original 1978 BSG series. He was the only cast member from that series who spoke positively about the re-imagining, which is why he was offered a role in the new series. He really does an amazing job with Tom Zarek.

Lee "finally picked his side" in diverging from both his father and the president's "sides", instead following his own conscience (to the annoyance of his father.) Zarek is one of my favorite characters, but definitely a contentious one. The actor's introduction was seen as an olive branch to the original BSG fandom, many of whom were very salty about Katee being cast as Starbuck. As far as time codes for the episode - I'm watching on DVD. Sometimes the timing goes off by a couple seconds from yours, and I adjust by pausing one or the other. Not a big deal!

Adama is the Dad of the remaining fleet whereas Roslin is the mother figure

I'm also watching via DVD and have the same experience as you. It's going much better than I expected.

I remember the big gulp very well. Early 90's baby y'all!

I think the prisoner situation and the general tension between Roslin and Adama are good examples of how inexperienced the govt folks that have survived really have at governing. They're a lot of people who never expected to be at the level they are now, at least not so quickly. Adama commanded a single ship and Roslin was in charge of a singular department and not one of the "premier" ones. Now they're thrust into running the fleeing survivors of an entire society and this show really lays out how inexperienced those people would be. I think it results in some "dumb" policy decisions and paths but ones that are quite realistic in that context. And as always, they put things like democracy and prisoners and all that in an extreme situation of in the extreme, would you still believe those things? Is your position absolute or is there a point you would suspend democracy or force people to be basically slaves? Really great as a convo. Enjoying you both discussing it!!

Every time I see Richard Hatch (RIP), I think of a cool experience I had with him back at DragonCon in 2006 or so. So, I'm a Hellenic Polytheist (I worship the Greek Gods) and the night before I'd done a ritual to the god Apollo and basically had asked him for a sign if he'd heard my prayer. The next day, I was working my way through the crowds of the old Dealer's Room, basically being pushed along through the mass of people (it was a Saturday afternoon, so it was chaos). In the small walkway between the dealer's tables, there was one lane of people going one way and another going the opposite way. Anyway, at one point something happened behind me and the crowd lurched, suddenly pushing people forward into my back, which pushed me sideways into a man walking in the opposite direction. I basically slammed right into his chest. I looked up at him, apologizing profusely (he said 'No problem' or something) and then quickly moved on, as the crowd started moving again. Soon after, I also started to hear some excitement in the crowd around me, with several people saying 'OMG, it's Richard Hatch!'. And then it clicked in my brain -- the guy I'd run into was Richard Hatch! (Who -- as Apollo on the original Battlestar Galatica -- was one of first crushes!) And then a few seconds later, I started laughing to myself, as I made the connection with Apollo the character and Apollo the god. Basically, I'd asked for a sign and that was a great one! The gods definitely have a sense of humor! ❤️

Richard Hatch showing up in the new BSG was a HUGE thing. My jaw literally dropped the first time I saw this episode and was blown away by his portrayal of Tom Zarek.

Speaking of a little uplift at the end of each episode, there’s actually a little comedic animation after the end credits. A new one for each episode. Nothing to do with the show’s plot, just the two show runners having … ummm … disagreements.

Hugo Fitzpatrick

The original Apollo turning up as an antagonist character was such a handing of the baton, brilliant casting.

Carrie Schwent

I love these little animations!! They are always hysterical and very rarely repeat. So clever!

Ben Chan

Not to throw shade at the original series, but this was the first time I thought of Richard Hatch as a good actor!
