Those sharp, black mandibles close around my neck as Diligence lifts me into the air, and there is no question in my mind that he could cut through my throat as if it were nothing. A part of me wonders if I could survive it. I could probably program a bit of my mana to reach toward my head as it gets severed, with another trigger to activate one of Lily’s healing marks. That could work.

Weslin, may the long-dead gods bless his soul, even rushes closer, slamming his hand against Diligence’s side with all his strength, but the resulting burst of void energy goes nowhere. Morwag is moving his binding energy and reading up to join the fray, hell, even Savant is pulling out his Sword of Aeons, and Brichant is preparing to betray his Colony leader.

All of them find themselves unable to move as the Ruler releases the tiniest bit of his true presence. Though this is just an avatar, a projection, a vessel, or a clone, that power is terrifying. A use of telekinesis then takes hold, pinning everyone in place.

“Maybe I should destroy you this time,” the black ant says to me. “I am at the point where I wonder if bearing the backlash for killing an attendee would really be worse than whatever mess you will make in the future.”

The black mandibles move, cutting into my skin slightly and drawing a bit of blood from my neck. In his large compound eyes, I see hundreds of my reflections. Focusing on specific ones, I can clearly see my blank face as well as new scars. One near my ear, and another shorter one, sits at the corner of my lips. There are several more scarring the arm I used to craft that ridiculous dagger Lissandra now carries.

All of them refuse to heal, having formed when I started gathering black mana after the training. It is just a manifestation of the effort the training took on me, along with all that quick skill levelling. And I’m confident there will be more of them. Still, I’m happy I have a bit of hair on my head, thanks to my healing passive and one of Lily’s healing marks.

Unlike the boys, I endure the Ruler’s presence much better, and hundreds of my reflections smile tiredly.

“Dili, look, I’m tired,” I say. “Never in my life have I been so tired as I am now, but I have a feeling that if I close my eyes to rest, my mind will just burst in all directions and I won’t be able to gather it back.”

I reach up with one of my hands and touch the drop of blood on my neck, then the mandible. “Honestly, I feel like laughing manically, I feel like crying, and I feel like maybe I should just curl up and die. You know very well I won’t be able to stop you if you decide to kill me, so why do you hesitate?” I ask him curiously.

Instead of answering, the Ruler of Diligence just stares back at me.

The tense moment stretches for four more seconds, but I hardly find the energy to care.

And when I’m finally let go, I don’t even feel relief. Logically, I decide to keep the wound on my neck and not heal it, even stopping my natural regeneration. Against the rule based Diligence, it should help me with negotiations as a clear reminder of his lack of control.

This time, Ruby doesn’t tease the black ant, and she didn’t even try to stop him before. I mostly believe that if I were in true danger, she would interfere, but who knows?

“Explorer Rankings of Beyond reset once every thousand years,” the black ant begins to talk in that way he always does, without a mouth, yet with a voice sounding as if it’s coming directly from him. “Such a duration doesn’t allow the system to give rewards after the reset, as a high number of attendees would die long before receiving them, but rather based on the deepest First Dungeon floor reached. I don’t worry about the system taking it into consideration when you get a trait or Primary class, as these subsystems are more difficult to confuse. The problem is that at the end of the tutorial, you receive additional rewards based on your Beyond performance.”

As he stops talking, his words begin to sink in, and I start to understand his worry, and he continues. “People serving as Handlers in Beyond also have an opportunity to enter the First Dungeon, and at the end of their role as they are leaving Beyond, they receive additional rewards based on the performance of their wards, in addition to their own performance in the First Dungeon. There are Absolutes that were unable to reach the floor you currently hold in the rankings.”

“Won’t the Beyond system just consider their performance, recognise what happened, and just not give too good of a reward?” Ruby asks him from behind her table.

“It is possible, but it is also possible that it will take their level and the short amount of time since they awakened to the system into consideration and increase the rewards. You know very well that the Beyond subsystem isn’t perfectly connected to the main system, and that because of its structure and the closeness of the First Dungeon, it doesn’t share system calculations that well,” Diligence answers.

“Look, these rewards will happen after our tutorials are over, right? Or just as they end. Can’t you just say it won’t be your problem anymore then?” I suggest.

As the ant turns to me, it becomes obvious that he cannot or really does not want to. I’m no expert on ant expressions, but this much is clear.

Staring at me, he speaks again. “Then there is the fact that you helped the imitation, and together you made that ridiculous dagger. Another problem is what the imitation has done to that lynthari, and further, there is what she has done to the replica of the Sword of Aeons.” Diligence twitches and moves quickly in front of me in a way that turns his chitin legs into a blur.

His mandibles are once again dangerously close, as I hear, “There is Nyssa Volare, too. Because of you and the others here, she has left the sixth floor, where I thought she would spend the rest of her tutorial without making a mess. If you ever wonder, know that it was Kindness who told her where you and your friends might be.”

Confused, I look at Ruby. “What do I have to do with it?”

“She killed the Dhampir. So Dili is a bit annoyed,” the red-haired woman smiles and waves her hand, finally releasing the boys.

"Being in charge of a Beyond cycle is supposed to be a secondary responsibility. There are rules set to make everything simple and run smoothly, yet this cycle is anything but that," Diligence complains, moving away from me again. "The Absolute’s imitation cut the lynthari’s connection to the tutorial, so she is now fully seen as an Earth attendee. The system obviously reacted and made it impossible for it to be done again, so the imitation could not do it for herself, and she is still tied to the tutorial and cannot leave. Yet, I have no illusion that she intends to remain in her cage. I haven't fully seen through her and the One Winged’s preparations yet, but I’m starting to get an idea, and I’m seriously thinking of arming Wrath and sending him against them."

Ruby seems intrigued by this. Leaning back in the chair behind her old wooden table, she asks. "Do you think he would be enough?"

"Likely, especially if I were to give him Materia Armor. The problem remains that the 12th floor is spatially locked. Without the Main Defensive Array, it will be difficult to get there without your help, but you, for some incomprehensible reason, refuse to assist, even though you seem to dislike the idea of an imitation of your master going free."

"What can I say? Women are mysterious creatures. Am I right, boys?"

As she turns to them, Brichant nods quickly with a big smile. Weslin nods only once she meets his eyes, and Savant follows suit. Meanwhile, Morwag smiles at her and doesn't nod at all.

Before the demon becomes a splat against the floor, I interject. "That is out of our control as mere attendees, isn't it? I think we should be sent away so you guys can think it over and decide. As for me, I refuse any change to my rewards. I've decided I will gamble. Either the system will recognize me as a fraud, and I get no rewards for being on the 12th floor in the Explorer Rankings, or I will hit it big."

"Maybe we should just let them be, Diligence. It is as he said, he will receive the reward as the tutorial ends, so it is not our problem. Meanwhile, we can start working on a fix, or hell, we can vote on the full integration of the Beyond subsystem into the main system if you really want to," Ruby says.

I hadn't even noticed it until now, but Morwag is lying face down on the floor with his arms and legs spread wide, seemingly unable to move at all.

"So, where is Myrra? And Zant?" I ask.

I get no answer. Both of the Rulers ignore me, seemingly having a conversation in their thought accelerated space.

It must be a long one, as around two seconds pass before they seem to be finished.

Diligence looks my way one more time and apologizes to the others for holding them so rudely and excluding them from the conversation. Then, he leaves us alone with Ruby.

Morwag continues to lie on the ground as she steps away from her table and walks over him, stepping on his back as she goes. Something cracks, but no one says anything. Smiling, she stops in front of Savant, who looks at her with confusion, especially as she is now holding the Sword of Aeons that should be in his hand.

Looking at the blade of the beautiful sword, a replica of the greatest mana battery of Eladore, she flicks the metal with her nail. It lets out a clear, ringing tone. She observes it for a while longer with longing apparent on her face before handing it back to Savant. As if nothing happened, she passes by him and stops in front of me.

For a few moments, I return her gaze until she puts both of her hands on the sides of my face, holding me there to keep our eyes locked.

Ruby leans closer until our noses are almost touching and whispers, "There are many people showing interest in you, wanting to take you, place their marks on you, and implant themselves a deep memory on your path. But more than anything, it just makes me greedier."

She isn’t smiling at all, and her yellow eyes glow with a deep, fierce intensity.

"I didn't take you for the jealous type," I say, with a smile, just as she shakes my head.

When she lets go of me and begins to walk back toward her table, stepping on Morwag again as she does, she speaks louder, addressing everyone else as well. "I hate to disappoint you, but it seems that there will be no negotiations today. You can blame Diligence for summoning you here for nothing. Please forgive him, though, he has had a rough time lately with a dragon settling near his territory and all those troubles with the corporations."

Once seated, she waves her hand. I feel a sudden pull on my body as she calls out her goodbyes. "I dislike people who spread information that could identify me as Nathaniel’s handler, so keep that in mind, boys. And be careful with our dear, cute Nyssa. She seems to be really fired up, and Kindness gave her the coordinates of the location where you will likely appear."

In the next moment, we manifest on what I assume is the surface of Beyond. Morwag shouts something about a wench as I look around.

As I remember it from my first visit, the place looks unassuming and normal. I can’t quite tell what provides the light here; sunrays pierce through the clouds and patches of blue sky, making the surrounding area feel ordinary. There is grass, hills, rocks, and even some smaller trees.

The biggest difference is the pull I feel on my mana, which attempts to drag it beneath my feet and much lower into the First Dungeon. The gravity also feels heavier than when I first arrived, seemingly growing stronger the more mana I leak.

I get to examine this interesting concept, and we rest for a few hours without being interrupted by any monster, when a burst of kinetic energy explodes in the distance. The force is immense enough to make even Morwag shut up, and betrayer of the Colony Brichant, Weslin, and Savant all turn their attention toward it.

The technique is rough, but the power behind it is staggering. Every beat of her heart generates a gargantuan amount of kinetic energy that she directs like the stream of a jet engine. Her movement is uneven, but each burst carries her a huge distance, perfectly synced with her heartbeat.

She flies high in the air past us and slings around with incredible speed, entirely ignoring the crushing G-force such a turn creates, before crashing into the ground like a meteor. The impact sends up a massive explosion of rock, dirt, and grass.

I hear a soft cough, and Nyssa steps out from the dust cloud, waving her hand to clear the air in front of her.

The state of her clothes puts me on high alert. She is wearing no jacket, just a pale blue tank top, and her white pants are rolled up over her knees. She isn't even wearing boots.

"Nyssa," I say, my voice weary yet steady and confident. "I haven't gotten used to all the changes yet. I don't want to kill you by mistake."

Her pale red eyes seem even lighter than before. Her pale skin, white eyelashes, and short, uneven white horns contrast sharply with the black hair she has combed and tied back.

"I don't intend to kill any of you either, but if you look down on me, you will die," Nyssa says.

Her voice is calm, making it clear she has come to challenge all of us at once.

No one has the chance to complain.

The light falling from the sky intensifies, melting the ground as she turns it into her weapon. Then, she charges.

TFTC! Depending on how much Nat is holding back, being an unreliable narrator as he is, he will probably let the boys get stomped before going 1 v 1 with Nyssa.

Nemesis

Umm, did Ruby faceplant Morwag because he didn't agree with her? 😂

John Smith

That damn ant, holding up the boys for no reason. Didn’t even give them a reward for wasting their time

Budgie

Demons lmao

Little Watchmaker

"I don't want to kill you by mistake" ... Just how much has changed? 😮

frankie doerr

Wait she can turn light into a fucken weapon and lol it was only a matter of time til Nat got diligent to have a mental breakdown

Arnon Parenti

Our boi has Champion Level Skills and not even simple ones, but combos and primes, levels he got from just smacking together mana in ways Liss Liss showed him over a year of training montage, something even Absolutes and seems like even Dili will be jealous of.

PuNcT.

TFTC! Can't wait to see art of how nat looks right now

Arnon Parenti

Dili being jelly of Nate and Liss's relationship as Mana Daddy and Mana Mama is adorable.

tyhuko

Faceplant Dogeza!

Andrew

Thank you!

Mint

Sounds like that final reward might get Nat the reward of his dreams…. The legendary 6 active skill fusion. TFTC

Primo

Really curious at what grade Liss restored the sword of aeons, there is no way rulers like ruby will be admiring just a peak pristine item right?

David McCreight

I feel bad for Diligence. He and Nat are truly the only normal ones. I hope they end up unlikely allies, or even friends.

Thien T

Diligence wants to send Wrath to stop Liss? Can we get some F's in the chat for Lily's handler?

JTP

In addition, It's got a lot of sentimental value to Ruby.

Nemesis

Am I crazy, or was Nat flirting with Ruby there?

Arnon Parenti

I hope it produces something extraordinary like Thinking or Pondering, between focus, weaving, mana manipulation, lancing, anchoring and dancing, he deserves it.

Arnon Parenti

Don't forget it was Ruby's bf's sword, so even a mid pristine replica would be nostalgic for something she hasn't seen since leaving Elador.

Nemesis

If so, then I'm waiting for the day Dili complains about humanoids and their bizarre mating rituals

Nemesis

The hilarity will be that Wrath refuses to go. He's a might supremacist, not stupid 😉

Arnon Parenti

It's funny how Brichant's wettest dream of meeting Dili has been diluted by nate to becoming a nuisance he just wants to finish so he can move along with the plot.

Nemesis

I dont think there is any evidence that Ruby had a relationship with Tristan. She just probably has complex feelings because its a replica of the item that enabled the destruction of her homeworld

Isaac Lung

Can somebody explain this sentence. “Such a duration doesn’t allow the system to give rewards after the reset, as a high number of attendees would die long before receiving them, but rather based on the deepest First Dungeon floor reached.”

zoarian

It means that the system doesn't wait for a thousand years (till the rankings are finalised) to give out rewards. Instead, it gives them out to each attendee at the end of their Tutorial, based on what Beyond Floor they reached.

tyhuko

Hornless becoming Wrath for free would be such a meme

tyhuko

You get rewards immediately after the tutorial, instead of at the end of 1000 years quest

Isaac Lung

It doesn’t say within the sentence I quoted that the rewards are given out at the end of the tutorial though. I guess it would be clearer if it were instead edited to “such a duration doesn’t allow the system to give rewards after the reset, … , but rather at the conclusion of each attendee’s tutorial.”

tyhuko

I'm honestly surprised Nat didn't blame Envy for that entire situation, if he didn't give Liss the control over Beyond Array none of this would have happened. Guess he was too tired.

Nemesis

Absolutely! They were the victims here! If they had done their jobs properly the boys would never have been abducted. He just did what he had to in order to ensure they survived! 😋

Nemesis

Basically its explaining that even the System acknowledges that making attendees wait up to 1,000 years for rewards from the leader board reset is unreasonable. Many of the attendees will already be dead, and any rewards it might hand out would probably be useless to any but the most recent attendees. So it hands out rewards based on how deep you got, rather than your leader board ranking.

Nemesis

I have to ask, is your name real, or meant as a homophone for 'TNT'? 😁

Lance Beam

TFTC. The fight with Nyssa will give Nat a chance to showcase to us what he learned from Liss Liss. And where did that catgirl wind up, floor 13 and then straight to Japan??

ChildConsumerServices

Dont know why Morwag is complaining, some people would pay to be stepped on by powerful women

Memelord Steambath

Nyssa is the one who's ability is to make her body into a weapon? Or am I getting her confused

Thien T

Very perceptive of you. It's actually both :D

j km

Morwag is moving his binding energy and reading up to join the fray, - “readying”

Levi

Diligence: 0 Nat and the boys: 4 Nat and the boys remian undefeated

zoarian

Big props to the Boys for having Nat's back against Diligence

Nate 3000

Inigo Montoya: "You seem a decent fellow. I hate to kill you." Man in Black: "You seem a decent fellow. I hate to die."

Kaladin

What are Lytharri's odds against Christoph?

J W

I bet its just her nature to want things that involve her master. They belong to her as the head disciple.

dee's page of pages

Shes the old guild master of the primordial nights, she left cause she wanted to, getting closer to the end of her tutorial. Her powers are killing her somehow and "something something" her body is a weapon Yes

J W

Pretty sure he does it unconsciously. She is stated to be attractive and I think Nat really only respects strong women. So I guess Nat is actually a Saiyan.

Thien T

Kindness is Nyssa's handler. I think it's a common misconception bc of multiple instances where Lily was said to be the most talented healer ever since Kindness.

Kenneth Darlin

Nate needs to be careful. Kindness warned him. If he doesn’t watch out he will end up combining all his skills and get something bad like immortality

J W

So do you think dili was surprised when nat could still speak under his pressure? His demeanor changed after Nat began to speak and he calmed down a bit. Or do you think he pressured everyone else so he could vent his frustrations on nat and his anger just dissipated after saying his piece while also wasting their recovery time.

Primo

If you mean Myrra, probably not 0 anymore after she got trained by Liss and even more if she went through thought acceleration training

Nemesis

Immortality is only bad because she wants to die. Her warning is more in line with 'be careful what you wish for'

Matt

Let's all be real here. Morwag enjoyed being stepped on by Ruby.

iang

They allowed Christopher to basically cheat his way into a 100% legit reincarnation/resurrection. And Diligence wants, what, symphaphy cuz his life is hard and everyone's trying to cheat as much as possible as well? Fuck off.

Matt

Did you miss the part where she talks about her power? She can turn anything into a weapon.

Matt

"Control", Lisandras skill

Alex Reed

Friendly reminder that all crafted weapons provide some small experience when they are used. Nat made the black mana dagger for Lady Lissandra, and she's gonna use it for big things. Thus, big levels for nat?

Val the mysterious Jedi

He is the ruler of pettiness for a reason, I heard he sealed the 12 floor of beyond to build an ant hill playground

Sean

Oof, Nyssa just got the Nat special. Sees him, he says something, she immediately wants to punch his face.

Kenny

Oh shit, I hadn't even considered if his mana creations would count. Nat may be getting some levels here randomly

Boyo

This is a perfect opportunity to showcase Nat’s growth. Nysa has that dog in her, but the MC just trained for years with the GOAT

AFunkyLad

Diligence screaming incoherently*. Nat Standing in front of the burning remains of the beyond system* “ I request a 100 Active skill combination token”

B-Slam

She has the skill Weapon so she can turn anything into a weapon. She just also happens to use the skill on her body turning it in to a weapon.

granndfunk

Did that happen with the last black dagger he made?

granndfunk

Oh absolutely he was surprised. We just got an immediate display of the results of his resistance training

Alex

Loved today's chapter MIREC ?! Why are you cooking Nat x Ruby out of nowhere. Ruby yandere is so perfect. Thankfully im glad Myrra isnt gonna die and another proof this goatsandra priorized Myrra over herself. Ruby helps Liss is goat too. I deeply hope none of them will die in the future And now Nyssa~ finally :) and fuck dili this guy annoying as hell

Baramus

The impact Chris will have on the universe is far, far less than what Liss will do if she gets out. They’re not in the same ballpark at all, and at least what Chris is doing is allowed by the system. Liss is actively breaking set rules as she goes.

Ahppy

I hope the 6 active skill combination token is real.

Sean

To be fair, once they realized who he was they were probably annoyed. But the consequences of his exploit are pretty small scale. One planet has an early pairing and one participant goes through the tutorial and doesn't do much with it. Chris didn't really rock any boats during his time in the tutorial, he just grew stronger, did some politics, and went back to Earth with the assumption that he already won.

rams

Ruby x Nat has been a thing since the second floor

tyhuko

Pretty sure he killed two S ranks, one of them being Luan. So he did kill off 2 potential Absolutes.

Alex

Ikrikr thankfully but he was starting to cook myrra x nat so far He isnt beating the harem allegation.. coming back on ruby now Well myrra is my fav and ruby behind so i wont complain :)

Mister Cakers

Nats gonna pick up some fresh primordial blood for his increasing number of blood related materials

Mister Cakers

Mana for the mana god, blood also for the mana god

John

True, according to Dilligence, he was a considarable part of it - so he should get some XP of it. imagine getting just 5% of XP of those lv.600+ monster kills🥵

Marwolaeth

Nat × Soph enjoyers are lurking

j km

and implant themselves a deep memory on your path - "as a"? "a deep memory of themselves"?

NatXLily

not a chance ... hadwin remember

NatXLily

i think he did all that for a drop of blood to be used in event he became a problem later

NatXLily

By all my skills combined I HAVE ATTAINED THE ACTIVE SKILL MANA!!! if done in tutorial he can buy more skills and passives regain mana manipulation and focus and perception buy plenty of passives but having a peak top of line active like that would put him so far ahead its unreal

im Panda

"Diligence" killed one of Nate's friends, the one that Liss used to anchor her body

xlejdez.

But remember that Nat forgave him for it. And admitted that he is as responsible for his death because of the way they acted.

Gutz

Ragebait haha: "I haven't gotten used to all the changes yet. I don't want to kill you by mistake."

frozzi

Super bitch move from Kindness btw, wdym you just told your favorite mentally challenged demon pet the coordinates of other attendees just because she bored and looking for fight? Not cool at all

conkerer

No I think it's going to be something like "Making" and "Believing", and he will just going around being like no u

Nemesis

Oh yeah, Nat doesn't have any healing marks ATM! He said they were all ruined after the events with the dhampir

Nemesis

I think maybe she is suggesting they want to leave an impression on him 😉 maybe even an unforgettable first time?

Kevin

I don’t think they’ll ever be friends. They could end up working together at some point, far into the future, but diligence’s personality will always keep him from really allying with Nat.

Kevin

I don’t know if he’ll get any credit. When Lissandra steals and uses someone else’s mana, they don’t get any xp. Even if the person willingly gives them the mana they still don’t get xp. Is the dagger really a weapon item she’ll wield or is she just going to take the black mana and shape it into her own item?

Kevin

She also has primordial blood, which will progressively grow stronger without limit until it’s too powerful and kills her.

Kevin

Immortality is also bad because it took away all her healing skills when they combined. She can’t do like the one thing she liked doing. Should Nat combine all his skills there’s no guarantee he won’t lose some really nice things along the way, even if he becomes stronger overall.

Kevin

We have no idea how powerful Myrra is. I doubt she’s as strong as Nat is. Christoph is likely far stronger still. I don’t like all these people talking about Nat having a chance against Christoph right after the tutorial. Christoph was an absolute and a powerful one at that. He achieved beyond champion level power in 3 years which is a far faster pace than Nathaniel. He started another paring meaning he is confident he could kill an absolute at the time Nat’s tutorial ends. Nat isn’t matching an absolute at the end of his tutorial.

Kevin

Kindness might be hoping Nyssa loses. That would light a fire under Nyssa’s ass.

Unmasked

I am honestly surprised that N8 doesnt pull a Jason Asano on Diligence and just point blank angrily confronts him of how dumb and unreasonable he is acting. Were I N8 I'd likely scream at Dilli something like "Motherfucker, I'm fighting for my life and the survival of my planet. Can you effing blame me for trying to get every advantage I can? I'm just winging it here and its not like you set any damn rules for this tutorial" . Either he gets killed or he gets Dillis respect and most likely some rewards out of it which is exactly how N8 would behave...

Unmasked

Sadly, I dont think that would apply here because 1st it would just be too Op and 2nd I do believe that LisLis already used N8s first black dagger to kill the previous Envy. N8 should have exploaded in levels when that happened but he got zilch XP after the death of the previous Envy.

Unmasked

I do believe that N8's ben flirting with Ruby for quite some time...almost since the start of Beyond after he finds out her real identity...

Unmasked

I'm expecting something equally ridiculous like him receiving a skill called "Magic" that encompasses everything Magic and Mana related... I do believe he is slowly turning into the Equivalent of Doctor Manhattan but with Magic as his bread and butter that science.

Kirin

Thank you for the chappie!

Lance Beam

That’s why we love Sandra the cockroach.

wolf Bound

Truly no justice in the world 😪

wolf Bound

Diligence strikes again 😪 who can stop this mad ant.
