The kick off to series 6! What a hell of an episode to do just that

Friendly reminder that today Red Dwarf will be switching over to watch-along as per our previous announcement and post. It will be exactly the same as our BSG and latest New Who reactions where there will be a countdown, a time code throughout the episode, and a blurred image throughout to help with any resyncing that may need to happen. From what we've been told, Red Dwarf is available for free in the UK on iplayer and for others it is on Britbox or for FREE on TUBI.  Thank you all for the support and understanding while we transition over to this. We wanna make sure we can keep sticking around and not have the man come for us!

So excited! This is the series for which they won an Emmy. It's probably the most polished series production-wise, with excellent plots for each episode, well done all round, but sadly the last on that Rob Grant would write for, and it will ne noticable from series 7 onwards. Fair warning. In other news, it took me a full 2 minutes to realise you glas were sitting in the same room.😅 But, um, what's going on with the edit? The show is blurred out and muted? Did I miss something?

Kieran B

Ah forgot you were going to watch along reactions, no more laying in bed watching for me, but completely understand

Tony Mingoia

I think I missed a memo. A little more effort required to watch now, but can do. I understand though. It happens.

Blower

Good job i can have RD on one monitor, and you gals on another otherwise this'd be a deal breaker! Seems to be working just fine tho, and at least this way i don't have you at 500dB more than the show :D

Blower

Future reactions of Red Dwarf are now on 'watch along' - ya will need to find a way to watch the episode from another source and sync it up with the reaction video. PITA i know, but it's only way to keep the channel going and avoiding copyright strikes, esp on YT. Not sure how the copyright is enforced on Patreon tho - i still think having a download option for Patreon's with full reaction and video would be a better move, perhaps on higher tiers if needs be to pay for the extra work required for a seperate edit.

I'm okay with the new format and understand why you need to do things this way! Some fun facts for this episode - While Craig can play the guitar, he had an arm double for that scene - Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music! Also, poor Craig got that kissing scene with the psiren as a sort of punishment for moaning about a lack of love interests for Lister!

Mark Ten

Hey, we saw Kochanski again!

John Veitch

And Rob and Doug probably realised at this point that Ms Grogan's talents were... limited.

John Veitch

A ZX81 was an early personal computer that was always "crashing"... geddit?

Bruce Bromley

I believe it is Vimeo, not Patreon that would enforce copyright and strike them. It has happened before.

Raven Stromdans

This was a fun way for them to shake up the series without wildly changing the premise or structure. I do feel like there's some pretty apparent progression of the Flanderization of each of the crew even just in the establishing opening of the series, but otherwise, it was great fun. Great to see CP Grogan back as Kochanski too. Let's see what's in here indeed, eh Gallifrey Gals? Keep Calm and Smeg on! Me and Mr. Flibble will be here smoking kippers over the smoldering corpses of psirens until the next episodes.

Bret Hart

Great episode and reaction! The Psiren "killed" right before Kochanski appears was played by Anita Dobson, Mrs Flood in The Church on Ruby Road.

MCT

This was the first full episode I ever watched back when I was something like 11 years old and I only understood about 1/3 of the jokes. Always fun when rewatching shows you first saw as a child as more and more of the jokes and references make more sense to you as you get older. I think series six is RD at it's peak in terms of consistency of writing (ironic considering how much of it was getting rewritten at the last minute, sometimes while it was being recorded iirc), production, look etc. I think this is the series where Kryten looks best as well.

Bruce Bromley

Sorry to see Holly go. With Kryten and Cat there providing the exposition and the stupidity, Holly became redundant. Expect more running gags this series as well. Always great to see you two filming together instead of from across the Neiborhood. 😁

Wade Wallenstein

Such a wonderful reaction! Some trivia: Prior to the scripts of Series VI being written the model of Red Dwarf had fallen off a shelf and had broken which gave Rob Grant and Doug Naylor the idea to have the guys in Starbug searching for it.

Jim

all the episodes are available on BBC player for those of you in UK for everyone else (cough) vpn (cough)

John Veitch

Paula, I couldn't help noticing you joking around that you were upset with Kat when really you weren't. I don't think there's as big a cultural divide between you and the makers of Red Dwarf than you think there is. :-)

Paul Flux

As well as Anita Dobson, the guest stars include Jenny Agutter as Professor Mamet, who played Jessica in Logans Run and Nurse Alex Price in An American Werewolf In London.

KG

I have it playing with Tubi and it's odd how the show on your screen keeps getting thought scenes quicker and pulling ahead. Did Britbox cut the shows down?

Brodie Vickers

Jenny Agutter was the guest star of the week this episode! Known for The Railway Children, An American Werewolf in London, Logan's Run, Walkabout, and much more.

Paul Flux

In the spaceship graveyard when they enter the asteroid field are several familiar looking ships. There's the escape shuttle from Alien, an Eagle Transporter from Space 1999, and even a Klingon cruiser from, you know, another of the Gals favourite shows!

Geraint Harrison

Funny you mention the doctor who stuff here... not a spoiler, more behind the scenes prop and costume usage which Paula might appreciate; Kryten's armour is always changing over seasons, however at a certain point in future seasons he's wearing parts of a familar DW enemy's armour. See if you can spot it!

Tony Mingoia

Yes, it's happened to a few of my reactors. To not even be able to get a reaction video on Vimeo shows how fierce the BBC can be with their copyrighted material. Most of my other reactors just upload those reactions to a cloud service like Google Drive or OneDrive, rather than the two window watch-along solution. It's ok for me, I have all the episodes not only on DVD, but on hard drive just a click away, but it might be a pain for some.

John Veitch

Although this episode in particular has remnants of the s5 horror, you can see a shift in s6 to a more gags-per-minute style of writing, suspected to be because some of the fans didn't think that s5 was funny enough. This sometimes means characters are dropping snarky comments when the situation doesn't really warrant it, and even becoming interchangeable one-liner machines.

Bruce Bromley

Noticed that as well. Nothing seemed to be cut. May have to do with time compression due to what streaming service was used. Never could get it to sync for a minute or so, but a quick pause on either Vimeo or Tubi fixed it.

Its amazing how the crew has evolved from S1 to S6. Lister is now legitigimately capable, working with Kryten on the garbage cannon, monitoring their supplies and recognising the increasing cabin temperature as indicative of the actual Psiren illusion. He immediately volunteers to go into danger to recover Starbug's leg, and confidently recognises his own heroism - he may still be (very) gross, but he is not lazy, physically or intellectually, and has developed a confidence boost as a result. Cat is now a phenomenal pilot with supernatural nasal senses, surviving as part of this tight-knit crew in close quarters. His freedom to roam gone, his thousands of clothes lost with Red Dwarf, and he has still found his place. Credit to him for questioning the Psiren illusion, which is something the younger Cat would have never have done. Rimmer demonstrates some actual leadership, calling all stop to assess the psiren threat, and leading the briefing (albeit still being petty). He cleverly helps devise the tests to catch-out Psiren Lister, and sees through both the illusions aimed at Cat and Lister. He also does join Lister and Cat in looking for Kryten, despite his cowardice. Kryten has been alone for 200 years and is not in the least disturbed by this - compared to his millenia of loneliness aboard the Nova 5, this was nothing. He is the caretaker of the crew, rescuer, and without him, they'd have all died several times over. Compared to the nervous mechanoid we first met in S2/S3, this Kryten is confident, heroic, smug, and the effective leader of them all, while being savvy enough to give the appearance of deferring to Rimmer. Even when crushed into a cube, he still saves the day, once again. These characters have been on a long journey to take them to this point, a quest for survival aboard an ancient and knackered shuttlecraft, trying to survive together against the viciousness of outer space. Their incarnations from S1 would have been dead before this episode even ended. Its been a great character evolution.

Nick Hobbs

Am I missing something here? You can see a better reaction on YouTube? It's not blurred on there

DoubleDutchess

I understand the reason for this change, but as I view these on my phone I’m probably going to have to stop watching along with you gals 😢

John Veitch

Also, Rimmer has stopped resenting when Kryten says they should launch a scouter. ;-)

Travis Boyle

It's now watch along for copyright reasons.

A while back some fans came up with the "Law of Rimmer's Uniform" == Rimmer gets a new uniform, the tone of Red Dwarf changes. S1 / S2: Rimmer's khaki uniform; the Odd Couple / Isolation years S3 /S4: Rimmer's Captain Emerald uniform; TNG-ish comic romp through space S5: Rimmer's red uniform; the year of psychological horror And now you're on S6 (I will not spoil future seasons): Rimmer's quilted jacket and velour trousers (you can see in the opening credits already that the color will change); you've sort of already guessed the theme Basically, every time Rimmer's uniform changes, just know that it signals a complete revamp in Red Dwarf's premise. Since you already know about the break-up between Naylor and Grant, I don't think it ever came out what happened. No one seems to know what caused Grant to walk away. Even Naylor claims that he's mystified as to what happened. What's worse, both of them were writing another show called "The 10-Percenters" for the BBC, and Grant basically bailed in the middle of that, leaving Naylor to write all of those episodes himself. I know some fans love crapping on Naylor from a great height, but in all honesty it's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Yes, the tone changes, and yes S7 and S8 are rough (unlike most people here, I prefer S8 over S7, but that's because the character dynamics between Rimmer and Lister are hilarious), but the Dave run (starting with mini-series and ending with the movie) are really entertaining watches with some interesting concepts. Are the later seasons as good as the run of S5 / S6 episodes? No. But I think the Dave seasons hold up to S3 and S4.

Jesse Sharp

I suppose this had to happen eventually, but watch along formats make me big sad. I'll consider giving it a shot and checking it out on Tubi.... UPDATE: I'm on vacation at the moment, so I can't access Red Dwarf on Tubi until I get back to the States as its not available on Tubi in my vacationing region, however I was extremely impressed with how quick and easy it was to register with Tubi using my existing Google account.... so the idea of watch along format is more promising than it ever has been before.

Lizbeth Marcs

Doctor Who isn't the only BBC sci fi show represented in the costuming. I recently found out that Rimmer's badge that he's worn season S3 comes from "HItch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy."

Lizbeth Marcs

I found syncing against the DVDs to be a perfect match with the watch-along. Where they might get into a little bit of trouble is with S7 because there are some extended episodes, and with the mini-series since there are two different versions (three separate episodes versus the episodes cut together to make a movie). They'll have to tell people which version they're watching.

Wagoo

It was more like *Rob* doesn't get along.. Doug was baffled by the whole affair.. and still is as far as anyone knows

paul

Loving the "gals from the dwarf" thing 🤣

Dieter Maggs

Series VI in my opinion is the best as there's so many genre's and new things introduced, so happy you're both enjoying it so much :)

David Shadwell

Anita Dobson is of course Brian Mays wife and they did ask him if he could do the arms for the guitar playing but either wasn't available or didn't feel he would be able to do it justice. Also, the crazy astro was played by Richard Ridings who has been in lots but is now more famous for being the voice of Daddy Pig in Peppa Pig in the UK.

David Shadwell

I do remember seeing in one of the documentaries, whether on TV or on DVD, that Rob did say that he was fed up of all the extra stuff that was happening concerning Red Dwarf. Basically all the meetings around approving T-shirt designs, merchandise, etc was a real drag for him. Just wanted to concentrate on the writing. An excuse maybe? Or just another reason he wanted to walk away?

Josef Schiltz

I can't watch with a blurred out image. I work digitally with a screen all day as an artist with intense focus. Watched a video with a centrally placed blurred out image just gives me too much eyestrain. It's a shame.

Josef Schiltz

Same here. I may have to quit as I need to care more for my eyes after working with a screen for digital art all day. The blurring is a killer eye ache territory.

Lizbeth Marcs

I vote excuse. The issue with Rob Grant, though, is he walked away *decades* ago, and left Doug Naylor pretty high and dry, and not just on Red Dwarf. Naylor was the one that kept Red Dwarf going, and considering that the behind-the-scenes people involved with making the show to this day were there during the BBC run, it says to me that Naylor was, at minimum, a fairly good boss (or at least he wasn't "the problem"). Grant's and Paul Jackson's post-2020 attempted hostile takeover of Grant Naylor Productions and the Red Dwarf franchise (and the resulting lawsuit) was not a good look for either Grant or Jackson. Yes, they ended up settling it out of court and Naylor was able to retain the TV rights, but because of Grant's attempt to wrest Red Dwarf away from the guy who's been keeping it afloat all these years, they couldn't make any additional series or movies until the issue was settled in late 2023.

Darryl Glynn

I had a (Sinclair) ZX81 personal computer. It crashed more times than Starbug.

tal goren

I just put my version of the episode in a window on the blurred image. that way everything look normal to me,

Travis Boyle

A really good episode. So many great jokes. Loading up Rimmer is a favourite. Also loved your reactions to Lister making out with the Psiren. Lol. Probably the grossest reference of Lister being a slob is the thought of him straining cigarette/cigar bits out of his beer in the morning. 🤮 Oh fun opening before the show, Paula still mad at Kat's Christmas betrayal. 😂

Sebastian Bodine

I absolutely loved you gals reacting to seeing what Lister is really kissing! XD

Josef Schiltz

A bit of a squeeze on a laptop but it sort of worked okay.

Katrine Myra

Craig was on WHAT?! OMG, I have to check that out...!

Mab7373822

I don't think pausing will work under the new watch-along approach as it will put the viewers out of sync with the gals.
