Purbeck Marble Stone Grave Slab
Reconstruction of Finds
Thousands of finds have already been uncovered during the excavations at Cerne. However, during the filming, there were a few that stood out for reconstruction. The first was a letter ‘M’ which was found in the church trench by Ryan Cutillo where several floors had been smashed up. The ‘M’ was already broken into 2 pieces lying in separate areas. It is believed that the ‘M’ would have formed part of an inscription on a grave slab within the church floor. The choice of wording was researched by Medieval stone expert, Brian Gittos, Historian Dr Helen Gittos’ Father.
The Purbeck marble stone slab was also discovered in the deeper layers within the church trench. It had been snapped in two and left behind by the nineteenth century stone robbers. The design was very worn, but there was enough for Graphic Artist Robert Molyneaux to go on and recreate the rest of the cross. Other examples have been discovered on the Mortar Wreck, a project which Time Team will be following in a film release very soon.
The lead stylus was recovered from the spoil heap by metal detectorist Trenton Oliver. It is pointy at one end for writing on wax tablets, with the other end flat to wipe out mistakes. The stylus was completely bent in half and thrown away. Robert Molyneaux was able to unbend the stylus as a 3D graphic and reveal how it would have looked in use.
Special thanks to Robert Molyneaux for creating these models.
