I believe this was originally planned to be the 3rd ep, I'll tell you why they changed it next week...just in case of potential spoilers. Also, you might have to write this down, if you’re still watching ahead, when you get to the last ep of Series 10 make sure you watch to the very, very…VERY End of the episode for…reasons.

Matthew Hanlon

I think they’ve got the O/G Unit as they’re scavengers & raiders. Probably best not to think about it, just like not thinking about why the Ewoks have human clothes in RotJ…

The continuity does get a bit better from time to time with this show...but there will still definitely be moments where they yeet continuity out the nearest airlock!

Cojuancidence

call back to 1st polymorph and when they met the despair squid :D

John Veitch

They do presumably have some kind of space travel, since they made that skull-carved asteroid thing. Maybe the OG unit would have looked less out of place if it had been dustier and grimier looking, more in keeping with the village aesthetic.

Troy Convers

Plot callbacks and actual continuity? You're gonna love S7 & S8; they've got that coming out of the wazoo!

Raven Stromdans

I think this episode may actually have the largest span of call backs of any bog standard episode of Red Dwarf: You've got the Polymorph and the first reference to GELFs from Series 3, Ace Rimmer from Series 4 and Duane Dibbley from Series 5. It's like a perfect storm of continuity references for long time Dwarfers. Like Kat, I think my favorite element of the episode is the substance of Lister's "change of plans". "LEG IT!" Fantastic to see you back after a short break and with such a fun episode! Keep Calm and Smeg on, Gallifrey Gals! Me and Mr. Flibble will be here smoking a kipper until...wait a minute...YOU'RE NOT MR. FLIBBLE! GAH! ~Transmission Terminated~

As a UK Bigfoot researcher I can confirm Paula's facts as correct..WOW Sasquatch chat & a RD episode in one...does life get any better!!🤣👏😂

I love the confirmation that if you extract all the negativity in Rimmer, you get a (very slightly distorted) Ace. If he hadn't been so utterly broken by his horrible childhood and the resulting self-loathing and self-sabotage of his own happiness, he would be a selfless and brave hero, willing to throw himself onto grenades for his friends. I see it as a call back to Thanks for the Memory - when Lister gave Rimmer memories of a relationship - which changed Rimmer into a happier person with some positivity and self-worth that slightly outweighed his trauma. Going one step further in this episode and actually removing all the awfulness that is in him, he becomes who he was always meant to be, Arnold Ace Rimmer. He is so awful at times, but somehow Chris Barrie manages to imbue the character in a way that elicits so much sympathy from the audience.

This and the the first episode were a result of Craig Charles complaining last series about Rimmer getting a love interest. He pointed out to Grant and Naylor that he's supposed to be the romantic lead and he should get a love interest. So they said sure, fine, whatever you want! Yes now the boys are interacting with Gelf's, next series they have them round for dinner parties, or maybe that was a dream?

David Tully

If you're interested in knowing more about the creation of the theme tune, Tongued Tied and a certain song in an upcoming series, there is a great DVD extra called Howard Goodall - Settling the Score - the composer talks about all his work on Red Dwarf - it's 30 minutes long. The man has done so many great theme tunes and musical scores over the years.

Sebastian Bodine

I always think of "Ace" in this episode as Rimmer's imitation of Ace since he still doesn't have the knowledge or proper planning, so he's still plagued with Rimmer's incompetence but gets Ace's level of selflessness. As we see with his initial plan, it's not entirely the best result.

Sebastian Bodine

I also love Kryten's outburst "IT'S THE WALL!" as one of my favorite bits of comic paranoia!

Josef Schiltz

Kryten: "Cat's anomalous spatial disturbance wavelength detection follicles are working flat out this episode." Cat: pause - "Ma what?" Kryten: "Your nose hairs, sir!" Cat: "Oh those!"

David Shadwell

You could maybe tie in the Doug Naylor Red Dwarf Novel, The Last Human as to give the Gelf's here a bit more back story and why they are out here as traders/scavengers. Created by humans as simple menial labour for a specific task that went very wrong. Now stranded in this part of deep space with whatever they could salvage from The Mayflower with various groups of Gelf living on different planetoids and planets. My head canon is that all of the Gelf's they have encountered are from The Mayflower (so Camille was in an escape vessel from it, the ship in DNA was as well but had the few human survivors and the Psirens were another group). Maybe even the simulants too.

David Shadwell

Sad that you are coming to the end of what is, for me, prime Red Dwarf but appreciating the reactions to series 6. This and the next feel a bit by numbers to me with the jokes starting to wear a bit thin when binge watching (Cat Fashion Joke: Tick. Rimmer incorrect Space Corps Directive: Tick. Cat Nasal Joke: Tick). But the physical comedy and lines still land well (LEEGGGGIIIIIT!) and the pathos does return for the series finale at least. Will be here for some or all of series 7 as there is still some fine stuff amongst the uncertainty of finding it's feet again. Then will probably crawl under my duvet, put my fingers in my ears and go La la la la la until series 8 is over so I can pretend it never happened (maybe read the comments if the Gals get through it to see how they responded to some pretty grim..... actions).

I disagree with the "Lister running away is good" argument, although I agree that forcing intimacy is obviously bad. The problem is that technically Lister entered into a trade agreement for the Oxygen unit, which he broke by running away. I'm not saying that he should not be allowed to leave, but he ought to return the oxygen unit otherwise he is in the wrong and nothing more then a thief. The situation is not that she forced himself on him, its that he broke his agreement. He agreed to marry her in exchange for the oxygen unit, and his plan was always to deceive them and steel the oxygen unit, this is fraud. I'm sorry but whatever way you analyse this, Lister was in the wrong.

tal goren

Exactly, it wasn't just that he "wasn't in the mood", he was never going to be in the mood and knew it from the moment he saw the bride. Although, you could argue that demanding the marriage in the first place, was a form of coercion, and therefore the fraud was the only way for Lister to protect himself from people who wouldn't take no for an answer.

Kieran B

The GELF chief was played by a well known TV chef Ainsley Harriott

gobmob2000

It wasn't coercion because it was trade, they did not demand marriage or else, they demanded marriage for the oxygen unit in trade and they did not hinder Lister in any way from refusing said trade, therefore there was no coercion on the part of the Gelf. The oxygen unit was their property, and therefore they where just in excluding whoever they wanted and make whatever demands they want for it in trade.

Sorry am i the only person that this video won't load for. All the other videos load fine but this one just displays a vimeo link that is for the thumbnail when you click it

What I should have also added was that for Red Dwarf Night on the 10th anniversary they did a couple of parodies of TV show where the cast / fans took part. Ainsley’s show Can’t Cook Won’t Cook was one of them (as Can’t Smeg Won’t Smeg) - and University Challenge was Universe Challenge where fans took on the cast in a trivia competition. They’re both on YouTube and could make fun Patreon extras when you’ve finished the series maybe?

I am SO behind! Series V is one of my favorites too - I go back and forth on VI. Rimmerworld is probably my favorite out of them all, so I'm heading over to that one now!
