Looking forward to catching up on this, have either of you seen the Expanse?

Forget the ACTUAL Newsies movie. Kat should do a reaction to Paula's acting out the movie! 😆

Mike Connaghan

I'm not saying that rebranding as the Tongue Girls does not have issues, I am just saying it is an option.

Jonathan

Every time I rewatch BSG I'm blown away by how good the sets, props, costumes are. The water tank set, the flight suits, the guns, the phones. It all looks AMAZING, and the sound design is the cherry on top.

Time Lord

I (Kat) have not and I'm pretty sure Paula hasn't either. It's definitely one of those ones we've thought about because it's been recommended quite a bit!

Kieran B

It’s ludicrously good. The world-building, the writing, the performances… just brilliant. I’m pretty certain you’d both really enjoy it. Hopefully one to consider in future.

Mike Connaghan

Well, whatever you want. Which is neither of these. Unless it is.

Karl Ward

This was a great episode, loved, as usual, your reaction. It did remind me of the Star Trek TNG episode "The Drumhead" and the quote from it from Picard - "The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably." Influenced, I think by the paranoia in the cold war and the McCarthy witch hunts, and this by the fallout from 9/11. Art mirrors life and in turn life mirrors art. "All of this has all happened before. All of this will happen again". (Actually inspired by a quote from Peter Pan by JM Barrie!)

Roller-coaster? You're still in the queue for the roller-coaster?

My take on the Sergeant is that she was offended that Adama didn't include her in the loop about human-form Cylons from the beginning, or at least from the time of the water tank explosion. She's head of security, was actually in charge of investigating the water sabotage, and believes she should have been informed of that vital information right away-- and I'd say rightly so. When she started to let the new investigation go to her head, her resentment about that turned to suspicion of Adama himself. On the question of what HeadSix (as the fans called her back in the day) is up to: remember it's unresolved what she really is. Back in the pilot, she told Baltar she'd downloaded her consciousness into his brain, while Baltar countered that she was just a hallucination born of his fear and stress. The show never addressed which of them was right. So is she an aspect of Baltar's own mind, reflecting his knowledge that his own survival depends on finding and eliminating Cylon agents on board, pushing against the more timid and frightened side of his mind? Or is she a real Cyclon, carrying out some mission for them? Or is she a real Cylon but one now following her own agenda? The question of what the Cylons want with Helo pales in comparison to the swirling mysteries around HeadSix, what she is and what she's doing.

Terrell Kirkman

This is what this show wants, to make everyone paranoid. Is she a Cylon? Is he a Cylon? Are they a Cylon? Are you?!? Am I?!? It's a good thing Kat doesn't have trust issues, amiright?

IMO The Expanse" is hands down THE best "hard" space scifi series ever made. It's the scifi show physicists and astronauts watch. I love Trek for it's moral messages, BSG for it's grittiness and Farscape for it's wacky weirdness, but over all I consider the expanse to be the best all around space scfi story ever told.

Kieran B

Strongly agree, and without spoiling anything the Expanse has a bit if everything else too - the morality (albeit without the absolutism), the grittiness, weirdness - and incredible, complex characters

Jonathan

100% about Sergeant Hadrian. I think Chief is absolutely right, SHE is in charge of internal security so unless she finds someone to blame, it comes back to her. I think she's terrified that all this has happened on her watch and desperate to make it someone else's fault.

John

"Make your choice." Edward James Olmos is such a presence! He commands more attention with a whisper than most people would get with a bullhorn.

Jeremy

Ron Moore did a commentary podcast for every episode of BSG as they aired. I think he mentioned that he was heavily inspired by Drumhead. He actually wrote on TNG and DS9.

Nolan

We can also appreciate that EJO did NOT go for an applebox and still carried authority in that wardroom scene. Also, weird how my DVD eps have the "Previously on Battlestar Galactica" part then launches into the "The Cylons were created by man [...] And they have a plan." Then launched into the recap clips, but also had Helo calling out Sharon's name, which your copy didn't do any of that? Mine also always starts with the Universal logo. Mine also happens to be the North American version.

Josh McPherson

I originally thought the flashes during the opening were a touch spoilery in the first season - but eventually I felt they were clever and show you just enough to make you think you know which direction the episode will go, only to feel by the end of the episode they've intentionally misdirected you with the opening.

Wade Wallenstein

I'm loving your perspective on BSG so far! You've come up with some theories I haven't heard of before and they're awesome :) I also love how much gravitas EJO brings as Commander Adama. He can do so much with just a look and quiet tone which adds even more realism to the role.

John

Same as my DVD copy. I think later seasons match up better with the streaming services with one exception - there is at least one two-part episode that streaming services list as one episode, so the episode numbers are off after that ep for the rest of the season. That's in Season 3, IIRC.

When I first watched this episode (a few months ago, in preparation for the gals reaction), I assumed Hadrian noticed the investigation seemed to point toward the Chief and Boomer, but also knew it was probably just because they were covering for their affair. In the beginning she was just trying to get somebody to admit to that so she could cross them off the list, but as more and more people continued to lie about it, she got angry that people are letting something this trivial interfere with a serious investigation, so she Brought Adama for questioning to shed light about the whole thing.

David Brown

At first, I thought the Gallifrey Gals' description for the episode: "WHAT IS HE DOING HERE??????? And also, who the freak let him in?" was about Kat finally realizing that Crashdown is Sam Witwer. "Kenobi. KENOBIIIII!"
