“Is that fragment that rare?” I ask the vyssari guy. I already feel his name slipping from my memory, so that’s how I will be calling him.

The vyssari guy continues to stand on the chair, looking at where the screen was while chewing on an aromatic wooden stick that sticks out from his mouth like a cigarette.

“I will ask for more information about it and send it to you, but I think there are only three to four dozen of that Fragment we know of, with no more of them appearing on freshly awakened planets,” he says.

“Why?”

“What do you mean why?” He turns to me and bites into the stick. I can almost imagine a too-tired-for-this-shit old cowboy persona for him.

“What do you mean why, why?” I mimic him. “I obviously mean why there are thousands, tens of thousands of some fragments, while Starless Sky has a few dozen only.”

“I don’t know,” the vyssari shrugs.

And for a moment, I think he pisses me off more than Melek ever did.

I get the assholes. I can understand someone messing with me, being gleeful, and wanting to make me hurt. In a way, I even consider it as not that bad of a strategy, one I would probably use if I hated someone enough or was a scared little shit and needed such tactics.

But the vyssari guy, showing not an ounce of curiosity, physically insults me. He is the sort of person I will never understand.

“What Nathaniel wanted to ask was what could be the cause of certain gods being shattered into very few fragments. Is it because they were powerful or because they were weak? Or maybe the way they were shattered influenced that?” Victoria, who catches my mood, asks instead of me.

And the vyssari guy spits out the stick onto the ground and slowly puts another one in his mouth, which he begins to chew. “I understand what he meant. But as I said, I do not know.”

“It is not useful, but thank you for being honest instead of-”

“No, Vic,” I interrupt her, “being honest is fine, but this psychopath didn’t even have an opinion on any of that. Not once in his life has he spent some of his mental capacity to give it a thought or be curious about it.” I turn to my right. “Selene, we want a new vyssari advice guy. This person is terrible.”

“Maybe after the second event, sweetie?” Selene smiles kindly. “And now, what color for your shirt do you prefer? Bright pink or pale yellow?”

“If you try to dress me in those colors, I will burn the clothes on me and walk into the event naked.”

One of the other two selari women chuckles and quickly covers her mouth as Selene turns to her.

Turning back to me, Selene says, “It is an interesting strategy to get the audience on your side, but don’t you think-”

She shuts up as someone knocks on the door. The knock is three quick ones, followed by one slow, and two additional quick ones.

Taking it as some sort of signal, Selene rushes over and exits the room, where I can hear a barrage of quiet whispers as they exchange a conversation.

When she comes back to the room, she sighs, “The Ruler of Greed’s vessels, Ignis and Yvaine, joined the Game as spectators. The Ruler of Diligence’s vessel, Bant, is joining the already present Oant. And the Ruler of Patience is rumored to be coming as well.”

Selene’s eyes are unfocused as she has a difficult time comprehending it all, and she just stares blankly at a random space in the air in front of her.

“And don’t forget that Lord Wrath might come too!” someone calls from behind the closed doors, causing everyone to turn there in surprise. “Can I come in?” the voice asks with a tone that sounds like the person is just having fun.

“Low pristine item as an entrance fee,” I call out before anyone else can answer, and I hear a laugh from behind the door.

“I offer information instead. Master told me you might appreciate it!”

Picking up on the hint, I look at Victoria, who just gestures that it is my decision, so I call, “Come in then.”

The door opens, and a feylith woman walks in, smiling brightly. She is wearing black, suit-like clothes, not dissimilar to the ones Ruby used to wear on the 2nd floor. Both her hair and eyes are a gentle yellow, and there are holes in the back of her clothes to allow her small wings to pass through.

“I’m Yvaine!” she says, her hair and eye color not changing at all. I even notice that her left eye is exactly the same as Ruby’s. And she seems to notice me noticing. “This is a mark from my master and my connection to her as her vessel,” she smiles as she explains.

I shrug, looking at Selene, who is in the corner, sitting on the couch with the two other selari women by her side, while the vyssari guy is down from the chair and also standing nearby. When Yvaine looks at him, he bows quickly, with his chewing stick nowhere to be seen.

“Is there any problem with the Game?” I ask.

And that feylith ignores her, instead coming closer to me, tilting her head to look at me with the eye Ruby marked. She is smiling brightly, moving that eye up and down my body while smiling.

“I have to say that I’m not sure what she sees in you,” Yvaine says, and I notice the field she put around us and Victoria, cutting everyone else off so they can’t hear. “I mean, it’s not like you aren’t interesting, but I’ve met my fair share of suicidal talents who became strong quickly, but barely lived long enough to become a threat to the truly powerful. Even if you two are a little bit similar, I find attendee Nyssa Volare to have more potential.”

“I’m happy for you,” I answer.

She laughs happily and pokes my cheek. “Maybe she likes your personality. I myself quite like how well you endure my presence. Tell me, is it not scaring you? I’m releasing quite a bit of it at you.”

“It is impressive, possibly good enough to scare children or Easy Difficulty attendees.”

“Is it now?” she asks, and her presence rises up even further, not affecting the area but creating that suffocating feeling very close to me.

But even with all that I’m dealing with, how can it compare to hers?

“An Absolute?” I ask.

“An Absolute with the highest compatibility with Master Ruby out of all her vessels. Through my body, she can channel more of her power than through anyone else!”

“So not the strongest, but the best leech, which makes you, in the case that Ruby shares her powers with you, the strongest of her vessels?”

She nods. “I like how you simplified it, but you will never be popular with girls if you say out loud what they just hinted at. And you,” Yvaine turns to my sister, “I was told you are in charge currently, and the more reasonable one. Master doesn’t know too much about this situation, but something is about to go down here, so Ignis and I are here to keep an eye out just in case.”

“I suspect it is not to keep an eye on my brother or me, but something much more serious. You mentioned Lord Wrath might come. Did you mean the Ruler of Wrath?”

"There is no one else in this universe I would ever call Lord Wrath other than that velnar man. If he actually shows up here, you know everything is beyond saving. You only deploy him when you've already accepted total destruction. I mean, Master Ruby can get angry, sure, but Lord Wrath? Once he's riled up, he doesn't stop fighting until there is nothing left to destroy."

"So when do they send the Ruler of Wrath in?" I ask curiously.

Yvaine thinks for a bit. "I think the last three times he went out were when there was a situation connected to one of the Last Elf’s Prime Replicas, one of the remaining gods, and another Lycan that challenged him. Oh, maybe that one fight against the Hornless Demon, but that one was a while ago."

"Not when Ruler of Pride messes stuff up?"

Ruby’s vessel bursts into laughter. "When Pride moves, there is nothing you can do but wait and pray you survive the consequences."

As she speaks, I notice an interesting fact. The same as plenty of people I have talked with previously, she calls him Pride. Not the Ruler of Pride, Lord Pride, or anything. Just Pride.

“Back to what I mentioned previously. I assume the situation must be serious since they dared to use the imitation of Lissandra Hawthorne as a diversion. There is probably not much you two can do once it gets to that scale, so just do your best to survive. Moreover, I shouldn’t even be here, but I got curious! So see you later, Victoria, Nathaniel!”

Standing up with a smile, Yvaine begins to walk away, not even bothering to open the door, but passing through it as if it isn’t even there.

The second game is about to start, almost a day later, once all of the preparations are finally done. The delay is mainly because of the interviews and other responsibilities toward the show organizers, things like making posters and us signing further contracts that would give us a split from merchandise sales and similar stuff.

I almost want to let Vic deal with it, but she simply doesn't care. As much as I love my sister, she is almost completely missing that loot goblin side. Overall, she finds it difficult to care about certain things.

Sure, she logically knows there is an advantage to getting a better deal and acquiring more resources, but at the same time, she considers it a minor detail. Hell, maybe she just considers it a distraction.

As for me, I don't want to deal with it either, so I reject all of the deals for now, deciding to wait longer. It's the sort of game where you wait and see which side blinks first, or which side twists the wheel so the cars heading at each other don't crash.

For now, both me and Vic are wearing similar clothes from Selene, though mine consist of a pale gray shirt and black pants, while she wears gray pants and a black shirt. The design is made in a way that pulls more attention toward my pale left arm and shows off my scars a bit more. I think they also avoided ironing mine on purpose, meanwhile Victoria's clothes are in a perfect state.

On the screen, Melek once again blabbers his usual stuff, walking through what seem like luxurious tribunes that open up to a view of a huge area with many screens. Plenty of rich-looking people sit there in comfy chairs that I bet are worth more than some epic items. Maybe arcane items, too? Who knows.

"And here we have our new, esteemed spectators! The vessels to the legendary Ruler of Greed herself! Yes, that Ruler of Greed! The one who battled an ancient dragon to a complete standstill! She, who faced one of the mightiest remaining gods, the Timeless Void, and walked away victorious! Just having her vessels present is a massive honor, and who knows, she might be watching through their very eyes! A warm welcome to Mister Ignis and Miss Yvaine, who requested to be introduced simply as her disciples and vessels!"

The camera pans out toward the two figures, the female feylith and a mora man towering over her. He is tall and slim, with red skin and gray tattoos. Ignis also gives a smile, though his feels much less friendly than Yvaine's.

"I would also like to introduce Mister Bant, vessel of the great Ruler of Diligence! The master of Domus and its universe-famous World Smithy! Mister Bant will be joining Mister Oant to spectate the game!" Once again, the camera spins and zooms in on two of Diligence's vessels, a human woman and a thylarin man who wave at the screen.

As if stealing the camera for himself, the view gets entirely filled with Melek's brightly smiling face before he pulls back, chuckling. "And as many times before, a thank you to the Ruler of Envy for already spectating. We are glad to have you here, our esteemed Lord!"

Envy appears on the camera, sitting higher than the others, with a few servants nearby. That asshole of a lumoran waves lazily and smiles, letting a servant put some sort of fruit into his mouth before he bites into it.

Melek cuts in quickly the moment the view returns to him. "There might be another distinguished guest joining us later, but I'd hate to spread false rumors, so I will share the news only once they arrive! But! I worry I have taken up too much of your time already. Once again, a massive thank you to all our new spectators. I'm absolutely certain I haven't forgotten anyone important!"

For the briefest moment, the camera sweeps across the audience, passing over Adrian sitting there in a VIP lounge not that far off from the others Melek just introduced, but that's it. It passes right by, and Melek doesn't even bother to mention him.

The selari face of the Game is smiling in a way that tells me this omission is obviously on purpose.

"Now then, it is time for the second game: Glass House!"

Kirin

Thank you for the chappie!

KDBA

>"Now then, it is time for the second game: Glass House!" Ah, a stone-throwing competition.

Lizy Flore

It’s a shit show. Quite literally.

Isaac Lung

It sounds completely crazy but…are they on Xyphos?

Alex

Liss aura farming once again, today's chappy is lovely. Thnaks cerim!

ChildConsumerServices

i wonder where Liss is going to exit the tutorial from? from what's been said it sounds like it'll be soon and i doubt it'll be Earth... Wherever it is i get the feeling that the... meeting between her and Wrath won't end politely

ChildConsumerServices

Considering Nats body is a glass house this competition seems perfectly suited to him!

Budgie

The suspense aaaaaa

Andrew

Thank you!

Alex

and the fraud is being even more of a loser chapter after chapter, deserved

Shyx

“Is there any problem with the Game?” I ask. And that feylith ignores her, instead coming closer to me, tilting her head to look at me with the eye Ruby marked. She is smiling brightly, moving that eye up and down my body while smiling. Maybe I'm missing something but that paragraph feels a bit strange. Who is being ignored?

Mint

Lizzy won’t stand for being a mere distraction, and I won’t be surprised if she has figured that out. My theory is that sneakythaniel will help teleport her to this tournament when everything goes to shit. We didn’t see much convo between Nat and Lizzy during the training, and I think it’s because sneakythaniel has the memories. Then she will proceed to show up in a fight between many rulers and vessels, probably kill envy and cause mayhem. Of course, Nat doesn’t do anything for free and will ask for a method to improve or fix his constructs, while looting the corporation during the chaos. I am sure he has already got his eye on a few items.

Terri Harris

Lots of work setting the stage, can't wait to see how it all goes to pieces. I love how after his training in accelerated time with Liss that the Greed vessel couldn't make him flinch with her presence. Unfortunately I sense that Greed vessels days are numbered possibly in minutes. Fully expect the presence of Gods, or Fragments of gods, Vessels, Absolutes by the dozen, a Dragon, Fae, Last Elf and Renegade imitations to reap havoc on the fragile glass houses. Or maybe just Nat letting loose to get a real feel for his new strength, and his being surprised by how weak all the Vessels turn out to be.

Al

What makes you think that? If true that would be interesting given what we know is going on…

Connor

What do the mora look like again?

Isaac Lung

We know that the rulers are currently focused on Lissandra, so it wouldn’t really make much sense for them to be interested in some random event as there are probably thousands of such games happening across the universe, unless it happened to be on the same planet that she’s trying to reach through beyond. The planet they’re on is also described as a desert, which is the same with Xyphos. Of course that doesn’t really prove anything but it’s a fun thought.

Fdrugc

Why does Nat have a problem with people not being interested in certain stuff? For example Nat doesn't care about fashion but that doesn’t make Nat hate himself.

Crow Says Caw

My question is: we know there used to be hundreds of rulers during the original system wars, so were they all rulers of different subclasses? Does that mean Nat could potentially become a ruler of a different subclass if he respecced? Or has the system become locked in to only 14 rulers Thanks for the chapter!

Konrad Pagacz

what gave you the impression that there are more than 14 rules concurrently?

Crow Says Caw

I think because that’s what we have been led to believe in the story is it not?

WINTEX

"And that feylith ignores her..." Ignores who?

Daniel Francis

He has a problem with people not being curious and not thinking or asking about the big questions.

Matthew Hay

Yes, seems like it's either: - missing an action by someone - it was his sister that should've asked the question (which I think is too brazen for her) - it should be him she's ignoring since she doesn't immediately answer that question.

Bandit General

They are tall, long legs, long arm. And that’s all I really remember

DeadbearKill

Pride!!! More Pride lore! More gods who still live lore! Let’s gooooo!!!

Adrian Rake

I would love to see that kind of development 😍👍

Matthew Hay

I picture a tall skinny Voldemort w/ his demi-snake face but not sure if that's me misremembering the descriptions.

Matthew Hay

Are you perhaps interpreting the notion of hundreds/thousands rulers through time as being concurrent? I thought the # rulers was always fixed.

Adrian Rake

They are battle junkies.

Yozora

The woman who bowed, look at the paragraph before nat broke the narration, that ingrate can't let narrathaniel work in piece

Adrian Rake

I was thinking why Melek is acting in this way. And I came up with a nice idea:- because he is a new vessel of Envy. 😎

Gutz

I gotta say: Sometimes I miss the first floor with its wolf level 2, when things were cruel and simple :D.

thisisniall

I think it's entirely possible that during the System War, there were more than the current number of Rulers simultaneously: " One hundred Rulers came to be, and many humans joined their side. " - Lissandra talking about the System War The system has changed, and adapted over time. The current 14 Ruler system might be 'post system war', or part of that adaptation. Lissandra talks about quests in the system war offering extra passive skill slots, other such rewards that will never be seen again. We've also previously heard mention of 'former Rulers', so it wouldn't shock me if the current Ruler-subclass system is a late or post system war invention.

thisisniall

Calling my shot: Pride has [Pride] at level 99.

Crow Says Caw

Yeah @Matthew I thought it was always fixed too but when I read about the hundreds in the system war it made me think perhaps it’s evolved to this state? @thisisniall yeah actually that makes sense if the system cycled through rulers and now it’s in a peacetime state or something

xlejdez.

I think really tall like 8 foot, thin like slenderman, long limbs, grey skin covered in red tattoos which are unique for every Mora. The three crafters from Crimson Forge are ones for example or the Absolute Candidate that Nat fought on 11th floor.

cerim

I imagine mora as Avatars from movie Avatar. just red skin and gray tattoos. So twice as tall as average human - or close to it and some other smaller differences from movie avatars

BaguaBrady

Is Nat still in the middle of two trait upgrades?

Alex

I spent 5 minutes to get "Izzy" was just Liss. I do like ur idea but she was too present lately + she needs to get her heart first (meaning meeting Kim in the labyrinth) so i wonder. The moment she's out the tutorial will probably break or something too. Too much stuff around her will happen. Nat will probably break down and find ways to fuck things up by himself anyways

Val the mysterious Jedi

Disagree,if anything lizz will probably not show up for some time, but I think wrath and envy will kill greed and the armoury destroyers vessels

Nemesis

It's looking like maybe it will be directly to the labyrinth

Nemesis

I would assume not, as i am pretty sure stage 2 blood was suggested to be winding down after only a few hours, so I would expect the others to be similar. I think it was only the body upgrade that was super long. Maybe the Physique upgrade is still ongoing, since its an evolution, not a stage up? But I think the blood would be finished.

Nemesis

I find it interesting that they use Wrath as a tactical nuke. Why is Wrath ok with this? Because as a ruler sanctioned action it prevents the system from getting pissed at him for letting loose?

BaguaBrady

He's in a body upgrade though, caused by the blood one. I figured that was a major part of the "you should be dead" comment from the host. Good to know I didn't miss a clear indicator either way tho.

Hms

Can’t wait to see what Pride and Liss Liss are cooking.

Apollo

Lowk think there will be a huge fight between liss and wraith in the future.

J W

I love that he didnt take offense at the ignorance just the lack of curiosity.

facetiousk

Contextually, it would make more sense if either: 1. Selene asked the question, while cowering in the corner. OR 2. 'The vyssari guy' who bowed to her. Otherwise, yeah, it feels like a section is missing.

Gardor

"You only deploy him when you've already accepted total destruction." ->who's "deploying" him? Man's one of the top existences in the universe, he should only have equals not superiors, and he's still got a boss. What a chump. And...the boss of Wrath definitely isnt Envy, right? Cuz Envy has only been a ruler for a couple months and has already publicly fucked up. Rulers exist on astronomical timescales. I dont think its on the (frankly, ridiculous) timescale of Primal Hunter, where Villy is 100 billion years old, but a Ruler still probably wouldnt take their marching orders from someone who's only been a peer for so little time, right?

Bandit General

That’s interesting take Val the…. Because Greed is like the 3rd strongest. So as for Envy to kill greed vessel. He might as well fight pride. He’s weak. And dilli is not someone to mess with he has 26 champions under in his hive. With trillions of more ants- dilli is not someone to mess with.

Gardor

How's he a fraud again? He DID become the absolute on his planet, he DID set records during his first playthrough of the tutorial, he DID trick the system into letting him get a new game plus, and he DID win this tournament. Those are all noteworthy achievements. Because he's not really from Earth? I dunno if he ever really claimed to be, tbh. Also, sounds like some kind of bigotry to hate him because of his origins. Pretty sure Nat calls him Fraudrian cuz he's jealous, with a dash of "wow that guy did amazing stuff" insecurity. Im not sure what he's done to make people hate him, besides being stronger than the MC. He's mostly seemed...polite? Like everything we've seen we've seen from Nat's POV, and even then the guy hasnt really DONE anything bad. He said "im the strongest so im in charge", which has been Nat's thing the whole time. This came out a lot more pro-adrian than i thought it would.

Tyler Engelke

Adrian couldn't make it to ruler status and had to restart from scratch to try and get more advantages the second time around. Nat calls him a fraud because he will probably never be a ruler.

Matthew Hay

You're forgetting Whitey's plot thread. He was killed by Adrian in a betrayal because Adrian was jealous. That is most of the antagonistic motivation. He also doesn't trust him to care about Earth as anything other than a stepping stone. The fraud claims are purely from him smurfing being natty when he's really on NG+. In the perspective of the universe it's nothing new. He can use his skill for intermittent reincarnation and presumably pseudo-immortality. Kindness literally has immortality. The rulers may feel more threatened if he reincarnates another thousand times to keep improving his starts, but this just makes him like any of these other abnormalities like the Last Elf.

Nemesis

Victoria's thoughts during the listing of Greed's achievements: Good. If Greed keeps going like that then one day she may be worthy of my brother.

Nemesis

I'm starting to suspect that Pride is a real wastrel. Like, the only reason people give him any respect at all is because he is strong. Otherwise he is just a uncaring monster. Like maybe he just shows up, grabs your daughter 'cause she has an interesting trait, turns her into an experiment and then just leaves the broken shell or the dead body when he is done. Takes what he wants, and just crushes anyone who tries to get in his way.

Gardor

I absolutely did forget about og Adrian betraying Whitey, that doesnt really line up with my whole "give the benevolent dictator a chance guys" pitch.

Alex

Yeah i gotta agree im a shitty person shitting on the fraud this way, qhat you're saying is completely right. But i do sent something not made by myself in the patreon chat discussion to support what i was saying, if u could check real quick. I still agree with u tho

Caramellato

"I would also like to introduce Mister Bant, vessel of the great Ruler of Diligence! The master of Domus and its universe-famous World Smithy! Mister Bant will be joining Mister Oant to spectate the game!" Once again, the camera spins and zooms in on two of Diligence's vessels, a human woman and a thylarin man who wave at the screen. Both are introduced as ‘mister’ Yet one is a female human? 🙃
