This Remembrance Sunday, Time Team joins people across the nation in remembering and honouring all those who have served , and those who continue to serve, in times of conflict.

As we pause to reflect on the bravery, sacrifice, and resilience of generations past, we are reminded of the powerful stories that lie beneath our feet , traces of lives lived, battles fought, and communities forever changed. Archaeology offers us a tangible connection to that history, helping us understand not only how people lived, but also how they endured and rebuilt in the face of loss.

In tribute to this day of remembrance, we are re-releasing our classic episode Shooters Hill, a landscape long associated with defence and vigilance, overlooking London through centuries of military history. It stands as a fitting reminder of the human experiences that shape our shared past.

We hope you enjoy this episode.

Lest we forget, we remember their courage, and the heavy cost of the freedom.

Still a great episode. Who knew, that there was a secret bunker in a garden!😉☺️

This is great. My grandparents lived on Shooters Hill, and I went to the Grammar School there. Living in Eltham I often walked through the woods to and from School (this was 70 years ago) and there was more of the WW2 material visible then. There was also a further Resistance hide a few doors down the road from my grandparents, built under a neighbours garage. Thanks T.T!

So what has happened with the hidden bunker in the rockery? Was it investigated further?

Having served in the military (Vietnam war) The last bit about shoot to the last man and last bullet got to me. It really brings home the desperation of those days or of being on a small air base in the Mekong Delta during the Tet Offensive in 1968, I understand the “this could be the end” feeling.

Brilliant episode and great remberance too that WWII was deadly serious with preparations to slow down invading Nazi forces.

Did anyone ever follow up on the bronze age finds?

My father grew up at the foot of Shooters Hill on the Welling side on Bellegrove Road, right before it changed names to Shooters Hill. The field in front of them and the houses right behind them were bombed during the war. I've even found RAF before and after aerial photos of the area showing the bombed houses to confirm the stories my father told us. Their house survived almost unscathed . However, years after the war, my father remembered someone knocked on the door to do some kind of repair as part of the war recovery effort. My grandmother lived in that house from 1931, when it was built, until her death in 2001. Every time we visited, we'd go for walks into Oxleas Wood.
