The DORIAN Mode Feels MYSTERIOUS (among other things)

The Dorian Mode is the most versatile of the 7 major modes, but 'versatile' doesn't seem like a very click-bait-y word to put in the title. From mysterious to heroic to funky the Dorian mode sees a lot of play in a wide variety of musical contexts, and in this video I explore how the different ways of handling the characteristic raised 6th note contribute to each of these various effects. 0:00 - What's the Dorian Mode? 0:39 - Midna's Lament - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess 2:00 - Dirtmouth Theme - Hollow Knight 2:58 - Cyan's Theme - Final Fantasy VI 4:17 - Battle Theme 1 - Chrono Trigger 5:05 - Olberic's Theme - Octopath Traveller 6:33 - Never Forget - Halo 3 8:25 - Dark World Theme - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 10:26 - Halo Theme - Halo 11:30 - The Dorian Mode is FUNKY 13:11 - Stage 4 - Kirby's Block Ball 13:49 - Song of Storms - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 14:33 - Outro PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/8bitmusictheory Check out my album: https://8bitmt.bandcamp.com/album/lets-play DISCORD: https://discord.gg/8bmt TWITTER: https://twitter.com/8bitMusicTheory Check out my video editor's own channel here: https://www.youtube.com/gamescorefanfare #Dorian #gamemusic #8bitMusicTheory

Only thing I really wish was in this video was an analysis of the case where the natural 6 is in the bass. I'm curious what you think the effect of that is. Nice job with the video though! I especially liked the first two examples where the natural 6 just hangs there, it's a nice effect. Looks like you've made almost all the modes of the major scale videos you can now though :P except Ionian & Aeolian (do those count? I think a video on just the natural minor scale could be a cool one.)

Good catch with the Song of Storms; that could definitely relate to the Dorian mode.

I love Midna’s Lament, was thrilled to see it make an appearance.

I am going to try and do Ionian and Aeolian videos, wish me luck lol. I think if you leaned on the 6th in the bass, it would have more of a locrian sound - ie Dm with a B in the bass would sound more like you're going for a B locrian thing than a D dorian thing. There probably is a way to make it sound Dorian if you're careful about it though

Yeah, well I mean as more of a temporary thing used in the context of the Dorian mode. Like (in Dm) a B diminished chord or G major chord first inversion.

Do you think you'd do the Ionian or Aeolian video first? For the Ionian mode I think one important thing to touch on is how to avoid that cheesy advertising music feel. Like some common mode mixture techniques to offset its blandness, for example. For Aeolian, I suppose what sets it apart is the presence of both the flat 6 and the natural 2, but I do love to hear composers mixing Aeolian and Dorian.
