We're honestly surprised it took them this long to do something like that with Rimmer's character. A whole new world of opportunities!

Another great episode! Lots of gags, some surprises, and a hauntingly sophisticated antagonist. Shame about the outfit 😄

The chopsticks were not the high point of prop creation for this show. Fun, but not robust.

Raven Stromdans

This episode is kind of fascinating in that it sets up Rimmer for having a physical presence in the universe again and also contains one of the most low-key continuity errors of the series (which I suspect you'll be inundated with in the comments, so I won't bother actually pointing out - I'm honestly more curious if you picked up on it on your own). Of course, Red Dwarf has always played a bit fast and loose with continuity so it doesn't much matter. Really looking forward to you reactions to the next few episodes - they're some of the best received and arguably well written episodes of the show's run, but I'm super curious how you two will receive them some 30 years after their initial run. In the meantime, Keep Calm and Smeg On Gallifrey Gals! Me and Mr. Flibble will be here smoking a kipper with a side of space weevil until the next episode!

My favourite series 6 episode! I've always thought the dwarfers should've stayed with Legion, he was offering a pretty good deal

The reference to Quayle having a great mind is probably for the American Vice President Dan Quayle who embarrassed himself every time he opened his mouth. He was the late night hosts' favorite target. In a debate he compared himself to JFK (war hero & President) and the moderator replied to him "Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mind. Senator, you’re no Jack Kennedy.” Quayle just looked at him and had no response. Quayle had a number of other flubs that made him look stupid. These are actual quotes: "Republicans understand the importance of bondage between a mother and child." "I am not part of the problem. I am a Republican." "One word sums up probably the responsibility of any vice president, and that one word is 'to be prepared.'" What a waste it is to lose one's mind. Or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is."

One of my favorite episodes of all time!! The chopsticks and trying to knock out Rimmer are two really funny bits from this episode that I always look back on fondly. Also glad to report, I tried the tubi/watch-along-format and I can say that I really appreciate being able to control the volume of the show.

Cat seems to be taking the place of Deanna Troi in some respects in being a extrasensory bridge character.

Porpoise Power

I just realized that this episode, the "first" episode Rimmer has a physical body, they make an episode dedicated to physically hurting/humiliating him.

Lizbeth Marcs

There's something kind of hilarious about the fact that Red Dwarf gave the most cowardly character in the crew an indestructible body and more-than-human strength. It's like they short-circuited the Worf Effect (TM TV Tropes) by ensuring that the crew's "Worf" (aka Rimmer) absolutely, positively WILL NOT fight the baddie of the week and will, instead, have a humiliating panic attack under the closest table.

Series 1 and 2 are my favourite. The lonely hum of the ship, original Holly, the bunk bed arguments, better character development/interactions, Cat being more cat and not giving a crap about anyone and more purpose in the story. Don't get me wrong I love all of these too, but while it got a bigger budget and interesting monsters each week, it lost something in the process.

Wade Wallenstein

This was such a brilliant episode! Legion is a brilliant character and the comedy bits are the best.

Geraint Harrison

G-gook is intentional, it’s short for ‘gobbledygook” aka nonsense. They got tired of the technobabble, hence why everything is ‘-psi’

Paflad

I think that they're trying to steer clear of copyright issues, so while they're legally able to show the show on youtube because its edited, so you're only getting clips that fall under fair use/review rules, on here they're doing full length reactions so would basically be giving you the full episode which is a bit of a no-no. Of course i could be talking out of my you know what, but that's my understanding. I think they did a video explaining it all at some point.

Paflad

It's not the most sophisticated of gags, but I will never not crease at the entire Kryten trying to knock out Rimmer exchange. A thing of beauty.

Mab7373822

Its such a legitimately great science fiction idea, handled brilliantly. Kryten is a genius for solving the crisis in a really clever way. A favourite episode, this one.

Jonathan

Fun continuity error - back in "thanks for the memory" Rimmer mentions having Lister's memory of... having his appendix removed. They retconned the error in the books. Apparently Lister is the only person to have been born with TWO appendixes xD

Jonathan Giles

Show keeps getting better and better lol. You planning on finishing the entire series? Thanks

Brodie Vickers

The Rimmer salute will return, I guarantee! *New Orleans Cajun accent*

When i watched this era of RD live, i preferred seasons 4-6. However on rewatch over the years 1&2 are my favourite. I guess 1st time round you enjoyed the change in pace, silly humour, bigger budget sets and being out of the dwarf.

Time Lord

Paflad has it right on the money! When starting out on the channel we had some slight misinformation when it came to our full-length reactions and we've now realized we definitely need to switch over to watch along format on all of our shows. Like Paflad stated, when it comes to fair use/review rules and laws, we're able to show clips of the show on YouTube because it is edited down. - Kat

Time Lord

Sophisticated or not, that gag is 110% hilarious! - Kat

Nolan

Pretty sure this was the first episode I saw. At least the first one I remember seeing. That Blue Alert light bulb gag is a classic.

Paflad

As the wise old sage once said, keep talking with authority and you'll eventually be right about something. My day has come.

John Veitch

Fans can all agree that the first of Legion's creators Kryten names, Heidegger, is a reference to German philosopher Martin Heidegger (someone you might expect to appear on a list of "great minds") and the last, Quayle, is a reference to US politician Dan Quayle (who would have been well known at the time as someone you *wouldn't* - before Kryten makes it clear he's talking about people from a few centuries in our future and not anyone we would know about). Opinions vary, though, on who, if anyone, the middle two (Davro and Holder) are named after, whether recognising the names is important to getting the joke, and whether the joke works with those less obvious names in the middle of it.

John Veitch

Yeah, they almost make a joke out of how the Dwarfers (specifically Lister) are foolish to want to leave.

John Veitch

I have a feeling you might want to drop out at some points in s8. :-(

John Veitch

It's the first one I remember walking in on my parents seeing. I distinctly remember seeing Legion, and hearing his big dramatic speech - when I later heard about "Kryten, the android character" I assumed that's who he was.

Shaun Barnes

Me too! I was seven years old and walked in during the scene when Lister had his appendix removed. A year later, my mum was rewatching Better Than Life, and I walked in when Rimmer had his thumbs smashed with a hammer. It wasn’t until I was fourteen that I watched the entire show and finally got to see those scenes in context. Been a Dwarfer ever since 🤣

Travis Boyle

One of my favourite episodes of Red Dwarf. Such a great concept. Love the blue alert joke. Just the way Kryten turns around to look at the light makes me laugh. Then the zero g oral sex joke and changing the bulb and Rimmer's frustrations. Classic.

David Shadwell

Some of us were geeky enough to own the 'Step up to Red Alert' t-shirt!

I do agree that 6 feels a slight step down from series 5 but it was a hard target to hit. At the time, I loved this season as a 15 year old. It looked good, was funny and was endlessly quotable. During lock down, I did a Red Dwarf marathon with my wife and found 6 wasn't as good as I had previously found it. Still enjoyed it but not as much. Maybe because we were binge-watching a series I had previously only seen weekly, it felt a little repetitive. Apologies to the Americans out there, but the format seemed to be veering towards that of the standard sit-coms that flooded UK TV at the time. So you have a format that spreads the jokes/action between the cast a la Friends. A bit too formulaic in the way it is structured though not in the content (Friends would have been 100 times better if Rachael they were being terrorised by a Geneticially Engineered Life Form). So you get Cat's jokes about fashion in each ep. Rimmer and Kryten's exchanges around the Space Corp Directives. Time filled with some joke about the supply situation. It is still funny, the concepts are good but something just feels a little..... off? I think the US pilots had been done before this season so wonder if that had any impact on their thinking? Also, fast reaching the number of eps so it could be syndicated in the US as well. I think Doug was more keen on exploring the US options than Rob so wonder if this was another bone of contention in their relationship. Happy to be corrected if wrong.

PANCAKE day!!!! Anyone who understands why this is posted in a red dwarf reaction wins. 😂
